From Coyotes beat reporter Craig Morgan
I wouldn't take that either.
Seems like an hf offer.
Thank f*** that didn’t go through for Van.
Didn’t understand why Vancouver was in on OEL anyway. Don’t they have Hughes and Edler as their top two LD? Why do they need OEL?
No kidding, in light of the Schmidt trade
Makes sense why Arizona declined. If they swapped the one of the picks for Podkolzin or Hoglander, I’d have done it as a Coyotes fan. Sounds like Bill Armstrong was on that same page.
Would've helped with the cap a little right?
Too much in a flat cap imo. I’d prefer Schmidt for a third even though I think OEL is slightly better. But OEL’s contract is a big concern going forward. The price to dump contracts is too high right now and Sutter while overpaid is still a useful player.
No Loui included would have been a killer here. Thank god we avoided that bullet and got Schmidt for dirt cheap instead.
Dumping Sutter is easily worth a 2nd. So the offer was Virtanen and a 1st for OEL. Weigh that against just a 3rd for Schmidt, and Vancouver did pretty well. At the same time, it’s not nearly good enough value to justify Arizona making that trade. So both sides are probably better off.
No wonder OEL is still a coyote
Agreed. They also have Jack Rathbone & Olli Juolevi whom are probably top-3 or top-5 in the Canucks prospect pool (depending where Nils Hoglander/Mike DiPietro slot).
Would have been terrible for Van
Yeah. It definitely worked out much better for Van. But at the time you couldn’t have predicted that Schmidt would be practically given away by Vegas.
Thank you for saying no Arizona
Thanks Bill for saying no!
Would have bee terrible for Arizona.
Vancouver got a steal with Schmidt, good on them for that but that doesn’t make this a good deal for Arizona to deal their #1 defenseman for. Alex Pietrangelo is not walking through the doors in Arizona. That package ain’t that hot to start with and you have to take on Sutters salary to make it work?
The Nucks seemed like a poor match for an OEL deal from the start. Credit them for being patient and ending up with Schmidt.
What a horrible offer.
So then they’d lose Virtanen and possibly still Toffoli? Good thing that was rejected. Better off with Virtanen and Schmidt than just OEL.
That actually seems pretty decent for Arizona considering Sutter’s contract is only one more year.
One of those deals where both teams are better without the deal going through honestly.
Not a bad offer at all considering OEL has 8.25 left for 7 years and that he would only accepted a trade to TWO teams. There's 0 leverage.
