Trade value of a defenseman or a forward is much higher as a prospect than a goaltender.
Even better. At the start of the 2019-20 season, Clang was expected to be, at best, a seventh-round draft pick. However, after a strong season where he has proven that he has true NHL potential, this outlook has improved.
As of now, Clang appears to be a fifth-rounder but he could easily be selected in the fourth or slide into the sixth-round. It really depends if/when a run on goaltenders happens. If top names go off the board early in the third round, it wouldn’t be unexpected for him to go late in the third, either.
Blomqvist, I can see, but this wasn't BPA. This was a reach.
... but how does that help our defense?
By trading a prospect for a rental or a young player with term?
Like, these picks just don't make sense for the state our franchise is in.
We’re starting a major rebuild, like it or not. We’re not winning another cup in the Crosby/Malkin era. At least not with them leading the team. We got 3 cups out of them leading our team, now starts the dark era. We need stability right now, this is what it looks like.
If that is management's vision of this team. Why are we trading 1st round picks and prospects and not selling off our players?
Stability isn't drafting two goalies with your first two picks of a draft with a guy who just turned 25 and had an all-star season already in your net. We’re starting a major rebuild, like it or not. Especially when your prospect pool is pretty universally regarded as one of, if not the worst in the NHL.
This has been a stupid, nonsense draft thus far. I say that as someone who stopped giving a shit about it after we traded the 15th for Kapanen. Drafting two goalies with a 25yr old guy already starting on your NHL club is asinine.

Explain to me the rationale behind drafting two goalies with Jarry already in your net, all the while being absolutely barren in the way of forwards and blueliners beyond Poulin and Legare (and I guess POJ, who is probably at best a bottom pairing, Ruhwedel-caliber guy right now).Your username makes sense.
We sign all our good young players undrafted from college anyway lately.

To those unhappy- who would have been your alternate selections and why are they better?
