I'm not super upset with the loss of Petersen. However, I do think the CBA should be revised to stop this situation from happening. I don't think it's fair to the teams, as CHL and USHL players don't have this option.
Maybe something along the lines of:
- At 3 year point, NCAA player chooses to remain in college or sign. No option to become a free agent.
- At 4 year point, the team offers a SPC or releases rights. If team offers a SPC and the player does not sign the SPC, NCAA player cannot play in NHL until three seasons have passed. NCAA player may sign SPC with original team at any time during those three years. ELC only goes to the three year point (eg: if the player goes to the KHL or SHL for two years, they sign a one-year SPC).
This aligns NCAA with the 7 years of team control.
This keeps Vesey with Nashville and Petersen with Buffalo.
