A bit of a late bloomer, Petersen committed to Notre Dame at the start of this past season after helping lead Waterloo as one of the better teams in the USHL. He plays a butterfly style but is more aggressive than a traditional butterfly goalie. He’s very athletic and has good size at 6-foot-2, 180 pounds, taking up much of the net. He still has one more year left in the USHL before heading to Notre Dame in 2014.

Petersen is a tall, slender goaltender who possesses good footwork, strong focus through traffic and shows the ability to make desperation saves. He will have time to physically mature and develop his form at the college level next season.
|
Petersen dropped much lower than I expected, but this could be a very nice pick long-term for the Sabres. Cal is an NCAA commit to Notre Dame and performed well in the USA Top-Prospects Game in Buffalo. He has good size, good footwork, and battles hard in the crease. He posted a 2.97 GAA in 35 games for Waterloo.

2012-13: Petersen split the goaltending for Waterloo with fellow 2013 NHL Draft hopeful Eamon McAdam, giving the Black Hawks one of the USHL's top goaltending tandems. In 35 games he was 21-11-1 with 3 shutouts and had a 2.97 goals against and .906 save percentage. Petersen played in four of five playoff games and was 2-2 with a 4.26 goals against and .881 save percentage. In October 2012 he committed to playing college hockey at Notre Dame in 2014-15. Petersen was ranked fourth amongst North American goaltenders in Central Scouting's final rankings prior to the 2013 NHL Draft.

Petersen is a massive goaltender for the Waterloo Blackhawks. He is very effective at eliminating the bottom half of the net and is great at using his long legs to shutdown backdoor scoring chances. He shows good lateral movement and is rarely beat with a deke in tight. Cal does go down into the butterfly quick at times and needs to work at standing tall to take away the top half of the net as well. He is good at going from the butterfly to the standing position quickly and hugs the post tight stopping most wraparound situations. He is good at getting out of his net to stop pucks being dumped in from wrapping around for his defenseman and shows the ability to move pucks up the ice when given time and space. Petersen does need to work on improving his rebound control but is generally good at making the first save.
|
It's easy to think how young American goalies idolize Ryan Miller, and Petersen is no different. A scrappy battler, Peterson played for his hometown Blackhawks in 2012-13, amassing a respectable 21-11-1 record, 2.97 GAA and .906 save%. The grinding competitor is a rare southpaw, giving him an ability to confuse shooters when he squares up with his right-handed catching glove. Off to the University of Notre Dame in 2014, Petersen will have plenty of developmental time to dial-in his aggressiveness while rounding out his technique.
|
A competitive goalie who relies on his size and raw natural athleticism .. generates an explosive lateral push - supported by quick feet and strong overall footwork .. strives to make himself bigger in the net and utilize all of his expansive frame .. defers to his instincts and reacts to the game in an improvisational way .. conjures spectacular and timely saves .. must work on his overall structure and consistency .. will over-play situations, especially when losing track of the puck .. breaks down and starts flopping and scrambling in recovery when he loses the middle of the net .. can be more economical as well - has some excessive movements that zap energy needlessly .. steadily learning to control and manage rebounds - though can get quite erratic still .. confident puckmover - comes out to play pucks - and shows a good attacking eye as he is able to make long, accurate stretch passes.

Calvin Petersen is a good butterfly goalie who plays an aggressive, athletic style and takes up a lot of net. He plays calm and does a good job controlling his rebounds. Calvin has a sense of calmness whenever he’s in the net.

4. Calvin Peterson, Waterloo, USHL

Calvin Peterson is young and raw, but possesses a lot of intriguing traits.

He'll be heading to the University of Notre Dame, where the 6'1", 175-pound goaltender will get plenty of experience in a good program.

Peterson has some good quickness and decent athleticism. He has a dynamic element to him and can come up with the spectacular save.

Still, his 3.01 goals-against-average in the USHL is concerning. Peterson needs to play with better positioning.

But he does have talent and Jensen thinks he could be a relatively early pick (via NHL.com):

"Petersen has phenomenal quickness, good size (6-1.25, 175) and offers good low net coverage. His wingspan is great, so he covers a lot of the net and is capable of coming up with big games. I like his battle level, and he competes hard. It wouldn't surprise me if he were chosen in the second or third round of this draft."

If Peterson can find a balance between flashiness and technical skill, then he could be something special. But he has work to do, and won't be NHL-ready for at least a few years.

McKeens, #95:

Backstopped his hometown Black Hawks to 21 wins last season to rank ninth among league goalies - and land a berth on the USHL All-Rookie Team .. the Waterloo, Iowa native split duties with fellow draft-eligible Eamon McAdam - ending the regular season with six consecutive wins .. stumbled in the playoffs however, losing in the opening round (2-2, 4.26, .881) .. will attend the University of Notre Dame .. SCOUTING REPORT .. a competitive goalie who relies on his size and raw natural athleticism .. generates an explosive lateral push - supported by quick feet and strong overall footwork .. strives to make himself bigger in the net and utilize all of his expansive frame .. defers to his instincts and reacts to the game in an improvisational way .. conjures spectacular and timely saves .. must work on his overall structure and consistency .. will over-play situations, especially when losing track of the puck .. breaks down and starts flopping and scrambling in recovery when he loses the middle of the net .. can be more economical as well - has some excessive movements that zap energy needlessly .. steadily learning to control and manage rebounds - though can get quite erratic still .. confident puckmover - comes out to play pucks - and shows a good attacking eye as he is able to make long, accurate stretch passes.

Waterloo Native to Buffalo After USHL, College:
Cal Petersen had to go a long way to eventually play for the junior hockey team in his hometown, but his dedication has put him on a path to continue beyond Waterloo to South Bend, Indiana, and perhaps Buffalo, New York.

Petersen was selected by the Sabres in the fifth round of the NHL Draft with the 129th overall pick. He follows fellow Waterloo goaltenders Eamon McAdam and Stephon Williams on Sunday after only four other Black Hawks goalies had been chosen previously in franchise history. The St. Louis Blues selected defenseman Mark Lanigan in 1984, the only other Waterloo native to ever be drafted by a National Hockey League club.

Before joining the Waterloo Black Hawks on a fulltime basis this season, Petersen spent two winters playing midget hockey in Chicago. That investment put the 6-1, 175-pound netminder in position to share the Hawks’ crease this season, and his play led to a commitment with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. In 2012/13, Petersen won 21 games, just the eighth time during Waterloo’s junior era that a goalie has earned 20 or more victories in one regular season. With a 2.97 goals-against average and 90.6% save percentage, he was named to the United States Hockey League’s All-Rookie Team and placed fourth among North American goalies in NHL Central Scouting’s Pre-Draft Rankings.

“From a very young age, Cal has been willing to sacrifice in order to improve his natural talent,” said Waterloo Head Coach P.K. O’Handley. “Being drafted is a step in the process, and still a ways from stepping onto the ice in the NHL, but Cal’s dedication makes it easy to believe that the best of his hockey career is still ahead of him.”

The Black Hawks anticipate that Petersen will remain in Waterloo during the 2013/14 season.

There are capsules on some of our picks in the following post-draft article on American draftees: http://unitedstatesofhockey.com/201...t-a-look-at-the-top-american-prospects-taken/ (link credit: LegomyLeggio)

129. Calvin Petersen — Buffalo Sabres: I always like seeing kids from the non-traditional markets no one talks about get drafted. Petersen is a native of Waterloo, Iowa, played for the local Black Hawks in the USHL and is headed to Notre Dame. I think he has a lot of talent and should get some quality net time at ND over his career there. There is just over 3,000 registered hockey players in Iowa, so it’s tough for a kid to make that leap to become an NHL prospect.

Kris had a quote the other day that this kid is supremely competitive -- even hates to be scored on in practice. Fiery.

Petersen became the second Waterloo native to be picked in the NHL Draft. In 1984, the St. Louis Blues chose defenseman Mark Lanigan.

Petersen, a Notre Dame recruit, is expected to return to the Black Hawks for the 2013-14 season. His first year in the USHL was good enough to earn him a spot on the All-Rookie team. He won 21 games and posted a 2.97 goals against average.

“What a great day for Waterloo and Waterloo hockey,” said O’Handley. “(Petersen) is a product of modern-day Waterloo hockey — Junior Hawks, a little bit of time with the Warriors. That’s a pretty cool thing.”

Kris with an excellent interview with Petersen up today:

Petersen prepared for journey

"I completely idolized (Ryan) Miller," Petersen told Sabres Prospects this week. "Like a lot of NHL goaltenders, I watch and try to take a couple of things from them stylistically. Miller has definitely been one of the top three growing up. I try to take a couple of pieces of his game and put it into mine. It's pretty cool thinking that in 1999 the Buffalo Sabres also drafted a pretty dang good goaltender in the fifth round."

"Obviously it was a really unique situation, but I looked at it as an opportunity to be pushed by another highly touted goaltender," said Petersen. "I needed to bring a high level of performance every day to a practice or a game. There wasn't any room for mediocre play."

Having a quality counterpart naturally kept Petersen's compete level high, but the experience also served as a sample of what lays ahead as he carves out his path to success.

"It gave me an early peak into how it'd be in the pros playing with another good goaltender right behind you and not having that luxury of taking a couple of games off or a couple of practices off," said Petersen. "It was an everyday thing and I had to elevate my game for a longer period of time than I had been used to."

Other quotes -- go read it. Great sounding kid.

Spoke with some South Bend folks today and there are VERY lofty expectations for Petersen this year. Maybe too lofty, but they have a ton of confidence in this kid. I hope he doesn't disappoint.
