I guess it's too bad that Mathews has outscored Eichel at every level to disprove that argument.

Bob McKenzie said after the lottery that while some scouts may have taken Matthews second last season, the consensus of who he spoke to was that he would have gone third after Eichel.

Perhaps there are scouts who evaluate players on more than just their points? :dunno:

If you include their draft seasons though, many scouts may have changed their minds. While Matthews just missed the last draft due to his age, what people forget is that Eichel just missed the 2014 draft by a month and a half. So last year we were comparing a year younger Matthews to Eichel.

He said this after this year's draft lottery. He wasn't talking about last season.

Well yeah if he was a few days older he would've been the youngest player in the draft... Almost a year less developed than Eichel.

Doesn't change the fact that he's out scored Eichel at every level and is noticeably better defensively.

I don't think you understand what McKenzie meant. He was talking on the basis of Matthews this year compared to the draft players last year. He wasn't talking on the basis of Matthews U18 compared to the draft players last year. Essentially, he was saying that the consensus of the scouts he'd spoken to was that Eichel was the better prospect.

I'm sure there are others who think Matthews is better.

Incidentally, Bracco also outscored Eichel at U17, U18, at U17 world challenge and IIHF U18. Do you think he is better offensively than Eichel is?

who cares who thinks who is better???? im happy we got matthews and im sure buffalo is happy about eichel..scouts have been wrong many times and they will continue to be wrong in the future! reading endless posts comparing the 2 is pointless. we can revisit who is better in 20 years when we actually have evidence:shakehead

Some sanity for once, I totally agree. Good job Buffalo getting Eichel, he's gonna be a beast. So is Matthews, but playing a slightly different game, not as explosive but more cerebral.

Who's better? Who cares? They're both gonna be great in their own ways

How so? According to reputable scouts like Seidel and informed insiders like Mckenzie Matthews would have gone #3 in the 2015 draft. Though Mckenzie did say more likely.Your post does not disprove this.

They are clearly in the same tier, most sources agree with this statement, from scouts polled to the guy who coached both of them. Eichel may have a slight edge according to some scouts, but its not overwhelming.

Some prefer Eichel, others Matthews. That being said, the only thing Eichel has is opinion on his side. All the numbers point to Matthews and from my viewings at the same age, Matthews was better (U18s and U20s).

In the end whichever is better, both are pretty darn skilled players. Kind of an insane potential draft year if Matthews had been born at the right time for last year's draft. McDavid, Matthews/Eichel is a pretty crazy top 3 no matter how you decide the 2/3 part of it. This year is pretty darn good, but last year would have been insane when you toss in Strome and Marner to round out the top 5.

Is fun watching Matthew's goals this season. The guy really can shoot and has some great control of the puck. Definitely an elite talent there.

Honestly who cares which one is better. Eichel is a phenomenal talent and so is Matthews.

McKenzie has been saying all season long that they're pretty much on the same level. Let's not forget this from 3-4 months ago:

I recall Bob Mckenzie saying on TSN Drive some scouts had Matthews at #2 over Eichel in 2015.

Mcdavid is a generational talent. Put him in any draft and that draft becomes special. Matthews and Eichel would likely be #1 in most other drafts. 2 big skilled Centers do not grow on trees and they are a desired commodity in the NHL.

Given Matthews is almost a year younger than Eichel. I don't think it is unreasonable to think he may have gone #2 last draft.

And Craig Button recently came on TSN radio and said it's a coin flip between Matthews and Eichel.

This... plus what scouts think of them before the NHL, or what their stats were at U18 have little relevance to how their NHL careers will be.

Buffalo didn't have a choice to get Matthews, but is surely thrilled with Eichel.

Toronto didn't have a choice to get Eichel, but it is probable they will select Matthews, and will probably be thrilled with that.

Both are top talents, and will be a great rivalry for years to come in the NHL, and teammates for the US Nationals.

Hmm, I wonder what happened during that 4 month time to make him change his tune :badidea:

Said this elsewhere, these 2 plus Barkov is making the Atlantic more like the Pacific. 3 teams built around big centers. And who knows, maybe some other team in the division will pull in Nolan Patrick.
