Proposal: Bottom line guys do we believe Krug is a #1D?

Assuming Krug is a #1D should we go all-in to sign him?

I'm a little confused because the thread title and poll are asking two different questions. Is he a #1 Dman, and assuming he is should the Wings go all in.

No, Krug is not a #1. He absolutely would be on this team though.

He is a good defenseman who would make the Wings better. Specifically he is a puck moving defenseman, which this team desperately needs. It's hard to tell what our young forwards can really do because half the time the D couldn't get the puck out of their own end. Part of that is on the coaching staff for not having a good system for exits, but mainly a lack of talent to get the puck out.

He's going to be expensive to come to the Wings because the only advantages they have is the hometown angle and giving him a lot of money and term.

So you don't sign good players unless you have the perfect players already in place?

Given Krug's age compared to Rafalski, we'd have 5 years to add a partner for Krug for the analogy to come full circle.
I think if you add Krug to the current roster, he will be significantly in over his head for at least the first season, possibly longer.

That doesn't necessarily forbid the signing. Or preclude finding additional help in the near future. But it is a factor of who you're going after, what you're expecting of him, and being realistic of the outcome.

Without more help, I think Krug doesn't have an opportunity to put his skills to best use in Detroit, which leads to being unhappy with the results of shelling out 5-7 years at $7M or more per season.

And 32 is old. How many players are still playing at 32 the way they played at 29?
4 out of the 10 players who played 27 games in this playoffs were older than 32 (in fact 34+).

Will he age well over the next 7 years is a perfectly reasonable question and you have to ask it for every 7-year deal you ever sign. It's never a given. I can't answer that and neither can you. I'm not even saying that he, specifically, is worth the risk. I just don't think it's unreasonable to consider.

On this team he is absolutely the runaway #1, but realistically he is a #2 who would be awesomely paired with a Pietrangelo type on top pair.

I'll take the kind of defense Dekeyser played in his last reasonably health season over Krug.
We have Hronek for the PP. Maybe Cholowski too.
No need for a powerplay specialist.

Did you see our powerplay last year?

DeKeyser will never be healthy again. He may surprise with a 60 game season one more time, but all the other years will be 40 games or so.

Yeah. How much better do you think Hronek's PP numbers would be if he was the only blueliner on the first unit of the Bruin's PP, with their staff and with Bergeron, Kreijci, Pasta and Marchand?

Krug would walk on this team and be the best passer of the puck we have. How much better would our goal scorers be for it? You are asking the wrong questions.

Not much. Krug is overrated.
If he was half as good as you think he is, Boston wouldn't have hesitated at meeting his demand.

That's like saying Hossa is bad because we let him walk... it's called a salary cap.

Were people this against signing Rafalski?
I honestly don’t recall Rafalski getting any sort of sheltered minutes, or having a partner covering for him - in fact I believe he was a solid 2-way Dman while he was in NJ.

I was ecstatic when he was signed - knowing he’d make a great addition.

How tuned in was everyone to the 2006 Devils, eh? Things have sure changed regarding coverage and how we view things.

They signed a 34-year-old Rafalski to 12% of their salary cap.

You tell me a 34-year-old today folks would want to sign to a 5 year deal at $9.78 million per year.

Maybe cuz the Wings suck I’m a lot more cynical than I was back then...

Funny how that is?

He is a top pairing d-man and one of the 10 best offensive d-man in the league. He would have helped us a lot, wish him well in St. Louis. Glad to at least get him out of division and conference. The PP1 guys in St. Louis should be over the moon this morning.

His game isn't without some issues. But I think some that are against this signing are pretending he is a lot less effective player than he really is, guy is a terrific hockey player and would have brought a ton of leadership to our room. I would have done 7 X 7, wish we had.

Krug at St. Louis is good for hin. Obviously he still preferred to be in winning team. And STL winning window is longer than Bruins'.

I think this case is closed.

***

Red Wings current need is skill on the right side.

LD DeKeyser - RD Hronek
LD Nemeth
--- RD xxx ? <------------ Seider after a season in Sweden?
LD MStaal ---- RD xxx ? <------------ Lindström after a season in Sweden?
LD Merrill -- RD Biega

Too much stay-at-home types, so some skill should be added.

- RD Vatanen ?
- RD Barrie ?

We missed a good opportunity with Brodie. Vatanen is oft-injured & Barrie probably costs more than Sami. On a short term deal, either is ok I guess, but both probably want term.

I read on the Calgary boards that the main reason Brodie left Calgary to go to TO was because his wife has MS, so they wanted to be closer to family, so If true, realistically I don’t think we had a chance at Brodie.

Calgary Flames defenceman T.J. Brodie’s fiancée is putting MS on ice

Wow, I'd forgotten that Rafalski was 34 when they signed him.

He did start his career late though. He played his first season at 26.
