Horvat is right and there's no way this should make you that mad Luc. These guys go to ****ing amazing cities and they're going to coop up in the hotel playing Fortnite? Play it as much as you want at home, fine, but on the road you should be spending time with the guys and bonding as a team. If that involves a nice sightseeing walk and a movie, great, if it's a pint at a local bar, that's great too it's not going to kill them. It's nothing against Fortnite or other video games, but it's really not something you need to take on the road or get bent out of shape about.

I don't think anyone here actually knows what its like being a professional athlete/millionaire flying to different cities with your teammates as part of your job, but in general a lot of this depends on the individuals personality type. The most accurate description of an extrovert vs an introvert is that one finds social interaction energizing while the other finds it draining. So being an introvert doesn't mean you dislike social interaction but more that you can only take so much of it and 'cooping up in a hotel room playing Fortnite' is how you unwind.

Now it's a problem if guys are staying up till 4:00am playing games on a game night, and it can be complicated enforcing that kind of curfew. Otherwise it feels like a kneejerk over reaction to the game that just happens to be popular at the moment... and as someone who doesn't play this kind of games I'm not really sure what makes it so different from League of Legends/Counter Strike/World of Warcraft/etc etc, all the addicting multiplayer games that have come before it. The focus on fortnite is starting to feel like one of those DnD/Satan-type media panics.

It gets even worse, I just heard the audio interview with Horvat.

He basically goes off on fortnite and games in general, saying they are a waste of time, he says this over and over.

What a f***ing ignorant human, having an opinion on not liking games is fine, but being so ignorant about them is another.

Not just as a gamer, but as a person with common sense, my opinion on Horvat just dropped significantly, Horvat might as well be 60 years old with his dinosaur mentality.

I have no clue why this aggravated me so much.

Just imagine a bunch of decades back people actually having conversations with the coach about Golden eye or starcraft or mario kart.

They would laugh you off the face of the earth, nobody would give a shit.

Sure with the internet and technology advancing, its much easier 2 get a group and play, but the amount of hours people played co-op in games like goldeneye were staggering, maybe just as much if not more than the current fads that are going on now.

Im fine with it. Save it for at home. You're on the road with the guys. Go build a bond with them.
Playing games with friends and teammates is literally what bonding is, Some people don't like the big club scenes, or going 2 restaurants, or casinos, some people wanna just stay at the hotel and f***ing put a game on and play, chill and relax.

People who think games in general don't let you bond are either 60 are have the mindset of an elder.

It reminds me of people when the COD craze happened and people said that playing first person shooters like COD would make you more violent, it's such bullshit.

Or videogames are for kids, I remember that line 100's of times growing up.

Such a dumb mindset.

Being someone who WAS introverted and preferred being to themselves, I hated being forced into social settings.

f*** I felt so bad for Dougie Hamilton. Trading a player because he doesn't go out for beers? WTF?

Like I don't have as much of an issue with banning video games while on the road but the reasoning that I've seen people use to justify it has really been awful to see.

Just look how god awful team bonding is going on right now by this stanley cup dynasty.

The owner of the god damn Canucks just bought an E-sports overwatch team, this entire situation is comical.

Spending your time playing an MMO is fine as long as you keep an appropriate balance between free time and work time. I don't expect them to be on the clock 24 hours a day. As for the topic title? If we are drafting top 5 again and pick up another high end C like Jack Hughes and EP emerges as a PPG+ C, where does Horvat fit in the franchise's plans two years from now? If that scenario goes down, I'd flip him for a D-man or a RW'er. I think it's just too early to give Bo the C when he could be bumped.

Pettersson can also play wing.

Under this scenario, you could just as easily have [2019 1st] and Pettersson playing on the first line, while Horvat anchors a second line. [2019 1st], Pettersson, Boeser, and Horvat would give us some good top 6 depth.

I don’t want to trade Horvat at all. Horvat should be our future captain in my opinion......with the aforementioned three wearing A’s one day.

Unfortunately, when you’re a part of a team, you have to give up some of your individual rights. It sucks, but that’s the nature of the beast. Most people are insecure and dumb by nature and so if you put your own individual private needs ahead of the team, it will serve as a detriment to team chemistry.

Unfortunately, in a team environment, Dougie Hamilton was at fault not building team comraderie off the ice (if that is truly what happened).

Being a “team player” off the ice doesn’t require one to completely give up their private time, but there is an unwritten expectation that players will do things together to increase team unity.

Who are "you" or in this case "MDZ/BO/Sutter" To tell me "lets say EP" that going out with them around cities, or restaurants, or clubs or casinos is a better way for "me" too spend my time on the road.

Every single person is different, they have different things about them that make them happy / sad / focused / relaxed, etc.

I honestly do not care if I get paid millions of dollars, do you think if a guy like crosby said NO i won't follow this stupid rule, that suddenly hes gonna be traded?. They would drop this rule so fast, it was like it was never brought up. This is only happening because a couple of old vets don't like the new way, on a terrible team and a young guy like horvat probably either wants to fit in, or has had a similar mindset growing up.

Some people like books
Some people like movies
some people like games

Nobody has the right to tell me what I need or want 2 do.

Can you just imagine a guy like Elias getting traded because he wants to play fortnite instead of hanging outside the hotel.

If we are not already, we would be the biggest laughing stock in NHL history.

So wrong in every way possible.

I don't even want to get into this past this post.

As long as you are not a cancer to your team, past your strict job performance in any field, you should not be discriminated against for your personality type.

Let people be who they want to be. This does not mean that they should avoid the media in all aspects, ignore the other members of the organization. Just do what is required in a professional setting and live your life the way you want as long as it doesn't negatively affect your individual ability to perform.

If other members are annoyed because an introvert doesn't jerk all the extroverts off and engage in small talk or go to team building events, then the organization is not run properly top to bottom.

Everything you said is correct.......in theory.

Unfortunately, being a part of a sports team is not theory.....it’s reality. The reality of most pro sports teams is that it’s full of dumb and insecure people that WILL discriminate against you if you are NOT social when it comes to team outings.

My guess is that you have never played team sports at the Collegiate or Professional level and so you haven’t been introduced to this mindset.

Like I said - in a perfect world, you should be able to do whatever it is that you want in your free time, but this isn’t a perfect world. On a sports team, if you skip team outings, your teammates will hold it against you (as what appears to be what happened with Dougie Hamilton in both Calgary and Boston).

Now - is the expectation that you have ZERO private time on a team? Of course not. There is always a time and place for that. However - when it comes to a team, if you skip formal and informal social outings where a mass majority of the team will be attending, you will be shunned.....and you will be perceived as a guy that either doesn’t like his teammates or doesn’t care about his teammates.

Superstars get treated differently and have more rope when it comes to these things. Is it fair? Of course not.

But again though - we don’t live in a perfect world, and sports teams is the LAST place where logic is applied in these cases.

Team hazing, athletes being cliquey and idiotic, etc., are real things unfortunately.

As an athlete, do you have to give up ALL of your private individual time? No. Do you have to give up some unfortunately? Yes......ya do. Why? Because - you are surrounded by dumb and insecure idiots who will NOT understand your need for privacy all of the time.

Except they made it clear, they banned ALL video games on the road.
It's not some or maybe have a curfew, it's literally banning it outright.

I stand by the decision. You have to remember that a lot of 19-25 year olds on that team are just like you and I were at that age. If there is ANYTHING that will potentially distract a young player from going to bed on time and staying disciplined with the correct habits......then yeah......video games on road trips should be banned.

This management group wants to create focused professionals that treat their crafts seriously on and off the ice. That includes having the right off ice habits such as going to bed on time, and not spending hours upon hours in front of a TV when you’re away from the ice.

I 100% support this decision.

Visual/Audio stimulation is a drug (just like cocaine or heroin), and it's being pushed on the masses like nothing before it; legally that is. You are uneducated and wrong in your assessment, not Bo.

I'm not telling you to stop playing video games, as I will not stop doing drugs, but please recognize that it runs much deeper than you have previously acknowledged - for your own good.

I don't think the issue is team bonding. No one should be forced to spend time with others (as you say).
However - if a professional athlete is not sleeping and eating enough/properly because of a video game (drug), that is where his employer (the hockey team) should step in and intervene.

That is what I suspect is happening. Horvat is just acting as a conduit.

This management team that mocked all of Gillis' methods back in 2014 continues to 180° on them.

“Yeah, I couldn’t go out for a beer after the game,” says Willie Mitchell, the Los Angeles Kings defenceman who was in Vancouver when they experimented with sleep science.
When I played the coaches knew which games are going to be tough, and you don't need a "sleep doctor" to tell you that, you pretty much figure it out. - Trevor Linden

I posted this earlier today on the main board:

The draft is in Vancouver this year. It would be cool for Horvat to come up to the podium to make the first (overall :sarcasm:) pick wearing his jersey with a "C" on it... or better yet have it hiding underneath a regular sweater or dress coat and expose it as as soon as he got on the stage. The place would go mental.

It would be the worlds best kept secret if they could pull that off without it leaking to the media.

Hot damn that would be awesome as hell.

Especially in Vancouver!!

I 100% support this.

Giving the C to Horvat next year might be a bit too early, but I still love this idea a lot.
