OTTAWA SENATORS VS CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS: REVENGE OF THE ZIBANEJAD
What are the odds that the two teams who participated in one of the biggest trades in modern NHL history would end up meeting in the Stanley Cup final as a result of that trade?
Senators fans were highly critical of GM Danielpalfredsson. With Mika Zibanejad on the tradeblock, there were dreams of the team getting a young high end defender, or maybe a package of high first round draft picks for 23 year old possible first line center.
Instead, Ottawa's GM went the route of a hockey trade. After last year's hopeful playoff run, he wanted a top 2 defender who could help Ottawa win the cup.
The Blackhawks came calling and dangled a player who might be the second best defender in the entire league behind Erik Karlsson, Duncan Keith.
There were other teams with trades on the table, some of these trades consisted of coveted young players. The problem Ottawa had, was the reason they were moving Zibanejad in the first place was they had too many of those types of players already and couldn't give them all adequate ice time to ensure they reached their potential.
Ottawa was stocked full of top 4 defenders, stocked full of second line forwards, the team needed a game changing top 2 defender, which is something no team EVER trades. The only way they were going to get that piece was by taking advantage of the fact that Chicago had Duncan Keith who at the age of 33 was on the final year of his deal, and would be asking for too much money for the Blackhawks to retain.
Senators fans initially hated the trade. It didn't help that Zibanejad began the year strong, putting up career numbers on the Blackhawks second line, and Ottawa fell to the basement early in the year. With the Blackhawks owning the Senators first round pick, the trade was primed to go down as one of the worst trades in hockey history.
With three quarters of the year remaining, despite a multitude of injuries to key players, the Senators rallied back into the playoffs, and clinched a wild card spot.
Zibanejad and Wiercioch both had career years for the Blackhawks. Zibanejad had 20 goals and 60 points in 78 games. Playing on the Blackhawks top pairing, Wiercioch had 59 points in 81 games, but was -10.
Ottawa made this trade with Chicago, because with Chicago being a Western team, the odds of them having to play in the playoffs would be slim to none.....but now with Chicago upsetting the defending two time Stanley Cup champion Minnesota Wild, GM Danielpalfredsson will have to stare the trade he made right in the face.
Can the Senators defeat the Blackhawks to win the franchise's first Stanley Cup? Or will Mika Zibanejad crush the dreams of everyone in Ottawa, and show the team that he was the one they should have kept?
