TRADE DEADLINE UPDATE
Senators Record 26-32-5
-Mid season, Senators claim Lawrence Pilut off of waivers from the Philadelphia Flyers. Pilut is a Swedish TWD who went undrafted. He is an RFA with two years remaining on a 1 way deal worth just over 1M per season. Pilut is an 81oa top 6 D with 3* potential. Andreas Englund who is waiver exempt was assigned to the Binghamton Senators to make room for Pilut. Pilot had 3 points and was a +2 in 13 games for the Flyers.
-The Bobby Ryan trade helps Carolina to a playoff position come trade deadline. In a weak Metero division, Carolina occupies the third divisional playoff spot.
-The Senators announce their intentions to sell off veteran talent at the deadline. They will attempt to re-tool through the draft over the next few seasons in order to rebuild a competitive playoff team. Methot, MacArthur, and Lehner all rumoured to be available to playoff teams looking for rentals.
-The Senators sit in the basement with the third worst record in the entire NHL. GM Danielpalfredsson announces that with the poor showing, there'll be some changes. Anybody who isn't a core piece with value will be moved at the deadline, and the Senators will attempt to re-tool.

NHL-Trade-Deadline.jpg

TRADE DEADLINE
Ottawa trade with Washington
-Robin Lehner 84oa (Starting goalie, 3 years left at 1.8M)
-Next Year's Second Round Pick
For
-Washington's First Round Pick Next Year

TRADE ANALYSIS
Washington know just how good Lehner can be in clutch situations considering he almost lifted Ottawa past them in last year's conference final. Lehner is signed to a very good three year 1.8M deal. He is making backup goalie money despite being a starting goalie.

Washington has less than 1M in cap space, and Holtby is a free agent next year. They'll be unable to retain him and already know he'll hit the market. Washington has 2015 10th overall pick Etienne Montpetit ready to jump to the NHL.

Lehner will either serve as a cheap transitional starter for the team while Montpetit attempts to grasp the NHL game, or he will serve as a formidable number 2 goalie to shelter the young star.

With Ottawa's re-tool, they might be a bottom 5-10 team next season. Washington plays in a weak division where they are almost always close to guaranteed a shot at the playoffs. If this trade works out as planned, Washington traded down 15-20 spots in the draft in order to acquire last years' Vezina winning goalie who has hit a rough patch on a bad Ottawa team. Lehner being signed for backup goalie money makes this trade a huge win for a cap strapped Capitals team.
______________________________

TRADE #2 WITH MINNESOTA
-Marc Methot 85oa top 4 LD
-Andreas Englund 23yo 79oa 4* LD
For
-Next year's first round pick
-Next year's 3rd round pick
-This year's 4th round pick
-Colby Robak 79oa depth D

TRADE ANALYSIS
Both the Colorado Avalanche and Minnesota Wild were bidding for the services of Marc Methot. The Senators were seeking a first round pick, but ultimately had to sweeten the pot.

Andreas Englund has hit a roadblock in his development, and isn't looking like the top 4 D that the Senators envisioned he might become when they selected him 40th overall in 2014. In Englund the Wild get a cheap bottom pairing NHL defender who still has some value as a prospect but is unlikely to meet his potential.

Methot was the main piece to the trade. With the former back to back cup champion Minnesota Wild fighting for a playoff berth, Methot is a welcome addition to their squad. The Wild should have enough cap space to re-sign the defender. He'll slot into their second pairing alongside OFD Jared Spurgeon.
______________________________

MACARTHUR REMAINS A SENATOR
Ottawa opted to retain veteran Clarke MacArthur. Offers weren't very strong, and with the Senators being unable to retain salary per Eugene Melynk's rules, MacArthur's 4.6M cap hit was too much for most teams to fit in.
______________________________

END OF SEASON: HERE AND THERE
-Ottawa goes on a streak at the end of the year and in typical Senators fashion play themselves out of getting a top 2 or 3 pick. They end up picking 6th with a 36-40-7 77 point record.
-With Bobby Ryan Carolina make it to the first round, but lose to Washington in 7 games.
-Washington make it all the way to the conference final for the third year in a row, but lose in 7 games to the Maple Leafs.
-Despite going in on Methot at the deadline, Minnesota fail to make the playoffs by a slim margin. They are expected to negotiate an extension with Methot prior to July 1st.
-Andrew Hammond once again proves that he is an elite playoff goalie and makes Ottawa regret not keeping and overpaying him......he takes an under powered Edmonton team to the conference final where they lose to Nashville 4 games to none.
-Mike Babcock fulfils his promise to Toronto, Toronto wins the Stanley Cup beating Nashville 4 games to 2.
-Erik Karlsson's 4 year Norris streak is ended when PK Subban wins the trophy for the second time in his career.
-For the second year in a row, a former Senators defender wins the Bill Masterton trophy when Marc Methot takes it home. Methot is a former Senator, but he did spend a majority of the year with Ottawa.

SENATORS DRAFT PREVIEW
There is a lot of pressure on GM Danielpalfredsson to turn not have a repeat of last year's disastrous season. It is to the point where owner Eugene Melnyk expects the Senators to make the playoffs next season.
Don't be surprised if the Senators move their 6th overall pick for a player in their mid 20's who can help now.

If they keep the pick, who they'll take is up in the air. The Senators need a left defender who can develop into a top pairing guy to play alongside Erik Karlsson, but they also need a pure scoring threat to replace the goals that have been missing since Bobby Ryan is no longer part of the team. Expect the Senators to take the best player available based on how the top 5 shakes up.

Senators scouts have their eye on Canadian OFD Shannon Froats. Froats might be around when the Senators draft 36th overall in the second round, but as a riser with a considerable amount of hype, the Senators might have to consider using their 16th overall pick on him, or at the very least, attempting to trade back into the early 20's. Froats is described as an NHL ready puck moving defender.
______________________________

NHL ENTRY DRAFT SUMMARY
6th Overall-Francois Beauchemin RW SNP 72oa 4G*
(Initial rumours were that Ottawa might take a defender in this position. With Beauchemin falling to 6th, Ottawa changed their plans. Beauchemin likely fell as a result of his size. He is seen as a small skilled sniper/playmaker in a similar prototype to a Patrick Kane or Mitch Marner, or more relevant to Ottawa a Mike Hoffman. With Bobby Ryan traded, and Daniel Sprong's NHL future still a toss up, Ottawa should benefit from getting a skilled right handed sniper with first line upside. While Sprong is a one dimensional sniper, Beauchemin has the ability to be a more complete offensive force. Beauchemin has tremendous upside, but is said to be a few years away. Don't expect him on the Senators squad any time soon, but Binghamton fans should be very excited about possibly seeing him on their team's top line next season.)

16th Overall-Shannon Froats ROFD 79oa 4.5R*
(Originally belonged to Carolina, acquired in the Bobby Ryan trade at the start of the season)
(Ottawa went off the board with Froats. Initially, Froats was expected to go mid to late in the second round, but come draft day, there was buzz about whether or not Froats who is seen as a riser in the draft would last past the first round. Ottawa opted to play it safe and take Froats with the 16th overall pick instead of hoping he'd remain on the table at 36. Froats is described as a bigger Erik Karlsson. His hockey sense is off the charts for a 20 year old, and he has some of the best skating in the draft. The only reason Froats wasn't a top 5 pick is because most scouts feel he is a boom or bust type of player who is ahead of most in his draft class but may not adapt to the NHL. He is both a safe and a risky pick because he is NHL ready off the bat, but he may have trouble progressing past being a bottom pairing power play specialist.

The big knock of Froats is that he has size, but it hasn't translated to a being strong on the puck or having a strong physical game. If Froats can improve his strength, he may end up being the steal of the draft. Expect him to play on Binghamton's top pairing right away. Ottawa has bottom pairing depth, but if injuries happen, Froats might see some NHL action this year.)

36th overall-Edwin Foligno LDFD 67oa 20yo 4R*
(Ottawa once again went off the board with Foligno. The hockey world isn't quite sure what compelled the Senators to go off the board, other than the fact that he was the best defender remaining in the draft and the Senators passed on the highly ranked defender Getzlaf in order to take Beauchemin 6th. The Foligno pick seems similar in nature to when Ottawa picked Andreas Englund at 40 in 2014.)

-Cody Ceci 85oa top 4 LD 8 year 5M LIMITED NTC
______________________________

OFF SEASON: HERE AND THERE
-For the first time in GM Danielpalfredsson's tenure, Ottawa has significant budget space that could be used on free agents.
-Colby Robak has been moved to the Islanders for a 7th round pick, Chris Wideman has been moved to Colorado for a 6th. Both players should see NHL time on those teams. Had they stayed in Ottawa, they would have been placed on waivers at the start of the season and if cleared, sent to the AHL.
-Former Senator Marc Methot has signed a 3 year 4.275M extension to stay with the team who acquired him at the trade deadline, Minnesota.
-31 year old Andrew Hammond has become a fan favourite in Edmonton. Trading a 2nd round pick for an upcoming UFA Hammond was a move directly linked with helping the Oilers return to the playoffs. Hammond has played more playoff games combined for the Oilers in the last two years than all previous Oilers goalies from 2006-2016. After a down post season in Ottawa that partially prompted his trade where he had a respectable .916 save percentage, Hammond has put up a .934 save percentage over 34 playoff games. Hammond has taken the Oilers to one third round elimination, and one cup final elimination. Will he help them win the cup this year?
-Expect the Senators to shop Daniel Sprong around for a draft pick. Sprong had a decent first NHL season last year putting up 11 goals and 17 points. With the Senators drafting Beauchamin 6th overall, Sprong is expendable. As stated before, the Senators see Sprong as a player who is either top 6 or bust. They don't see him as being capable enough to adjust to the NHL as a bottom 6 player. Sprong's reputation is polarizing among NHL executives, but there are at least a few teams out there who feel that Ottawa has a future 30 goal scorer in Sprong.
-The Senators have signed Andrei Semenov (80oa 2.5G* 24yo) to a pro contract. Semenov was Senators prospect Bjorn Graps D partner last year in Binghamton, and impressed Senators management with his play. Semenov was originally undrafted. Is the signing of Semenov an indication that the Senators might be thinking of moving a defender?
-Eugene Melnyk expects Ottawa to be a playoff team, and with both Ryan and Methot's salaries off the books, for the first time since Danielpalfredsson took over, the Senators have some budget space to make an impact in free agency.

BREAKING NEWS: SENATORS SIGN BRADEN HOLTBY AND TOREY KRUG
For the first time in his tenure, GM Danielpalfredsson has money to spend on free agents. Senators fans quickly learn that he isn't messing around.

Earlier today it broke that the Senators have acquired the top available defender in this year's free agent class. Torey Krug has signed a 2 year deal 12.6M deal with Ottawa, his AAV will be 6.3M per. Krug scored 20 goals and 60 points last year. He should give Ottawa a secondary scoring threat behind Karlsson that they haven't had since losing Duncan Keith. Krug's deal includes a limited NTC.

Early indications pointed to the Senators riding Nedeljkovic into the season, but with Eugene Melnyk furious about the Senators missing the playoffs in a season that saw the Toronto Maple Leafs win the Stanley Cup, GM Danielpalfredsson was forced to find a proven starter. The Senators scooped up the top goalie of the free agent class by offering Braden Holtby a 1 year 7M per deal. The expectation is that Holtby can come in and force a quick turnaround for a Senators team that still has a strong core.

OFF SEASON TRADES

TRADE WITH PITTSBURGH
-Daniel Sprong
-Ottawa's 2nd Next Year
-Lawrence Pilut (81oa 23yo top 6 D)
For
-Pittsburgh Penguins 1st Round Pick

The Penguins are a team who are very close to the cap, and might be looking to re-tool as soon as next year when Rwers Patrik Hornqvist and Beau Bennett could potentially be lost to free agency. Sprong with 11 even strength goals last year while playing all throughout Ottawa's line up has shown that he can score at an NHL level. With a thin prospect pool at RW, and the potential to lose both their top 6 right wingers nest year, the Penguins need someone who can play in the NHL beside Sidney Crosby sooner rather than later.

Due to cap issues, the Penguins were very thin at D prior to this trade. Earlier this week, the Senators signed Binghamton defender Andrei Semenov. It was speculated that the signing of Semenov was in anticipation of a trade as Ottawa already had 7 NHL defenders, those who speculated were right. Pilut was claimed by Ottawa last year off of waivers and played well in a minor capacity on their bottom pairing. The Swedish defender will be expected to anchor Pittsburgh's bottom pairing with Jordie Benn. More importantly, he is able to play on Pittsburgh's powerplay.

The likelihood of Pittsburgh missing the playoffs is slim to none. Sprong alone would likely go for a 2nd. The Senators have now stock piled a combined 4 first round picks for next years draft.

TRADE WITH MINNESOTA
-Nick Paul C TWF 23 yo 83oa 3.5*
-Korostolov RW SNP 23yo 4* (Former 2nd round pick)
-Minnesota 3rd
For
-Debincat C PLY 21yo 80oa 4* (Former 2nd round pick)
Senators fans were upset to wake up to the news that fan favourite prospect Nick Paul had been moved to Minnesota. With Cizikas, Lazar, and Pageau in their bottom 6, the Senators dealt from a position of strength.

The acquisition of Debincat is purely an AHL move. With Francois Beauchemin selected 6th OA, the Senators needed a high end playmaker to help him out on Binghamton's top line. With no one fitting that bill in their prospect pool, they had to look elsewhere to obtain one.

The Wild are thin at RW, and Korostolov isn't likely to get a chance to progress further in Ottawa not that they've drafted Beauchemin. Similar to Sprong, Korostolov is a 1-dimensional "top 6 or bust" type player.

FORWARD PREVIEW
This is the teams second year without Bobby Ryan. Lots of pressure will be put on Brett Ritchie, Mike Hoffman, and Matt Puempel to score goals. The forward line up looks mostly the same as last season with only small changes.

The 6th overall pick Francois Beauchemin to start on the first line in the AHL.

DEFENSE PREVIEW
The Senators defense has been given a major face lift this season. Most noteable, veteran defender Marc Methot is gone as he was traded to the Minnesota Wild at the last trade deadline.

The Senators have been a team that has been unable to snag big name free agents as a result of budget concerns. With multiple veterans traded after last year's failed season, the Senators had cap space to work with, and as a result were able to sign the best defender available, Torey Krug. Krug will give Ottawa something they've been lacking since Duncan Keith left, which is a secondary offensive threat behind Erik Karlsson.

15th overall pick Shannon Froats had an impressive training camp, but with Krug added via free agency, the decision was made to start Froats in Binghamton where he could get top line minutes alongside former 11th overall pick Bjorn Graps.

GOALIE PREVIEW
This was speculated to be a sink or swim year for Nedeljkovic. But with owner Eugene Melnyk yelling that he wanted the Senators in the playoffs....OR ELSE....GM Danielpalfredsson could not risk putting the season on Nedeljkovic's shoulders so the Senators went out and signed Braden Holtby to a one year deal to anchor their team.

-- Despite Trevor Daley being re-signed to a 2-year deal, his name is still popping up in trade rumours, and will likely continue to do so heading into next season's trade deadline. The reason the Stars may look to move Daley is to free up cap space with Jamie Benn, John Klingberg and Tyler Seguin all needing new deals within the next two summers. It will be an interesting situation to watch unfold.

TOP STORY - THE BEST PROSPECT SINCE NEW JERSEY DRAFTED SAM STEEL? JONATHAN TOEWS AND BOBBY CLARKE ALL WRAPPED INTO ONE? MEET THIS YEAR'S PROJECTED FIRST OVERALL PICK, C/RW OUT OF THE WHL, WES BRANDNER
This upcoming draft will have on of the most unique first overall picks in decades. Wes Brandner is a grinder who due to his offensive upside is being compared to Bobby Clarke.

Primarily a RW, Brandner can also fill in at centre. As a result of his elite two way play and exceptional leadership qualities, he has drawn comparison to Jonathan Toews.

At 5'11", Brandner isn't a huge player, but he plays an elite physical game and looks like he'd be ready to step into the NHL tomorrow.

Brandner isn't as flashy as the past "Next Ones" such as Crosby, McDavid, or Steel, but he is seen as a player that you win with. In today's NHL, he projects to be a first line 65 point elite physical two way force.

The Senators have four first round picks in the upcoming draft, but the likelihood of the Wild, Penguins, or Capitals finishing in the basement is very low. The best the Senators could hope for would be that Brandner gets scooped up by a Western Conference team so that they don't have to meet him 6 times a year, or in the playoffs.
______________________________

TRADE DEADLINE UPDATE
TEAM RECORD: 36-20-6
Ottawa is second in the Atlantic Division and have an 8 point lead on the final wild card team. The Senators don't feel a need to acquire a rental just for the sake of doing so if the right guy isn't out there, but with four first round picks in the upcoming draft, don't be surprised to see them move their own first round pick if they can get a great player to help them put together a strong playoff run.

marc_edouard_vlasic_tapped_in_san_jose_sharks.jpg

BREAKING NEWS: SENATORS ACQUIRES MARC EDWARD VLASIC
With the Sharks sitting at the bottom of the league, potential UFA defender Marc Edward Vlasic was placed on their trade block going into the deadline.

The Senators jumped on the opportunity to add a top level LDFD to compliment Karlsson. The Senators moved former first round pick Stan Habscheid, a RW SNP who was drafted 28th overall last season. They also included their current first round pick, and hulking 6'9” 4* 73oa 23yo DFD Jarrett Meyer.

Habscheid and the first round pick were the main pieces for San Jose. Meyer was considered a long shot with tremendous upside when Ottawa took him. He is on the wrong side of his development, but if he does find his play with a change of scenery in San Jose's system, they could end up with the best piece in the trade.

The Senators have yet to approach Vlasic to ask about a possible extension. With playoffs in the Senators sights, expect them to hold off until the draft to sort out whether or not Vlasic intends to test the market.
______________________________

MINOR TRADE DEADLINE MOVES
-With Meyers gone, the Senators sent a 7th round pick to the St.Louis Blues for 77oa 26yo RDFD Joel Edmundson. The trade looks to be a minor league rental to help Binghamton fill Meyers role in Binghamton as they attempt to make the playoffs in the AHL. Edmundson's contract is up at the end of the year, he is an AHL rental.

-Ottawa claims 25 year old minor leaguer Tim Bozon off of waivers from Montreal. Ottawa then sent Bozon from their NHL roster back through waivers, he cleared. This is expected to be a minor league move for Binghamton as Bozon had 50 points thus far in the AHL. As a LW PLY Bozon should find himself helping Binghamton's top line beside PLY Debrincat, and SNP Beauchemin.
______________________________

END OF SEASON
-TEAM RECORD: 50-24-7-107 points
-Ottawa finishes 4th in the entire league, and a single point away from the number 2 spot.
-Ottawa's record is even more impressive considering that the Atlantic Division has become the premier division in the entire league. 3 of the top 4 teams in the entire league are in the Atlantic Division, or 4 of the top 10 teams in the league.
-Ottawa owns the Capitals, Penguins, and Wilds draft picks. All three of those teams underperformed. The Penguins and Capitals just barely missed the playoffs. Barring lottery wins, those picks will be at 8 (Minnesota), 12 (Washington), and 14 (Pittsburgh). With the three picks, Ottawa has a combined 9.5% chance at winning the Wes Brandner lottery (6%, 2.5%, 1%).
-As of the NHL season finishing, Binghamton was 9th in the AHL, and a few points away from clinching a playoff spot.
-Puempel had a strong year with 25 goals (best on the team) and 55 points which was second among Senators forwards to Kyle Turris who had 66 points.
-Konecny had a disappointing year with only 44 points. The Senators were hoping to see Konecny improve on his 34 goal 68 point season he had two years ago as a 21 year old. The Bobby Ryan trade has clearly taken a toll on Konecny's numbers.
-Holtby was a top 10 goalie in the league with a .915 save percentage over 68 games.
-Ottawa has astounding firepower at D. Four of their players put up more than 40 points, including Karlsson who had a 76 point season. The other three were Krug 44, Ceci 42, and Vlasic 40. The Senators were a bit disappointed with Krug's numbers considering he put up 20 goals and 60 points for Boston the year prior to Ottawa signing him. There was an expectation that his production might fall as a result of Karlsson getting more minutes, but 44 points is too low for a player making what Krug is making.
-With 18 goals and 41 points in 73 games as of the NHL season ending, 16th overall pick Shannon "Canadian Karlsson" Froats put up top 10 AHL point production among defenders in his rookie year. Senators fans are getting very excited about the future of Shannon Froats.
-Debrincat and Beauchemin developed great chemistry. With 64 points, Debrincat was tied for 5th in AHL points.
-6th overall pick Francois Beachemin lead Binghamton with 28 goals. He was tied for 10th place in the entire AHL.
-Ottawa will face off against Montreal in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

GAME 1
-The game remains tied throughout the first. Bournival and Pacioretty both score in the second to give Montreal a 2-0 lead.
-After being stopped for 26 straight shots, the Senators beat Price with a Konecny goal in the middle of the third.
-With two minutes remaining, Subban scores on an empty netter to ice the game 3-1.
-Montreal leads the series 1-0.
______________________________

GAME 2
-Montreal scores two goals on their first three shots in the first. Karlsson steps up and gives Ottawa a quick goal to keep the game in reach.
-Puempel scores early in the third to tie the game.
-The game goes to double OT, on their 41st shot of the game, Montreal score a power play goal to win the game 3-2. Ottawa puts 31 shots on price.
-Montreal leads the series 2-0.
______________________________

GAME 3
-We enter a crucial game in a tight series. Not counting the empty netter, both games have been decided by a single goal. Montreal has a chance to take a 3-0 series lead.
-Scherbak scores on the first shot of the game for Montreal.
-MacArthur scores late in the first to tie the game for Ottawa.
-Gallagher scores in the 2nd to give Montreal a 2-1 lead that is snapped before the first when Mike Hoffman scores.
-Puempel and Bowman both score early in the first, the game is now tied 3-3.
-The game goes to OT, but all it takes is 40 seconds for Travis Konecny to score one of the biggest goals of his career. Ottawa beats Montreal 4-3. Shots were 34-36 in favour of Ottawa.
-Montreal leads the series 2-1.
______________________________

GAME 4
-Vlasic is injured, he won't be fully healthy until the 28th. He could possibly return earlier, but he won't be 100 percent for the rest of the series.
-Pageau scores early in the first to give Ottawa a 1-0 lead.
-Mike Richards, Eric Staal, and De La Rose score three straight goals in the second to take a 3-1 lead.
-Mark stone and Matt Puempel both come back with goals to tie the game 3-3 going into the third.
-The third straight game of the series goes to OT, but 2 minutes into overtime Eric Staal scores a shorthanded goal for Montreal to give them the 4-3 win.
-Montreal leads the series 3-1.
______________________________

GAME 5
-If Montreal is going to put Ottawa away, now is the time. Shortly after game 4, it was revealed that Karlsson had been injured, and will not be able to play game 5. “Canadian Karlsson” Shannon Froats was quickly flown from Binghamton to Montreal in preparations for game 5. Froats will play his first ever NHL game in dramatic fashion as Ottawa faces elimination. If he is ever going to live up to his nickname, now is the time to do it.
-Konecny scores on Ottawa's second shot of the game to give them a 1-0 lead that lasts until the end of the 1st when Emelin scores.
-A wild second period sees Ottawa score 3 goals to take a 4-2 lead against Montreal going into the third.
-With ten minutes remaining, Galyenchuk scores to bring the game to 4-3. With 50 seconds to go, Scherbak scores, the game is tied 4-4 and will go to OT.
-Another quick OT ending. Konecny wins the opening faceoff and sends the puck to Ceci who dishes it up to Ritchie. Ritchie then carries the puck up the ice and the big powerforward carries the puck down low where he battles with Beaulieu. Ritchie is able to hold the puck on the boards long enough for Konecny to come to his aid and dish a beautiful pass in front of the net to Mike Hoffman who is alone in the slot. A quicker wrister beats Carey Price over the blocker shoulder to give Ottawa the 5-4 OT win and keep them alive in the series without Karlsson or Vlasic.
-In Karlsson's absence, With Semenov leaving the game as a result of injury, and Ottawa only having 5D, Shannon Froats played 33 minutes in his first ever NHL game.
-Montreal leads the series 3-2.
______________________________

GAME 6
-Montreal missed their chance to strike while Ottawa was down, and now might regret it if they fail to win game 6. Vlasic has been medically cleared to play but is not 100 percent. He'll play on the second pairing with Shannon “Canadian Karlsson” Froats. Krug and Ceci take top pair duties. The Senators will be leaning on Ceci to step up and anchor their D.
-No goals until half way through the second when Montreal scores.
-With 7 minutes remaing in the third Ottawa gets a game tieing goal from an unlikely source....bottom pairing defender Colten Dixon.
-With the score 1-1 at the end of regulation, a second straight game will go to OT.
-Early in OT, Galyenchuk scores on a rebound from a Nyquist shot to eliminate the Ottawa Senators.
-Montreal win the series 4-2.
______________________________

END OF PLAYOFFS: HERE AND THERE
-Krug, Konecny, Turris, Karlsson, and Puempel were all PPG players during round 1.
-Holtby had a disappointing .908 save percentage but he gets a pass because Price only put up a .911. It was a run and gun high scoring series.
-Philadelphia Flyers beat Nashville to win the cup.
-Binghamton make it to the Calder Cup semi final but lose to Marian Gaborik and the Manchester Monarchs.
-PK Subban wins the Norris for a 2nd year in a row.
-This must be a practical joke that was programmed into the game.....another former big mean Senators defender wins the Bill Masterton for the THIRD year in a row. First it was Gryba, then Methot, now it is Marc Borowiecki.
-Rumour has it Ottawa has their sights on right OFD Brian Ladd in the entry draft. Ladd is projected to go in the middle of the first round. Expect them to either use the Washington or Pittsburgh pick on Ladd.
-Pageau to test the market, Vlasic, MacArthur, and Holtby open to extensions. With only 12 million in budget space, the Senators may not be able to sign all three players. The Senators would like MacArthur to retire as a Senators, but if the veteran LWer wants one final big payday, the Senators may have to pass on re-signing him.

BREAKING NEWS: Penguins win the draft lottery.....sort of.
In a complete game changer, the Senators have won the draft lottery with the 14th overall pick which they acquired in the Daniel Sprong trade with Pittsburgh at the start of the season.

The Penguins were confident that they were a playoff team when they moved the pick in the pre-season. They were right, as they only missed by a small margin and finished as the top non-playoff team.

Senators fans are in absolute shock, the pick only had a 1 in 100 chance of winning the lotto......

The Senators have not drafted first overall in over 20 years. The highest picks the Senators have had during GM Danielpalfredsson's tenure were last year's 6th overall, and the 2015 6th overall which they traded up to get.

Wes Brandner could be a game changer for the Senators who have failed to get over the hump since winning a Stanley Cup a few years ago.

Penguins fans are understandably mourning the lottery win. Both Crosby and Malkin are only a few years away from retiring, and the Penguins ultimately traded away a pick that could have gotten them the "next one" for Crosby to pass the torch to.

NHL ENTRY DRAFT
1st overall (Originally the 14th overall pick which belonged to the Penguins)-Wes Brandner RW GRN 79oa 5* 19yo (CHL)
Wes Brandner is a two way force. He is NHL ready and has been compared to Bobby Clarke. He is a grinder at heart but has tremendous offensive upside. He'll never be a 100 point player in the league like the past "Next Ones" but is expected to peak as a 60-70 point first liner with unreal possession play. Expect a perennial Selke candidate who strikes fear down those who face him on the ice but can also score the big game winning goal. Senators fans should be on cloud 9 with this pick.

8th overall (Originally belonged to the Minnesota Wild)-Rich Tokarski RDFD 63oa 4* 18yo (CHL)
A safe pick whose floor is a strong bottom pairing shutdown player. Senators went with the best prospect available with this pick. Tokarski could compliment last year's 16th OA pick LOFD Shannon Froats.

13th overall (Originally belonged to Washginton-Brian Ladd ROFD 78oa 4.5R* 18yo (CHL)
There has been a lot of talk about Shannon Froats, but if Brian Ladd finds his game, he has come at the right place and right time. In a few years, the Senators will be looking for a puck moving quarterback to replace a retiring Erik Karlsson. Ladd compares to Brian Campbell. Ladd is a boom/bust pick for the Senators who with three first round picks could afford to take a risk. Don't expect him in the NHL right off the bat.

B Holtby 88oa 30yo 6.66Mx1 year (Limited NTC)

FREE AGENCY: HERE AND THERE
-MacArthur had requested close to 3 million dollars for a one year deal. With MacArthur looking for one last payday, and the Senators on a tight budget, as much as they would have liked to, they could not have accommodated him on a deal.
-Ottawa negotiated a one year 6.66 million dollar deal with Holtby. Going year to year is risky for the Senators as Holtby is a UFA and could choose to test the market if he pleases next season. The Senators are hoping to see some progress from Nedeljkovic that would allow them to consider not extending Holtby next season.
-Bottom pairing NHL defender Colten Dixon has been sent to Anaheim for a 3rd round pick. Could this be a move to make room for Bjorn Graps in the NHL?

BREAKING NEWS: MIKE HOFFMAN TRADED TO NJ
-Earlier today, the Senators quietly requested Hoffman's 10 team trade list. Hoffman has a limited NTC stemming from the 8 year deal he signed with Ottawa in 2016.
-The ten teams Hoffman listed were CHI, ANA, TOR, CAR, FLR, NJ, WPG, NSH, STL, PIT.
-Hoffman was sent to NJ with Anaheim's 3rd round pick in exchange for NJ's upcoming 1st round pick. With former first overall playmaker Sam Steel as their number 1 center, NJ sees Hoffman as a welcome addition at wing. Sam Steel, drafted a few years back to a barren NJ team has yet to live up to his expectations as the best player drafted since McDavid. NJ has been aggressively shopping for a younger veteran winger to help Steel. With this trade, they got a consistent 20+ goal scorer at a bargain.

Senators fans are very upset with this trade. Hoffman was a fan favourite, was on an affordable contract, and the Senators got a very minimal return. The odds of a first round pick turning into a player as good as Hoffman are very low.

"Hoffman is a great player, and we think he is going to reach new heights in NJ with Sam Steel. To any fans disappointed about Hoffman leaving, I get it, but all I have to say is...stay tuned."-GM Danielpalfredsson earlier in the day when interviewed on TSN 1200.
______________________________

OTTAWA SENATORS SIGN TAYLOR HALL
We now know the meaning of "stay tuned".

The Senators have signed coveted free agent Taylor Hall to a 38 million dollar contract. Hall will make 9.5M a year over the next four seasons. This makes Hall the highest paid player in Senators history. As a consistent 40 goal PPG player, Hall could be a game changer for the Senators who have struggled to score goals since moving Bobby Ryan to Carolina.

With the announcement of Mike Hoffman being moved to NJ, it has become clear that the move was necessary to not only make room on the roster for Taylor Hall, but also to clear salary. The Senators are a budget team who has to spend 10 percent below the salary cap.
______________________________

KEVIN GRAVEL SENT TO ARIZONA
Shortly after it was revealed that Hall was an Ottawa Senator, news broke that Kevin Gravel had been shipped to Arziona for a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th round pick.

Gravel, a solid top 4 stay at home D is a steal for Arizona at that cost. The 28 year old defender has four years left on a 4.5M deal.

After acquiring Hall, despite having three million worth of cap space, the Senators had to shed salary to meet their budget requirements. With Shannon Froats and Bjorn Graps likely graduating from Binghamton to the NHL on cheap ELC contracts, the choice was an easy one for the Senators to make.

The Senators dealt from a position of weakness as they could only accept picks or prospects, and could not take back salary. They also had to find a team who needed a top 4 LDFD, and had the cap space to take on Gravel.

Coyotes fans should be very excited about this trade.

PUEMPEL TRADED TWICE IN A DAY? LEAGUE INVESTIGATING
Eugene Melnyk was furious to learn that the team was 2 million over budget going into the preseason.

GM Danielpalfredsson was in a tough spot. Both Krug and Holtby would be off the books the next season, giving Ottawa a plethora of budget space, but he needed to find a way to get two million off the books before the Season started.

The team had already sold low on two roster players Mike Hoffman and Kevin Gravel, and couldn't conceivably find two million in budget space without losing a third key player.

GM Danielpalfredsson decided that Matt Puempel being traded was the solution....Puempel was sent to the Dallas Stars for the Stars first round draft pick. Upon the trade leaking to the media, Senators fans were furious.

yashinfan12 said:
Melnyk is ruining this team by being cheap, now we don't have a second liner

habsrock4lyf said:
So you trade a Conn Smyth winner for a draft pick, GG Ottawa, too bad you wont make the playoffs this year we would love to beat you again also PK Subban is better thankarlsson

wesbrandner4captain said:
i dunno guys maybe beuachemin is ready to play or something he is better than puempel and pumpel was overpaid anyways at 4m. karlsson is old too and froats is rdy he could be moved.

In a perplexing move, minutes later, the NHL was informed that the Dallas Stars were trading Puempel back to the Senators in exchange for their pick they gave up for him, both of Ottawa's first round picks over the next two seasons, and Arizona's 2nd and 3rd picks Ottawa gave up in the Gravel trade.

The reason for the trade back? Dallas would retain half of Puempel's 3.9M salary.

Ottawa had to pay a very steep price, but the result is that they now have Puempel signed at 1.95M per over the next 5 seasons. The Senators essentially sold four draft picks for 10 million dollars.

The NHL initially investigated the trade. It doesn't look like the league will step in and veto this controversial trade. Had the Senators been a cap team, the trade may have been vetoed, but given that the Senators still have a bit over 10 percent of the salary cap left, and this was purely a budget move, the league has okayed it.

1ST OVERALL PICK WES BRANDER ASSIGNED TO THE CHL
GM Danielpalfredsson has taken Senators fans on a roller coaster ride of emotion this off season. Fans excited to see 1st overall pick 19 year old Wes Brandner play in the NHL will have to wait another season.

"He could step into the NHL tomorrow and play. We don't want to waste Wes in a checking role, we have a grander vision of the type of player he can be. We want him going somewhere where he can continue to play first line offensive minutes and develop that side of his game."-GM Danielpalfredsson explaining the move at a Senators press conference.

"Sure, as a budget team with a full top 6, keeping his ELC contract in tact was a concern. Burning a year off for him to play in the bottom six would be foolish especially when we feel that a year in the CHL can do a lot more to prepare him for his future role as a first liner here than a year playing on our bottom 6 would."-GM Danielpalfredsson on whether budget played a role in Wes Brander being kept in the CHL.
______________________________

OFF SEASON HERE AND THERE PART 2
-Senators sign a few depth players to cheap two way deals to hold them off a year until multiple contracts expire and they can fix their bottom 6.
-All of last year's first round picks are assigned to the CHL. It is speculated the Senators primary concern is maintaining their UFA age and ELC deals as they don't feel there are any open spots where they'd improve the roster right away.
-Ritchie, Holtby, and Krug are all open to extensions next year, but odds are, Ottawa cannot keep all three with their budget. Ritchie in particular is only making 2 million on his current deal and will command a sizable raise.
-Ottawa official gives up on former goalie of the future Ty Edmonds. Edmonds still could potentially develop into an NHL starter, but it is a long shot. Edmonds was drafted 45th by Ottawa back in 2016. Edmonds was traded to the Dallas Stars along with a 4th round pick for two third round picks (DAL, ARZ). With no goalie in their minor league system, Dallas takes a chance on a former highly touted goalie prospect at a low cost.

FORWARD PREVIEW
The Senators had one of the most exciting summers of all time. First, they hit the jackpot when the 14th overall pick which they obtained from the Penguins at the start of the season won the lottery, thus the Senators were gifted a player who has potential to be the greatest two way force of all time, Wes Brandner. Brandner has been called a bigger modern day Bobby Clarke.

With his physical, skating, and defensive game all ready for the NHL, Brandner could have made the Senators out of training camp and been a vast improvement on their thin bottom 6. The Senators opted to send Brandner back to the WHL in order to allow him to improve the offensive side of his game by getting first line minutes, and also to keep his ELC fully in tact.

Equally if not more exciting than getting one of the best first overall picks in years, is that the Senators snagged the 40 goal scorer Taylor Hall from free agency. With an asking price of 9.5M a year, Hall did not come cheap, and became the highest paid Senator of all time. The Senators haven't had a goal scorer like Hall since the days of prime Heatley. With Hall, Konecny, and Stone slotted to play together, will the Senators finally see a line as great as the Pizza line?

The biggest surprise of training camp was Francois Beauchemin not making the team. Beauchemin is set to play another year in the AHL where he'll get top line minutes. The Senators are hoping with his development that Beauchemin could give them a reason to trade or walk away from what might be an expensive Brett Ritchie extension next year.
______________________________

DEFENSE PREVIEW
Ottawa's defense sees a major facelift. Colten Dixon and Kevin Gravel were both shipped out for budget considerations as a result of Hall's expensive contract.

Ottawa obtained Vlasic at last year's trade deadline and come the summer extended the 33 year old defender to a two year 5.9M deal. Vlasic gives Karlsson his most stable and compatible partner since the days of prime Marc Methot. Had Vlasic and Karlsson not gotten injured during the Montreal series last year, the Senators could have arguably made a deep run into the post season.

This will potentially be Torey Krug's final year as a Senator. Krug disappointed with only 44 points last year compared to 60 the year before. Krug did redeem himself with a phenomenal playoff campaign where he put up 7 assists in only 6 games. Unless Krug has a brilliant season, the Senators cannot justify extending him.

Four years after Jared Cowen was dealt for budgetary reasons, Senators fans finally will get a glimpse of the return from that trade. After three strong seasons with the Binghamton Senators, the 6'2” German born Bjorn Graps will play on Ottawa's bottom pairing alongside “Canadian Karlsson” Shannon Froats who also will be making his regular season debut as a Senator.
______________________________

GOALIE PREVIEW
The only major change from last year is that Ty Edmonds is no longer a part of Ottawa's system. Holtby has stayed on as Ottawa's veteran starter. Nedeljkovic still remains questionable as anything more than an NHL backup. He still has potential to develop into a starting goalie, but given he is 24, the Senators are slowly losing hope.
______________________________

THIS WILL BE THE FINAL YEAR OF GM DANIELPALFREDSSON'S CONTRACT
Has he put together a competitive enough team to meet Melnyk's lofty expectations? Or will he get the boot, and have to watch from a distance as the Senators enter the Wes Brandner era of their franchise?

That was one of the most eventful logs I've ever done. We got Hall, were forced to sell off multiple good players for pennies on the dollar in order to fit in his massive 9.5M contract.

I know people will find it very hard to believe that I conveniently won the lottery with the 14th overall pick in a year where there is a 5* prospect.....Wes Brandner is going to be the future of the Senators whether or not I am still GM (knowing CPU GMs they will release him to free agency instead of signing him to an ELC deal).

I'm a few seasons ahead, (With the Senators, or fired?) lots of fun things happen.

With the rise of Zach Werenski out of training camp, it accelerated management's decision to move a defenseman, moving it up from trade deadline to as early as possible. The two names that constantly popped up in rumours were that of Trevor Daley and Jamie Oleksiak -- Daley with a veteran presence, Oleksiak with youth and size.

In the first week of the regular season, a trade was made...

TRADE DEADLINE

At the trade deadline, the Dallas Stars held a 27-31-5 record in what was easily considered to be a disappointing season up to that point, marred with under-performing players (after the top line) and abysmal goaltending. The Stars headed into the deadline dangling every piece with one year left on their deal, and included Lehtonen in talks, potentially looking at an upgrade in goal.

St Louis Blues 2017 Trade Deadline

To :flyers
J. Lehtera (83) & 1st (2017)

To :blues
S. Couturier (84) & 2nd (2017)

Reason: Couturier has Elite potential and three years left on his 2.8M / year contract. Lehtera hasn't delivered and Couturier is more defensive than him.
The 2nd round pick is an early pick.

To :caps
R. Fabbri (74 - Bottom 6 C)

To :blues
C. Glencross (83), 4th (2017), 5th (2018) & 6th (2017)

Reason: To get a player that Nashville wants for Josi.

To :nashville
N. Beaulieu (84), C. Glencross (83), T. Pitlick (76), C. Beach (73) & 2nd (2017 Philly)

To :blues
R. Josi (86), F. Bergmark (71 - 7th LD), K. Fiala (71) & F. Girard (68)

Reason: I need some experience on the blueline. Beaulieu's contract is up and Josi has 4 years left at 4M. The 2nd rounder came from the Couturier trade.

Playoffs

Round 1 (Preds): 4-1 (23-7 GD)
Round 2 (Hawks): 2-4 (12-16 GD)

Hawks went on to win the Stanley Cup, so in my three years as GM we've won the Cup once and lost twice to the eventual winners. Not bad, eh?

Trades

To :isles
J. Brodin (86)

To :blues
T. Hamonic (86)

Reason: Logjam on the left side with Josi, Vannelli and Scandella.
Chose Hamonic over Pulock because Hamonic has higher poise.

To :ducks
D. Booth (82) & P. Bittner (76)

To :blues
N. Spaling (83)

Reason: Booth is declining and Bittner's potential dropped.
Spaling brings poise and is quite good defensively. He has 3 years left at 2.710M / year.

Trades

To :nucks
S. Couturier (85) & 2nd (2019)

To :blues
B. Horvat (85) & 3rd (2019)

Schneider back for game 3.

WCF (Minnesota): 1-4 (14-14 GD)

SAN JOSE SHARKS FIRE DOUG WILSON, HIRE FORMER BUFFALO GM TIM MURRAY

After a disappointing 2016-17 season which saw the Sharks finish 26-48-8, Doug Wilson was fired. The management brogue in Tim Murray, who did a stellar job of rebuilding the Buffalo Sabres back in 2015. Working with nothing but draft picks and a max budget of 92% less than the salary cap, He must set the Sharks up for a championship bout within 3 years, or he will be fired.

2017 DRAFT: WILL "THE NEXT GETZLAF" GO FIRST OVERALL?

Entering the draft, C Zach Poirier is the projected 1st overall pick. Poirier is a cerebral player who has a wicked shot and can dish the puck to his peers. His two-way play is decent, and his skating isn't anything exciting, but his upside is high.

Contending for the top spot is C Sergei Sharov. Sharov spent most of his time in the KHL this year, due to his combination of size and skating. He is a pass first player who possesses a decent shot.

With an outside chance for the #1 pick, Is G Gene Van Riemsdyk. This is not anything close to the goalie classes the last few years, but if you need a starter, he's your guy. He reminds most scouts of Johnathan Quick due to his size and agility.

SHARKS WIN LOTTERY, TRADE UP

The dreams of Sharks fans were realized last night when it was announced they have the 1st overall pick. It is unclear whether or not that will be taking Poirier.

Just before the draft, the Sharks announced announced a trade:

TO BUF
-20th Overall
-15th Overall
-31st Overall
-2018 2nd

TO SJS
-3rd Overall

GM Tim Murray on the trade

"Buffalo has all the core pieces they need to contend and were looking for quality over quantity, While we need more high end prospects in our pool."

SAN JOSE DRAFTS 5 TIMES IN TOP 10, DRAFT SHALIMOV 1ST OVERALL

After getting lucky with the draft, San Jose had the top pick along with 4 others in the top 10. This was due to it being the closest year in NHL history, with a whole 10 points separating 29th to 4th in the league.

San Jose Sharks shocked the league by picking Shalimov. It is unclear if he intends on coming over from the KHL, but if he does, the Sharks have a keeper on their hands. Full Sharks draft is below.

1st Overall: Sergei Shalimov (4.5 Y)
3rd Overall: Sergei Zyuzin (4.5 Y)
5th Overall: David Krenzelok (4Y)
8th Overall: Nikita Li (4Y)
10th Overall: Max Sartois (4Y)

Zach Poirier went 2nd to Arizona, he is 4.5Y as well.

Many are looking at the Zyuzin-Shalimov-Li line as a decade defining force. With Zyuzin coming over for sure, and Li being in the CHL, maybe the Sharks can pursue Shalimov to come to North America?

TRADE DEADLINE UPDATE
-Team Record: 42-16-4, first in the league with 88 points.
-Mid-season, Stone and Ritchie were swapped on Ottawa's top 2 lines. Hall is on pace for 30 goals, which would be his worst goal total in many many years. Despite this, the line is still hotter than any line the Senators have had in well over a decade. Konecny, who only put up 44 points last season is on his way to having a career high in both goals and points. In only 62 games, Brett Ritchie has tied his career best in goals with 21, and is only a few points away from breaking his career points record.
-Karlsson started off very slow playing at a 0.5 PPG pace. After a third of the season went by, Karlsson kicked it into gear, and now has 56 points in 62 games. Ceci, Krug, and Vlasic all have roughly 35 points each. With no powerplay time, Shannon “Canadian Karlsson†Froats has failed to meet the lofty expectations put on him and has only managed 9 points in 62 games. He had 41 points last year in the AHL.
-Both Holtby and Nedeljkovic both have 920+ save percentages. Holtby could very well contend for the Vezina trophy.
-The 6th overall pick from two years ago Francois Beachemin is on fire on the AHL with 57 points and 26 goals in 56 games. Expect Beauchemin to be the first call up if one of Ottawa's top 6 wingers go down in the playoffs.
-Expect Ottawa to look for an experienced two way forward to add to their bottom 6 at the deadline. Given the team just spent 4 picks to “buy†10 million of cap space (spread over 5 years) from the Dallas Stars, they may not have the assets to make a big move.
______________________________

tumblr_m2l6lrAr0Z1rt7mhbo1_500.jpg

OTTAWA MAKE TWO MINOR TRADES AT THE DEADLINE TO IMPROVE THEIR BOTTOM 6

SENATORS ACQUIRE AGEING SHARK
Ottawa makes a minor move at the deadline, acquiring Joe Pavelski from San Jose for a 4th, 5th, and bottom 6 forward Archambault (80oa 3*).
Pavelski is 35 and has declined considerably. He still has put up 12 goals and 40 points in 62 games.

Expect Pavelski to shift to RW and play alongside Cizikas on the third line in an attempt to improve the bottom 6. Pavelski is on the final year of his deal and is a rental.

MCGINN RETURNS TO THE NATION'S CAPITAL
The Senators acquire Jamie McGinn from Minnesota in exchange for fourth line forward Tim Bozon and next year's 2nd round pick. McGinn is a local fan favourite, as he played Junior with the Ottawa 67's. McGinn is on the final year of his deal, but sources say Ottawa might be open to extending him beyond this season if there is mutual interest.
______________________________

END OF SEASON

-Ottawa finishes 54-24-4 with 112 points to tie the Maple Leafs as the top team in the NHL. The tiebreaker is awarded to the Maple Leafs, and thus Ottawa loses the president's trophy.
-New Jersey make the playoffs. Ottawa owns their first round pick from the Mike Hoffman trade during the pre-season. New Jersey making the playoffs devalues the pick considerably.
-The 9.5 million dollar man Taylor Hall has a disappointing year with only 33 goals and 71 points.....you know a player is good when that is considered a letdown.
-Konecny leads the team with 72 points.
-Karlsson has his worst statistical year in a long time with only 68 points. At 30 years old is Karlsson slowing down? Let's hope not, he is signed until the age of 36.
-Holtby had a strong year with a .923 save percentage. He had 41 wins and 8 shutouts. Holtby is the leading candiate for the Vezina trophy amongst hockey journalists.
-Former 6th overall pick Francois Beaucemin had a 30+ goal PPG year in the AHL. Expect to see him in the NHL sooner rather than later.

GAME 1
-Holtby stops the first 16 shots of the game, but 26 minutes in goes down with an injury. The young Nedeljkovic has to go in, does this spell doom for Ottawa?
-The first goal is scored by Zach Fischer half way through the second to give Buffalo a 1-0 lead.
-Karlsson scores mid third, but Girgenson answers right back to restore Buffalo's lead.
-Hall scores on the PP, and with the game tied 2-2, they go to OT.
-Three minutes into OT, Hodgson scores on Nedeljkovic. Holtby had a shutout, Nedeljkovic had a .786 save percentage, stopping only 11 of 14 shots.
-Buffalo take a 1-0 series lead.

GAME 2
-It is revealed the Holtby will be out for the entirety of the series. If Ottawa is going to win, they need Nedeljkovic to step up.
-Half way through the first Yandle scores to takea 1-0 lead.
-Grigorenko scores early in the second, but Konecny responds, Buffalo leads 2-1 going into the third.
-With Ottawa behind by one, Cizikas scores to tie the game.
-Late in the third, Reinhart scores to give Buffalo a 3-2 lead.
-With Ottawa unable to come back, Buffalo takes a 2-0 series lead.
-Goaltending ended up being the difference maker, with Nedeljkovic putting up a .900 compared to Guindon's .930. Ottawa would arguably be up 2 games to none had Holtby not gone down in the middle of game 1.

GAME 3
-Ottawa's offense needs to carry the game if they are to win.
-Larsson scores early in the first to put Ottawa down 1-0.
-Hall continues his hot streak by tieing the game in the second.
-Girgensons scores late in the 2nd to put Buffalo up 2-1.
-With 11 minutes left to go in the third Stone scores, but Buffalo quickly responds, going up 3-2.
-Cizikas scores a huge goal late in the 3rd period to tie the game and sent it to OT.
-10 minutes in the third on their 40th shot of the game, Tyler Ennis scores the game winner.
-Buffalo leads Ottawa 3-0.....

GAME 4
-One devastating injury may have derailed Ottawa's entire season. The odds of them coming back against Buffalo are slim to none.
-Beachemin will be recalled from Binghamton to join Ottawa's lineup for what might be their last game of the post season. Pavelski will be scratched, and Beachemin will play on the third line with Cizikas.
-Buffalo scores first to go up 1-0, but mid way through the second Stone scores and ties the game.
-The game is 1-1 in the third until Hagelin scores to give Buffalo the lead.
-Ennis scores late in the third to put the Sabres up 3-1.
-Reinhart scores an empty netter and the sweep is complete. With a 4-1 win, Buffalo eliminates Ottawa 4-0.
-What sort of repercussions could this ending have on Ottawa's confidence in Nedeljkovic going forward, and Holtby's next contract negotiation?
______________________________

PRE DRAFT: HERE AND THERE
-GM Danielpalfredsson signs a three year extension to stay with the Senators.
“I think we're about to do some very good things, we've had a very good team the last two years but unfortunately timed injuries pulled the carpet out from under us in the playoffs. The scary thing is, with the guys we have in the AHL and CHL, we're only going to get better.â€-GM Danielpalfredsson on his contract extension.
-Andrew Hammond makes the Cup Final for the third time in his highly successful career. The Oilers once again fall short, as the Sabres beat them in 7 games to win the Cup.
-Braden Holtby wins the Vezina trophy. He is the second Senators goalie to win the trophy over the last four years. (Lehner won in 17/18).
-It is the third straight year that Karlsson doesn't win the Norris after having 4 straight wins. Keith Yandle of the Buffalo Sabres walks away with the trophy.
-Expect the Senators to target Neil Bjugstad with their first round pick. Bjugstad is a riser who might go in the top 15, meaning Ottawa would have to trade up to get him.
______________________________

DRAFT DAY
-Ottawa doesn't get their ideal prospect, Bjugstad is taken off the board early by the Florida Panthers at 12. Ottawa instead opts to take a goalie with their pick. Ottawa needs another goalie of the future who will ultimately disappoint them, so why not, they only gave up Mike Hoffman for the pick.

27th Overall-Roy Sutherby 27oa (18yo 4* 69oa BUT G CHL)
Sutherby is a pure butterfly goalie. At the age of 18, it is hard to project his future, but expect Ottawa to take the slow and steady approach with him. At the age of 30, Holtby likely has 5 years left in him and has shown a willingness to extend with Ottawa so don't expect them to rush Sutherby.

STONE AND VLASIC TO TEST THE MARKET NEXT YEAR
Stone and Vlasic have turned down offers to discuss long term extensions and are set to test the market next year. They both are on the final year of their current deal with the Senators.

Vlasic will be 35 next year, and might be posturing to get a longer term deal or a higher dollar amount on a limited term from Ottawa. Vlasic has played well for Ottawa, but they are a budget team and likely cannot take a risk signing a play of Vlasic's age to a long term deal.

Ottawa has Wes Brander, Francois Beauchemin, and Julien Gauthier who all recently graduated as Rwers to the NHL. Stone likely sees the writing on the wall, and at the age of 30 will be looking to join a team where he can have a greater role. Stone spent years floating in and out of Ottawa's top 6 as a result of their RW depth, and probably does not want to put himself in a position for that to happen again.

The question is, does Ottawa keep Stone going into the playoffs, or do they attempt to get some value for him? With Vlasic potentially leaving next year, and Stone stuck on Ottawa's third line, there have been indications that the Senators may be in preliminary talks to package Stone with one of their young defenders in exchange for a solid top 4 veteran defender.

BREAKING NEWS: MARK STONE TRADED TO THE OILERS
Earlier today the Senators requested Mark Stone's 10 team no trade list and quickly found a suitor for the 30 year old perennial Selke candidate.

With Stone set to test the market next year, the Senators reluctantly traded the long time fan favourite to the Edmonton Oilers. Stone was sent along with a 2nd round draft pick in exchange for Martin Marincin.

Stone is on the final year of a 7 year 5.7M contract. Marincin has three years remaining with a cap hit in excess of 6 million.

With Yakupov leaving the team, the Oilers desperately needed a veteran 2nd line Rwer to play behind Eberle. With Ethan Bear, Oscar Klefbom, Justin Schultz, and Darnell Nurse, the Oilers dealt from a position of strength in order to acquire the piece they felt they needed to win the Cup. The Oilers made it to the cup final last year, but lost in game 7 to the Buffalo Sabres.

The Oilers are expected to work out an extension with Stone.

With Vlasic signed to a one year deal, Marincin could potentially find himself playing on the top pairing next to Karlsson as soon as next year. Marincin is a 30 year old 87oa top 4 defender.

FORWARD PREVIEW
The Senators have a problem, but it is a good one to have.....they have too many great right wingers. Even after trading Stone, the Senators have Wes Brandner, Brett Ritchie, Francois Beauchemin, and former 16th overall pick Julien Gauthier. The first three are all ready for top 6 duties. Gauthier isn't ready for the first line, but he is a strong middle 6 playmaker whose being forced down the line up as a consequence of depth.

The Senators organization was said to be shocked at how much progress last year's first overall pick Wes Brandner made during his final year in the CHL. Brandner made the decision to deal Stone much easier, as he came back from the CHL as a much more well rounded offensive threat. In his rookie year, Brandner is expected to be given a chance to fit in beside Konecny and Hall on the first line.

Francois Beauchemin is finally ready for the NHL. The 22 year old sniper had two phenomenal years in the AHL where he honed his ability as a scoring threat. Expect Beachemin to line up next to Cizikas in order to add a scoring touch to Ottawa's third line. Don't be surprised to see Beachemin make it very hard for the Senators not to put him on the second line.

There are lofty expectations on Taylor Hall. With three years left on a 9.5M contract, his 30 goal season last year was considered a disappointment. The Senators gave up quite a bit to obtain Taylor Hall. Despite the fact that he was a free agent, the Senators ultimately had to sell off multiple players (Mike Hoffman, Kevin Gravel, Colten Dixon), and also had to arrange the deal with the Stars that saw them trade Puempel twice, and compensate the Stars with two first rounders, a second rounder, and a third rounder in order for the Stars to retain half of Puempel's salary so that the Senators could remain under Melnyk's internal budget.

DEFENSE PREVIEW
The Senators managed to re-sign Marc Edward Vlasic on a one year deal. Vlasic is looking to test the market after this season, so odds are, his time as a Senators will come to an end. Expect Vlasic to continue his top level pairing with Erik Karlsson.

Can Erik Karlsson return to Norris form? It has been three years since Karlsson's streak of four straight Norris trophies was snapped. At the age of 30, is Karlsson finally slowing down? Or could he surprise us all and match his career high of 97 points?

Cody Ceci has never gotten the credit he deserves as the anchor of the Senators second pair behind Karlsson. As a result of the Senators acquiring Martin Marincin, this might be the first year where Ceci has a stable partner who he can look to form long term chemistry with.

The Senators bottom pairing remains the same, with Bjorn Graps and Shannon Froats playing together. Graps just signed a two year 2M bridge deal, and with Vlasic possibly leaving the Senators after this year, might be able to cash in huge if he is given the top pairing spot with Karlsson next season.
______________________________

GOALIE PREVIEW
Rumour has it that the Senators have been quietly shopping around Nedeljkovic. The team lost faith in him last year when he was unable to step up and save the team's playoff run when Holtby went down with an injury.

With Holtby signed to a three year deal, Nedeljkovic won't get the games he needs to develop into a starter, so it makes sense for the Senators to trade him while he still has value as a prospect.

The Senators would want a first round pick for Nedeljkovic, and would look to flip that pick to a team for an older starting goalie to play as the 1B behind Holtby. Salary considerations make this very hard to do, as the team trading the 1B would likely have to be willing to retain half the salary.

THE THREE YEAR PLAN
According to sources within the organization, GM Danielpalfredsson has a three year plan to win the Senators a Stanley Cup.

Braden Holtby's three year extension was a deliberate move. Holtby, Hall, Turris, Marincin, and Cizikas all have three years remaining on some of the team's most expensive contracts. Karlsson has more than three years left but is expected to slow down considerably by the time three years passes.

Wes Brandner was also kept in the CHL last year to maintain his three year ELC deal. The expectation is that Brander's first extension is going to be very costly, and even if he made the team marginally better last year as a bottom 6 player, it wasn't worth having to sell off one of the team's core members a year early. With Brandner's progress, the Senators now have a first line right wing at less than 1 million per for the next three years.

The Senator's GM has a 3 year contract. Expect him to go all in, moving any pieces necessary to get the players needed to win the team a cup. The team will then move on from their current core and attempt to build a winner around a new younger core of Konecny who is still very young as he started on the Senators as an 18 year old, Brandner, Beauchemin, Ladd, Froats, Tokarski, Ceci, Graps and Sutherby.

The feeling is that if Konecny agrees to an extension, with Konecny, Brandner, and Beauchemin, the Senators have a world class first line going forward which makes it much easier to build a team.

SEASON 8 BEGINS HERE

TRADE DEADLINE UPDATE
-Team Record: 44-13-7 (First In The League)
-Wes Brandner is having an unreal rookie year on Ottawa's top line. He is not a scoring force, but that was never the expectation. Brandner is quickly becoming known as the most intimidating forward in the NHL, he leads all forwards with 243 hits, and he is only 7 hits away from the NHL lead which is held by defender Tyler Myers. Brandner is a +29 and is seventh in rookie scoring with 10 goals and 29 points in 64 games.
-Ottawa's second rookie forward, Francois Beauchemin is having a successful transition to the NHL. He is second in goals amongst all rookies with 16, and has 33 points.
-Erik Karlsson is having a bounce back year. He leads all NHL defenders with 66 points in 64 games. Taylor Hall also has increased his production as he is well on his way to hitting the 40 goal mark. Hall is tied for 6th in the league in goals scored.
-Braden Holtby is making a case to repeat as Vezina winner. As of the trade deadline he has a .936 save percentage.
-Don't expect Ottawa to be very active at the deadline. Their team is stacked, and they have very few assets to move.

BREAKING NEWS: SENATORS ACQUIRE EVGENI MALKIN FROM THE PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
Despite having very few assets to work with, GM Danielpalfredsson was able to pull a rabbit out of his hat and the Senators were able to make what might be the biggest move of the trade deadline and acquire NHL legend Evgeni Malkin from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Malkin who is 35 years old is on the final year of his contract, and might be retiring after this season. Malkin's numbers have slid considerably, but are still impressive. He has put up 19 goals and 43 points thus far in 64 games with the Penguins.

This is clearly an indication that GM Danielpalfredsson is certain that the Senators are cup contenders this year. The team is first in the league, and is void of prospects depth or draft picks, so Malkin comes at what might be a high long term cost.

The primary piece of the deal was 24 year old former 32nd overall draft pick, Alex Debrincat. Debrincat is a lightning fast playmaker who was obtained by Ottawa for the sole purpose of helping develop Francois Beachemin into a scoring winger in the AHL. Debrincat, has since seen his development halt as a result of there being no opening's at centre on Ottawa's squad. With Malkin gone, Debrincat will likely get an opportunity to play in Pittsburgh's top 6 right away which could save his career.

Ottawa acquires
Evgeni Malkin (86oa/35yo/1 year left @ 9.5M)

Pittsburgh acquires
Alex Debrincat (80oa 4*/24yo/RFA)
Jamie McGinn (1 YEAR LEFT UFA 81oa CAP REASONS)

END OF SEASON UPDATE
-The Senators finish first in the league and win the President's Trophy. (54-19-9/117 points). The Mike Hoffman trade was a great move for the Devils, as Sam Steel and the Devils have finally found a winning formula. They were second in the league behind Ottawa with 115 points.
-Rookie Wes Brandner finishes first among forwards in hits with 305 and sevenths among forwards in takeaways with 79. He is also a +27. He finishes with 11 goals and 35 points. The Senators are hoping that the experience of playing on the first line with Hall and Konecny will help develop Brandner's offensive game. Brandner has an elite shot and puck skills, but his offensive awareness is lagging behind.
-Hall finishes with 38 goals.
-Beachemin finishes seventh in rookie scoring with 40 points. This is while spending most of the year on the third line, although he did get power play time.
-Karlsson had his best season since 2018/2019 as he put up 80 points in 82 games to lead all NHL defenders in points.
-The trade to Edmonton was a good move for Mark Stone. He notched 32 goals and 59 points, his best totals in years. Throughout Stone's time on Ottawa, he was in and out of the top 6 and made to play more of a two way game, which resulted in his numbers being artificially low.
-Marincin fit in well on the Senators, he was second in points amongst Senators defenders with 37.

PRE-DRAFT: HERE AND THERE
-Karlsson wins the Norris for the first time in four seasons. It is his 6th career Norris trophy.
-Braden Holtby wins his second straight Vezina trophy, and also takes home the William Jennings award.
-Neither of Ottawa's rookies win the Calder.
-Expect Ottawa to try and grab multiple late picks in the next two drafts in order to rejuvenate their prospect pool on the cheap.
-Malkin is not retiring. He is open to an extension with Ottawa.
-There are rumours that Holtby could be gone at that draft if the Senators can find a starting goalie to trade for. The Senators are starting to get the read on Holtby that he can be great in the regular season, but collapse in the playoff. With two straight Vezina trophies and only a limited NTC, management feels they have to explore the opportunity of selling high on Holtby. They'll only move him to a Western team and would have to ask him for his trade list. Holtby's abysmal play as a Senator in the playoffs has thrown a wrench into GM Danielpalfredsson's three year plan.

NHL ENTRY DRAFT TRANSACTIONS
-In an attempt to repopulate their prospect pool on the cheap, Ottawa trades next year's third round pick to Arizona for Arizona's 4th round pick this year, their 5th round pick next year, and this year's 5th.
-Ottawa deals their 25 year old backup minor league goalie to Carolina for a 4th and a 5th.
-BREAKING: Long time third line center Casey Cizikas (82oa) has been dealt to San Jose in exchange for a 3rd round pick (70oa) and a 4th round pick (100oa). The 31 year old centre has two years left at 3 million per. Is this a sign that a Malkin extension is in the works?
______________________________

The Ottawa Senators have inked 6th overall pick Francois Beauchemin to an 8 year deal. The Senators have been known for avoiding bridge deals and locking up young talent long term. It is an immense compliment to Beauchemin to have the Senators put enough trust in him to be willing to go eight years on his deal.

The Senators also lock up ageing superstar Evegeni Malkin to a one year deal at an affordable cost of 3 million per. Expect Malkin to take a back seat this year and provide scoring from the third line.

SIGNIFICANT EXTENSIONS
-Francois Beauchemin 2nd Line Rwer 3.6x8 year (Limited NTC after the age of 27)
-Shannon Froats Top 6 OFD 1.1x2 (1 Way)
-Evgeni Malkin 3x1 year
______________________________

Guindon.jpg

BREAKING NEWS
Senators shock the hockey world when they sign former Buffalo Sabres 5th overall pick 27 year old Elite goalie Louis-Philip Guindon to a 6 year 9.4M contract with a full NTC. This signing came out of left field, and may have to do with Holtby's collapse in the first round of the playoffs last year.

Odds are, the Senators will now ask for Holtby's 10 team list and attempt to deal him out West in an attempt to shed his salary. Signing Guindon is risky for Ottawa, because if none of the 10 teams want Holtby, they'll have to figure out another way to reach their budget. Rumour has it that the Toronto Maple Leafs were in on Guindon, which further motivated Ottawa to sign him as a defensive move to stop a divisional rival from getting him.

HOLTBY GETS A CASE OF THE BLUES
HOLTBY'S TEN TEAM LIST: STL, ANA, EDM, CAR, NYI, NJ, TB, BUF, NYR, LA

Two time Vezina winner Braden Holtby is no longer a member of the Senators.

The Senators have been a goalie graveyard during GM Danielpalfredsson's tenure, and Holtby's name is now the latest to get a burial plot. With the younger, former Conn Smythe winner and Stanley Cup Champion Louis-Philip Guindon hitting free agency, the Senators couldn't pass up the opportunity to move on from Holtby after his meltdown in the first round of last year's playoffs.

Holtby presented his ten team list to the Senators, which was actually closer to a four team list since the Senators had no intention of moving Holtby to the East. Had the Senators not been able to find a taker for Holtby, they may have ended up having to move a different player in order to get under their organizations internal budget.

Earlier today, it broke that the Senators had traded the 33 year old Braden Holtby to the Blues for 33 year old Kevin Shatenkirk. We now can reveal the full details of that trade.

Shattenkirk was sent over with half his salary retained for the next two seasons, putting his cap hit for Ottawa at 3 million. The Blues have over 20 million in cap space, but in order to get the Blues to agree to such a deal, Ottawa had to add to Holtby.

Ottawa sent with Holtby 19 year old first round pick goalie Roy Sutherby. Sutherby has great potential to be a goalie in this league, but with Guindon between the pipes for Ottawa for the next six years, there is no room for him to grow with the team.

Ottawa also sent fan favourite Shannon “Canadian Karlsson†Froats. Froats is a player that the Senators had high hopes for, but he is looking more like “Canadian David Rundbland†than “Canadian Karlssonâ€. Froats has progressed very little since his draft year. He should get an opportunity on St.Louis' top 4, and on their powerplay. At the age of 23, at the very worst, he is a bottom pairing defender and a power play specialist. If things turn around for him, he could be top 4 OFD.

With Shattenkirk coming back to Ottawa in the trade, and 21 year old 2020 13th OA pick Brian Ladd leapfrogging past Froats, the Senators considered Froats an expendable piece that they could use to add value to the trade.

Shattenkirk and Holtby were considered equal assets, but with Ottawa needing St.Louis to retain in order to meet their internal budget, Ottawa had to overpay for Shattenkirk.

Alex-Nedeljkovic-Save.jpg

PRE SEASON - HERE AND THERE
-Nedeljkovic has been traded to Nashville for a 2nd and a 5th. This was a cap motivated move, and a sad day for Ottawa fans as we see both pieces of the Bobby Ryan trade (16th OA pick Shannon “Future David Rundbland†Froats+Nedeljkovic) amount to very little for Ottawa while Bobby Ryan helped Carolina climb back into being a playoff team.

Nashville was in need of an experienced backup goalie so the trade was an easy one for them to make.

Ottawa signed Guy Desjardins who had spent over a month as a free agent with no takers. Desjardins 83oa 4R* is unproven as a backup and might be better suited to start in the AHL, but he was signed for an ELC deal that costs only .755k vs Nedeljkovic's price of 1.8M. The Senators are hoping Desjardins can adjust to the NHL and provide them with a cost efficient backup goalie that won't hurt their team. Desjardins was drafted late in the third round of the 2020 draft by Tampa Bay, but went unsigned.

-Ottawa signs grinder Jonah Gadjovich. Gadjovich was a 7th round pick in 2017, but went unsigned by the Oilers. The signing came out of nowhere for Gadjovich, as he had no interested teams in the first month of free agency and was preparing to sign a contract in the KHL. At .775 per over the next three seasons, Gadjovich will likely be expected to provide Ottawa with affordable bottom 6 play.
______________________________

FORWARD PREVIEW
The team's top six remains mostly the same, with the main difference being that Beauchemin has won the number two RW spot from Ritchie out of training camp. The Senators already know that first overall pick Wes Brandner is an elite physical and two way force, but they expect him to turn heads this year with an improved offensive game. The Senators will be happy with 50 points from him. They expect him to eventually grow into a 60 point player. Keep in mind, Ottawa has always been a team that scored by commission, and 60 points usually is near the amount their top scorer puts up.

The top 6 looks very different from last season. Gone from the third line is two way mainstay Casey Cizikas. In his place is a slowed down future hall of famer, Evgani Malkin. Malkin did not look promising in training camp, expect Ottawa to lean heavily on fourth centre veteran Curtis Lazar if Malkin slows down too much. The Senators are hoping that Lindberg, Malkin, and Ritchie can find a scoring chemistry on the third line.

In Gadjovich, the Senators found an exceptionally cheap bottom 6 grinder in the free agent market. Expect Gadjovich to add a nasty element that the Senators bottom 6 was lacking in last season.
______________________________

DEFENSE PREVIEW
The major change in this year's defense would be the loss of Vlasic to free agency and the addition of Kevin Shattenkirk. Expect Shattenkirk to play top 2 minutes alongside defending Norris trophy winner Erik Karlsson.

Brian Ladd made a huge leap in his first pro season. The 2020 13th overall pick is expected to replace Shannon “Canadian David Rundbland†Froats on the bottom pairing. He'll also be expected to quarter back one of the power play pairings.
______________________________

GOALIE PREVIEW
Not since the signing of Dominik Hasek in 2004 have Ottawa fans seen their team gain such an important goalie from free agency as they did when they signed Louis-Philip Guindon. With a six year 9.4M contract and a full no trade clause, Guindon will be part of the Senators for the long hall.

At only 27 years of age, Guindon has already won a Conn Smyth trophy and a Stanley Cup. Guindon has a career .932 playoff save percentage over 31 games. It has taken GM Danielpalfredsson more than 8 seasons to find stability in net, and now with LP Guindon, he has it.

The Senators traded backup goalie Nedeljkovic and signed former 88th overall pick Guy Desjardins to an ELC in the summer. Desjardins was originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning but hit the free agent market when they opted not to sign him. Desjardins is inexprienced, but the Senators are a budget team, and with LP Guindon playing a majority of the games, saving over a million dollars on a backup goalie could prove to be a wise move.

Just got offered a 26 year old, 91 overall Jakub Voracek for a 2016 1st and 2nd... I don't know what to do

he has 1 year year left and so does Okposo, Strome, and Nielsen. There's no way I can re-sign them with 11 mill... but 91 overall

Alfie you've won 1 cup ?

Heartbreaking series there.

Just one in the third year after acquiring Duncan Keith.

We ended up playing Washington again in the fourth year in the conference final, but lost to them in (I think) 6 games. That was Keith's last year as a Senators.

Very hard to win a cup because I run on a budget 10 percent below the cap, so it makes it really hard to build and keep a time long term. Lots of re-tooling. I can't really go for a long rebuild either because I keep getting these short term contracts and have to meet the GMs expectations.

I find rebuilding after the main 2 drafts to be fun, because you find 6'11 4 star defenseman at 81 overall with the 10th pick.

Also if I get another Russian who's first name starts with S I can get a pretty nice line name.

Jarrett Meyer is a fun pick. I think he's in the third round of the first draft and is a big 6'11" LDFD.

Busted for me in Ottawa, but that was because I wasn't tending to my AHL lines. He did pretty well for me in my previous Colorado GM mode.

I've never seen this Jarrett Meyer.

The next GM mode after Dallas is going to be my last one for NHL 15. I'm thinking Florida, maybe?
