GREG PATERYN JOINS THE CANUCKS
Early during the season, the Canucks shopped around for a solid bottom pairing stay at home defender to compliment Ehrhoff. They found a trading partner in Montreal and acquired Greg Pateryn in exchange for a 4th round draft pick. AHL grinder Alexandre Grenier was also sent to Montreal in the deal. Pateryn has been given Weber's spot on the bottom pairing.

FIRST IN THE PACIFIC
Vancouver is first in the Pacific division with a 35-21-6 record and 76 points. There is still a realistic chance Vancouver could miss the playoffs as they are only currently in by 5 points. The race in the West is very tight.

HOW DO YOU LIKE DEM APPLES?
The Apple Sauce line is having a stellar season. Happy Sedin leads the league in assists with 54, and has 66 points on the season. While Serious Sedin has 24 goals and 59 points. Vrbata leads Vancouver in goals with 28 and has 53 points. Vrbata is on pace to beat his career high of 35 goals and could possibly crack 40 goals for the first time in his NHL career.

SOLID LIKE A KIA
Sutter is having a strong season as the 2C with 18 goals and 36 points thus far. Horvat is also having a strong season, and showing that he has a scoring touch with 34 points on the season.

ELLIS UNDER PERFORMING?
After a very slow start that saw multiple fans act very critical towards him, Ryan Ellis settled into his new team and has now put up 10 goals and 26 points.

RYAN MILLER IS FANTASTIC
Miler has had a great season thus far with a .920 save percentage. Canucks fans were critical of Benning for signing Miller last year, but this season he has raised his stock tremendously across the NHL and is seen as one of the top goalies in the league. Along with the Sedins, he's seen as instrumental to carrying the Canucks' team.

BREAKING NEWS: PATRICK KANE SHIPPED TO MONTREAL
The hockey landscape has just been altered, as Montreal has acquired Patrick Kane from the Blackhawks.

There had been rumblings in the off season that Kane would be traded because enough was enough, and Patrick Kane was more trouble than he was worth for Chicago. After Kane started the season with the Blackhawks, the rumours died down, and most had assumed that the Blackhawks had decided to keep the 28 year old winger for the remainder of his massive 10.5M per contract.

In what is a huge shock to the hockey world, the Blackhawks sent Kane and a third round pick to Montreal in exchange for Dalton Thrower, Montreal's 1st round pick in the upcoming draft (Projected 25-30), and Martin Reway.

There are mixed feelings about the trade throughout the hockey world. Strictly from a talent perspective, Montreal paid very little and got Kane at an absolute steal of a price. Rumour has it that multiple owners refused to allow their GMs to place an offer for Kane because they were concerned that acquiring Kane so soon after his latest incident would result in a media **** storm for their organization.

As far as the return goes, Thrower is player whose stock has sky rocketed since being taken near the end of the second round a few years back, he is considered to be a can't miss future top 4 defender (21yo 4G*). Martin Reway is a marginal prospect who might become a good middle 6 scorer, and Montreal's first will not be very high but it should net Chicago a good player in a draft that is being touted as one of the deepest in years. Still, none of those pieces will come close to providing the talent that Kane did.

With the addition of Kane, Montreal has kickstarted their weakest point, which is their flat offense. It is speculated that Montreal hasn't just paid Thrower, Reway, and a 1st for Kane, but that they'll also pay in the form of losing or having to sell off multiple players this off season in order to get under the cap when Kane's massive 10.5M extension kicks in this off season. (Remember, we're in a weird EA time warp since you have to start in 2015, but extensions are in place)

Montreal moved out no cap with this trade as Reway and Thrower are both prospects so they must have felt that setting themselves up for a potential cap hell was worth picking up one of the most dynamic wingers in the game at a bargain of a price.

Some analysts and fans seem to think that with this trade, Montreal might have set themselves up for cap hell as soon as this off season. Others think that the Canadiens just scooped up one of the most dynamic wingers in the game and have made themselves instant cup contenders.

ANAHEIM ACQUIRE BOYCHUK, SEND TOP PROSPECT NICK RITCHIE TO THE ISLANDERS
Anaheim has acquired Johnny Boychuk, but have paid a steep price to do so. They've sent former 10th overall draft pick Nick Ritchie to the Islanders. Ritchie projects as a top 6 power forward, but the Ducks are desperate to clinch a playoff spot, and without added help could find themselves on the outside looking in come April.

VANCOUVER ACQUIRE JAGR
With playoffs in sight, the Vancouver Canucks have acquired Jaromir Jagr from the basement dwelling Panthers. Jagr has 19 goals and 50 points on the season, and is signed to a 5.4M per contract that'll still have a year remaining after this season. Whether he'll retire or play through his contract is yet to be known.

The Panthers acquired veteran right winger Alexandre Burrows in the deal. Burrows is an inferior player to Jagr, but unlike Jagr, he isn't at risk to retire at the end of the season and gives the Panthers a top 6 player for next season.

The Canucks had to retain 1.6M of Burrows 4.5M contract to get the deal done, meaning, if Jagr doesn't retire, they'll be on the hook for nearly a combined 7M next season. This shouldn't be a problem as the Canucks don't have any major raises, and Ehrhoff's 5M contract will expire, which should give them some flexibility.

UP NEXT: END OF SEASON.....do the Canucks make the playoffs, or do they crash and burn like Hyundai's 2016 Santa Fe model would if it were put up against Kia's award winning 2016 Sorento SX model?

Fantastic as always bud! What do you do about the 2015 draft as you already have the players selected in the draft on there teams?

It is similar to if you start at draft day on regular rosters, EA creates an extra draft. So it seems like the game will take guys who weren't drafted in real life and boost their potential to match what the 2015 draft is like in the game. Meaning, you'll have 4.5 star guys throughout most of the first round, 4 star guys in the second and some of the third, and then 3.5 star guys throughout most of the rest. They'll just be the left over CHLers instead of the proper names like McDavid/Strome/etc as those players have already been assigned to their real life team.

2016 draft is pretty good. Auston Mathews is in it (pretty sure created by the guy who updated the rosters), and he usually goes 1 or 2.

This GM mode is on a weird timeline, since it is the 2016 rosters, but you cannot start a GM mode in any other year than 2015.

What was the trade dammit!?!?!?!

Where did the Sedins go?

Sedins ain't going anywhere. They are an institution and I am going to bring them a cup!

Regarding the Patrick Kane trade. There is a glitch with the updated rosters where the real life 2016 contract extensions are in place (seriously, not sure how this guy edited the game this in depth), but they don't appear until the 2016 off season begins.

The Kane trade was just a weird coincidence because of the way these updated contracts work in this roster update I am using.

The Chicago AI has no way of knowing Kane is actually extended, so being a UFA on the supposed last year of his deal, he is put on the block at the deadline. If you play GM mode, you know the CPUs do this all the time with UFAs and it is normal.

Montreal being a playoff team trades for him thinking he is a UFA who is on the final year of an expiring 6.3M deal, and then once re-sign phase hits his real life contract extension of 10.5M will appear which is going to cause all kinds of fun as it'll put Montreal at or over the cap.

I thought that was the "BIGGEST TRADE IN MODERN NHL HISTORY" and was going to call you a Trade Tease... Nobody likes a tease.

@belligerenthockeyfan needs to get some help. Anger issues!!?

The Kane trade was pretty brutal though.

Good call on Burr for Jagr. I will try to move him tonight as well. He was choked I traded Higgins to Nashville for a 3rd (or 2nd?)

Getting Jagr at the first trade deadline is like an NHL 15 ritual......his value is so low in the game because he is like 57 years old and the Panthers almost never make the playoffs. Jagr almost always retires after the first year.

If EA had a sense of humour, they'd program the game so that Jagr never retires.

Because the CPU AI is so bad with cap management, Chicago probably ends up winning the trade long term just because of Kane's 10.5M cap hit, which makes no sense, but that's how it is.

Hope you have more luck with the Sedins than I did in my last playthrough with Vancouver....I did win a Cup, but it was after they had both retired.

After losing back to back Stanley Cup finals the Detroit Red Wings will head into the off-season with plenty of uncertainty. Jaromir Jagr, Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, Niklas Kronwall, Johan Franzen and Justin Williams could all retire in the off-season, this could completely decapitate the Red Wings roster. Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie shared this tweet:

"Told that the whole Detroit ORG, is completely devastated right now. Back to back losses in SCF has left everyone drained and heartbroken" @RealBobbyMac

"Lidstrom has vowed that changes are coming, is awaiting news on retirements. Will have that news before draft and he will react accordingly. Team will look different, not sure how much but could be drastic." @RealBobbyMac"

END OF SEASON 1 UPDATE

END OF SEASON
Moving a key player in Alexander Burrows to acquire Jaromir Jagr as a possible rental paid off as the Canucks clinched their division title and finished fourth in the entire league with a 47-28-7 record and 101 points.

The Canucks had a strong on ice product, they were 10th in GFPG and 4th in GAPG. With very few offensive minded forwards outside of the Apple Sauce line, their powerplay struggled as it was 20th in the league but on the flip side their team make up which heavily consists of grinders and two way forwards lead to their PK being the second best in the entire league.

Fans have bought into the Canucks this season and are optimistic that the team can have a deep run. The Canucks will face the St.Louis Blues in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

ROUND 1 VS ST.LOUIS (44-32-6)

GAME 1
-Miller faces off against his former team.
-Higgins and Jagr put Vancouver up 2-0 during the second.
-With the third winding down, and Vancouver up 2-0, Schwartz gets St.Louis back into the game and we now have a nail biting 2-1 score.
-Ellis scores his first playoff goal as a Canuck, but Boyes answers back for St.Louis, we've got a 3-2 game in the closing minutes of the third.
-With a minute thirty to go, Hamhuis scores an empty netter to ice the game for Vancouver. Vancouver up 1-0 in the series!
____________________

GAME 2
-There's a lot of hype around this playoff run, and Vancouver could cement their status as a Cup favourite by going up 2-0 against the Blues.
-The Blues start out strong, taking a 1-0 lead, but by the end of the first period, Vancouver is up 2-1.
-Tarasenko ties the game in the third, but Vrbata comes back and gives Vancouver another lead. Van up 3-2.
-Just when Canucks fans think they have the game under control, Berglund scores to tie the game at 3 a piece. We're heading for overtime.
-Ryan Miller quiets the haters. In what might be the GREATEST game of his career, he faces 54 shots but remains a brick wall in double OT, which includes killing a 5 on 3 PP. In the second OT, Jaromir Jagr beats Brian Elliot to give Vancouver a dramatic 4-3 win. They now lead the series 2-0.
____________________

GAME 3
-Vancouver has all the momentum in the world as they go into a crucial game three against St.Louis.
-PATERRRRRYN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Scores the first goal. It is always magical when a bottom pairing stay at home defender scores a crucial goal........
-Things aren't looking good for St.Louis, Vancouver go up 3-0 early.....but they get arrogant....they get lazy. They let up.
-St.Louis battles back, and all of a sudden, they've stolen all the momentum. With two quick goals, we now have a 1 goal game in the third period, Vancouver up 3-2.
-Vancouver needs someone to step up and score an insurance goal, cue the Apple Sauce line. Vrbata scores to put Van up 4-2, how do you like dem apples?
-STL isn't done yet. Brouwer scores, it's 4-3, could we be going to OT?
-AND IT IS A HAT TRICK. Jagr ices the game with his third goal of the night. He is drinking gatorade from the fountain of youth. Vancouver wins 5-3 and their trade deadline acquisition is paying off beautifully. Vancouver is a game away from taking the series and heading to the second round.
____________________

GAME 4
-Blues fans are hoping for a miracle. They are down 3-0 in the series, which usually means it is just a matter of time before they are eliminated.
-Both teams put a goal on the board in the first period, but solid goaltending and grinding defensive play leaves the game tied going into the third.
-It looks like we're heading to a dramatic OT game BUT NO DAN HAMHUIS SCORES! VANCOUVER UP 2-1, THEY ARE MINUTES AWAY FROM ADVANCING TO THE SECOND ROUND!
-With a 2-1 win, the Canucks have swept the Blues. They are heading to the second round.

ROUND 2 VS LOS ANGELES (44-31-7)

GAME 1
-Vancouver go up 2-0 in the first, but Voynov fights back for LA, and cuts the lead to 2-1.
-A Sedin (one of them, they both look the same) scores in the second, Vancouver has a 3-1 lead.
-Half way through the third, Kopitar scores, it's 3-2, can Vancouver hold on?
-At 28 shots a piece, Vancouver was one goal better than LA. They hold on to win 3-2 and take a 1-0 series lead.
____________________

GAME 2
-The hype is building in Vancouver. The fans thought the bad man Benning had ruined their team, but it turns out, they weren't in that bad of a position after all. Overzealous comparisons to Vancouver's magical 1994 run begin popping up.
-Dustin Brown gives LA to an early 1-0 lead.
-Vancouver ties the game but both Kopitar and Carter put goals on the board, LA up 3-1, could this be Vancouver's first loss of the playoffs?
-Going into the third down 3-1, Sutter channels the spirit of Benning and like a 2016 Kia Sorento with its patented power steering, he carries the puck down the ice and blasts one past Quick. Vancouver within 1 with half the third period to go. Can they come back?
-With only 20 shots on goal, Vancouver can't score. LA holds on, and defeat them 3-2.
____________________

GAME 3
-Hyper reactionary fans spent the night calling into sports radio shows and blasting the Canucks organization. Prior to yesterday they were heroes and this was a magical run, but after last night's loss they are terrible and suck at everything.
-Vancouver needs offense if they are going to beat an elite goalie like Quick. They come into the game playing hard and manage to out shoot LA in the first period. Old man Jagr steps up and gives Vancouver a 1-0 lead.
-In a tight goalie battle, the game remains tied at 1 until mid way through the third. Higgins beats Quick to give Van a 2-1 lead.
-With a minute to go, Prust scores an empty netter to put Van up 3-1, but wait! King responds by scoring one for LA, and we're right back to a one goal game. Van up 3-2.
-During the final minute, LA pelt Miller with shots. The goalie is pulled, but Miller stands on his head, and Vancouver win. They take a 2-1 series lead.
____________________

GAME 4
-Everything is amazing. Kias are great cars, just reliable affordable auto mobiles. The Canucks are back on Vancouver's good side after winning a game. Fans are now posting threads on popular hockey prospect message boards such as "Is this Vancouver team the greatest playoff team ever assembled", "Could the Sedins beat Gretzky and a clone of Gretzky".
-We're back in LA for a HUGE game 4. The Sedin that looks angry in his picture scores first, Vancouver up 1-0.
-Vrbata adds another goal, and VAN have a 2-0 lead after the first.
-The game remains locked at 2-0 until Vrbata scores his second goal of the night to give Van a 3-0 lead.
-In his best game of the series, Miller shuts out LA. Vancouver is up 3-1 in the series and they now just need to win one more game in order to make the conference final.
____________________

GAME 5
-In what could be a series deciding game, Vancouver goes up 1-0 early.
-Miller is playing out of his mind. I guess video game Miller is amazing or something, because he is
stopping everything LA sends at him.
-In an anti-climatic game, VAN add two more goals. Vrbata gets his fifth of the post season and continues his hot streak. Well, everybody is on a hot streak.
-Vancouver win the game 3-0 and take the series 4 games to 1.

CONFERENCE FINAL VS ANAHEIM (41-33-8)

GAME 1
-It looks like trading away a top prospect in Ritchie may have paid off, as Anaheim have clawed their way to the conference final. Vancouver are on a hot run, having only lost a single game in the first two rounds of the playoffs.
-In what is a huge blow to a Canucks team with little depth, Edler is injured and will be out. He is likely out until the third or fourth game in the series. Can the Canucks rally back without one of their best defenders? Veteran Matt Bartkowski will sub in.
-Miller has an astonishing .944 save percentage during the first two rounds of the playoffs, can he continue his hot streak?
-In a series that is being sold as Kesler vs the fan base that hates his guts, Kesler scores on the first shot of the game for Anaheim to rub it into the Vancouver fans.
-Hagelin adds another goal, giving Anaheim a 2-0 lead after the first.
-Perry scores in the closing seconds of the second period. Things aren't looking good for Vancouver who are down 3-0.
-Jansen breaks Andersen's shutout, but it is not enough. For the first time in the playoffs, Vancouver is down in a series. Anaheim lead the series 1-0.
____________________

GAME 2
-Edler mans up and is medically cleared significantly earlier than expected. He is not 100 percent, so he'll play on the bottom pairing and see sheltered minutes.
-The game remains tied until half way through the second when Cogliano scores to put Anaheim up 1-0.
-Kesler and Stoner both add goals in the third, things aren't looking good for Vancouver.*
-Vancouver lose 3-0, and now are down 2-0 in the series.
____________________

GAME 3
-In a series where the Canucks are struggling to score, arguably their best offensive player Jaromir Jagr is now injured and might be out for the remainder of the series. They traded Burrows for Jagr, so they don't have their previous second line RWer to replace him with.*
-Sven Baertschi is called up from the Comets. Baertschi had 27 goals this season in the AHL. In a do or die move, with no right handed forwards to call on the team completely re-jigs their second line by shifting Sutter to right wing and moving Horvat up to the second line centre position. Nicklas Jensen is also called up from the AHL and will centre the third line. The Canucks are hoping these changes can light a fire under the team as they've only scored 1 goal so far this series.
-The game remains tied at 0 until the second period when Perry scores two consecutive goals to give Anaheim a 2-0 lead.
-Sutter scores Vancouver's first goal to cut the lead to 2-1.
-Anaheim add another goal in the third, and it is too much. Vancouver lose 3-1 and are down 3-0 in the series.
____________________

GAME 4
-In a last ditch attempt to trigger offense, the Canucks have split up their two best offensive players, the Sedins.*
-Canucks take a 1-0 lead with a Horvat goal. THINGS ARE LOOKING UP!!!!
-Vatanen ties the game in the second. Lindholm quickly adds a goal but AHL CALL UP JENSEN TIES THE GAME.
-Horvat scores his second goal of the game to give Vancouver a 3-2 lead.
-AHL CALL UP SVEN BAERTSCHI SCORES!!!! OMG THINGS ARE GOING WELL.
-In what is the biggest moment of his young career so far, future Vancouver legend/hockey hall of famer Bo Horvat scores an empty netter to put Vancouver up 5-2, but it isn't just any empty netter.....it is a HAT TRICK GOAL.*
____________________

GAME 5
-Jagr is still out.
-Vrbata scores on the first shot of the game, but Sekac ties the game before the end of the first. 1-1.
-The game remains tied at 1 until the third when Maroon and Sekac both score and give Anaheim a commanding 3-1 lead. Can Vancouver come back and force a game 6?
-The Canucks fire back, the clock is winding down, they are desperate, but they can't seem to get anything going. The clock hits 0 and the Canucks phenomenal run is over! They've lost to Anaheim and are now eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Love it dannyp! Almost as much as I love the safety and reliability of a Kia!

Jar was a great addition, and Miller was an EA God!

Love the post game reactions, ccompletely accurate (live in the Canucks region).

I assume this is the all encompassing GM/Dynasty thread. It is just it was made before NHL 16 came out so it was called the NHL 15 thread.

I look forward to seeing what morale brings to some NHL 16 GM logs.

Jagr Returns To Home Planet:
It was clear after facing a big tough team like Anaheim, that the grind of the NHL was too much for old man Jagr's 44 year old body. As previously rumoured, Jagr opted to retire at the end of the season.

Ehrhoff To Test Free Agency:
After a strong season where he put up 36 points and was an integral part of Vancouver's deep playoff run, Christian Ehrhoff is expected to test the market and seek a long term pay day. Whether or not Vancouver will put in an offer after July 1st is unknown.

NHL AWARD SHOW SUMMARY
After a dominating season, Crosby returned to the top of the hockey world. In what might be his most successful season, he took home the Art Ross, Hart Memorial, Rocket Richard, and Ted Lindsey awards.

Slava Voynov redeemed himself in the eyes of society. Not by repenting for his actions, learning, and becoming a better person....NO....by being amazingly good at a sport! In a huge surprise, after pumping iron in prison and putting on 30 lbs, Voynov had a breakout season and took home the James Norris Memorial trophy.

Carey Price swept the goalie awards, while Pavel Datsyk won the Selke as the best defensive forward. Johan Franzen took home the Conn Smythe as playoff MVP.

In the most hyped showdown in Calder trophy history, Eichel beat McDavid to win the Calder. Eichel had 15 goals and 63 points in his rookie year as an 18 year old with the Sabres. McDavid trailed Eichel with 59 points, but there were those who thought McDavid's 18 goals should have given him the edge over Eichel. McDavid and Eichel both played north of 1400 minutes. Eichel had a significantly better +/-, but McDavid was playing on an awful Edmonton team and also showed great two way play as he had a significantly higher take away/give away ratio than Eichel.

NHL ENTRY DRAFT

b9EGUzT.jpg

CANUCKS MISS OUT ON STRAND
At the beginning of the season, it was heavily rumoured that Vancouver had their eye on Austin Strand. Strand's draft stock went up and down throughout the season, and at one point it looked like he might be around in the mid teens. Ultimately, Strand ended up out of Vancouver's reach as a top 10 pick. Had Strand been around in the teens, the Canucks felt they had the assets to trade up from 28. Rumour has it, the Canucks had Strand ranked #1 on their internal list and would have loved to get him. Strand was drafted by NJ with the 7th pick of the draft.

CHILDISH FIRST ROUND PICK FOR VANCOUVER
Unimpressed with the crop of defenders available late in the first round, and desperately needing a high end goalie prospect, the Canucks ultimately took the last 1st round calibre goalie available at #28, Travis Child. The Canucks would not pick again until the end of the fourth round. Child was expected to be taken in the late first round, so this wasn't a reach by the Canucks. Still, it was a huge surprise to see them pass on taking a defender.
____________________

PLAYERS TAKEN BY THE CANUCKS
28th, the Canuck select Travis Child G 4* 51OA 18yo
(Child is a work in progress. He's likely five or six years away from the NHL, and Canucks fans shouldn't mistake him for being a can't miss future stud in net. If the Canucks get a league average starting goalie out of Child who is ready to step in when Miller and Markstrom are no longer with the team, they've made a good pick.)

118th, the Canucks select Trent Fox C LH TWF 3.5* 53oa 18yo
(Fox is a solid TWF with a big frame and good skating for his draft position. His ceiling is as a third line centre and only time will tell how the CHLer pans out.)

140th, the Canucks select Connor Schlichting LDFD 3.5* 56oa 18yo
Schlichting's a big stay at home defender. At 6'4" 208 lbs, he is a man amongst boys in the CHL. Schlichting projects to be a scary bottom pairing defender who could be great on PKs. He's very mobile for a defender of his size, and has a good shot.

148th, the Canucks select Patrice Demuy C RH TWF 3.5 56oa 18yo
In Demuy, the Canucks select another two way centre who could find a spot in their bottom six. Demuy is tall, but has a lanky frame, similar to a Kyle Turris. He's got good hands for his draft position, and is expected to veer more to the offensive side of the game as a TWF.

178th, the Canucks select Daniel Kranzelok LTWD 3.5R* 53oa 18yo
Krenzelok is a Czech defender playing in the CHL. Similar to Demuy, Krenzelok is a tall player with a lanky build who could up his value for the Canucks if he were to bulk up. Krenzelok is a very raw player. The Canucks should know what they have after he spends a few more years in the CHL.

DRAFT SUMMARY
The Canucks nabbed multiple players who are hard to project long term, but have the potential to become roster players in the future. With only one pick in the first three rounds, they missed out on a deep draft, and a chance to nab possible top level talent all the way through the first 90 picks. Many fans are furious to see their team throw around draft picks in such a liberal manner in trades.

Most draft picks in the later rounds are so raw, that it'll be impossible for the Canucks to know what kind of players they have until a few years down the line.

Travis Child could be a star for the Canucks, but he has a long ways to go. Taking a goalie in the first round is a very risky move, and with only one pick in the first three rounds the Canucks have placed a tremendous amount of pressure on Child. If Child busts, the Canucks will likely walk out of this draft with no top level players.

Doing a Carolina GM on NHL 15 and made about 95% of the roster changes. Realistic top scorers, Chicago still won the Cup, Crosby and Kessel were 1-2 in league scoring and the only players with 100+ points (Crosby - 104, Kessel - 100).

As for me... I completely tanked with Carolina and traded Ward, the Staals, Versteeg, etc. to stockpile picks. I ended up drafting McDavid, Eichel, Hanifin and Provorov. At least I have my new core.

Skinner also had 45 of the team's 173 goals.

Hi all, long time lurker, first time poster. I've always liked reading these dynasty stories here and other places and I thought I might want to contribute. I've been an Flames fan for as long as I can remember and I love playing virtual puck, GM mode in particular. I've played every NHL game since NHL hockey on the PC, though I took a 3-4 year break when 2k was at their peak. The advent of the skill stick really won me back in addition to 2k killing their franchise. I have found the GM mode a little stale lately (though 16 is twice the game 15 was) but I'm still feeling back into it after not playing much last year. The biggest thing that got me back into it was reading some of the awesome stories on this site, some of them are just fantastic.

I might have something later tonight or tomorrow but it will be a Flames Franchise for sure. FYI I'll have a few "trading rules" I follow as to try to keep the cheesing from getting too crazy. Generally if a trade's there, I'll take it (unless it violates a rule) if it's to my benefit, I won't get too caught up in the realism (as I get into later). The rules are more there to keep the game balanced and a little more challenging.

My general trading rules are:

1) Only trade for draft picks, unsigned RFAs and pending UFAs (I will not re-trade a pending UFA). I'm going to be building my team through the draft/FA for the most part, as I find that more rewarding. For that reason I restrict myself so I don't get drunk one night and trade for Stamkos.

2) No three way trades. No trading an asset I traded for until the next draft. You can turn a crappy player into a great player if you constantly trade your returns and involve 3+ teams. I won't do this.

3) No trading my own draft picks that are more than 3 drafts away IE) At the outset, it is 2015, after the draft, so I will only trade 2016, 2017, 2018 draft picks even though 2019 and 2020 are available. In real life picks that far away aren't traded as it's too far off so I will stay away from that. If I don't do this I find I perpetually have no picks in furthest away 2-3 drafts while the 2 upcoming have 15+ picks. I use the most recent Chris Stewart trade as a guide here. If the Sabres are okay with a 2017 2nd in 2015 (before the draft) then I figure that's a good standard to hold myself to.

4) Try not to get to hung up on the how the real world players stack up against their virtual counterparts. I'm going to do a trade if the CPU allows it, I'm not going to get caught up in whether or not it would happen in real life. For instance, one of my favorite players to trade away is Markus Granlund. I like the kid but he's too small to play C and I don't need a 3rd line playmaking winger when I've already got Gaudreau. I can usually get a 1st or sometimes a 1st+3rd for him and I will seek that trade out, I don't care if it's realistic or not. The players in the game are so different and differently valued than they are in real life so it makes no sense to try to 'keep it realistic'. Fast forward 10 seasons and it is just stupid.

EDIT: added the following:

Simming rules: I should describe how I will be playing this as it won't be a 100% sim. Any game, I don't care if it's game 1/82 or game 7 of the SCF, will be played (intervened) by me, only under the following conditions: Calgary is trailing by 1 or tied going into the 3rd period OR the game is going to overtime. Any other scenario and I will sim through. I find this the best way to balance simming and playing, I have been playing this way since EA started letting you intervene in the middle of simming a game (@#$% you NHL15).

Editing Players: You may notice I have edited several players attributes. I do this because I view the real life players as being better/have more potential than in the game and I don't want some of my favorite prospects destined to be garbage "just because". Only Calgary players and prospects have been edited because to do otherwise would be too time consuming.. Take into account that when you start a be a gm in nhl 16 it changes some 'potentials' of players randomly. For instance, I edited Ferland to a top 9 yellow from a bottom 6, when the game loaded up, Ferland was a top 6 yellow. This happened with Hamilton as well. I didn't edit his potential but it still went from Elite to Franchise.

Ratings changes (from > to):

Giordano 89 OVR > 91 OVR
Byron 76 OVR > 79 OVR
Andersson ahl pot > top 4
Brodie top 4 > elite
Monahan and Bennett yellow potential > green potential
Gaudreau red potential > yellow potential
Hamilton elite > franchise (cpu did this)
Ferland top 9 > top 6 (cpu did this)
Wotherspoon top 4 > top 6 (cpu did this)
Mangiapane ahl green > top 9 red
Hiller starter > fringe starter (cpu did this)

Several player types were changed to the following as well:

Monahan SNP, Ferland PWF, Gaudreau PLY, Jones PWF, Brodie TWD, Russell OFD, Smith PWF

There may have been a couple others I didn't notice or forgot about

I Hope someone wants to read this, if not I guess I'm doing it for myself lol.

BLOCKBUSTER DEAL: VANCOUVER ACQUIRE RFA ALEX GALCHENYUK FROM CAP CRUNCHED MONTREAL CANADIENS
Getting Patrick Kane at a heavily discounted rate didn't come without its headaches. With multiple high price extensions kicking in, Montreal found themselves in cap hell with negative cap space after July 1st and star RFA Alex Gelchnyuk unsigned.

As a result, Galchenyuk was left open to offer sheets.

With Galchenyuk open to offer sheets, the Canadiens worked around the clock in an attempt to deal the coveted young player before he could sign an offer sheet with another team. The big problem with trading him was, the team taking him would have to be able to help solve their cap crisis in the process.

Meaning, they needed to clear significant space, and the team taking Galchenyuk needed to have enough room to not only meet Galchenyuk's contract demands, but also take cap dumps from Montreal.

Galchenyuk was rumoured to be asking in the range of 3.5 million on a multi year deal, a reasonable amount.....meaning if the Canadiens failed to trade him prior to an offer sheet coming in, they'd risk only getting a second round draft pick for a player who was previously taken 3rd overall.

With limited options, the Canadiens accepted a massive package of picks and prospects from the Vancouver Canucks. The Canadiens received two players who were recently selected in the first round of the draft in Gaunce and McCann. They also received Frank Corrado, who is a cheap NHL ready top 6 defender. To top it off they were able to dump the final year of Tom Gilbert's contract and receive a 2nd and 3rd pick in the 2018 draft.

Galchenyuk hasn't quite panned out as expected for Montreal, but he gives the Canucks a true playmaking centre who can help them win now, but also potentially take over on the first line when the Sedins eventually retire.

They gave up a massive package, but Galchenyuk's upside justifies it. The Canadiens were desperate, and with multiple teams arming their fax machines to send offer sheets, time was limited, and they weren't going to get a deeper offer in such a complicated scenario.

Shortly after the trade, it was announced that third line grinder Brandon Prust who is on the final year of a 2.5M contract was dealt by Vancouver to Toronto for a 4th and a 5th round pick. This was no doubt a cap clearing move to prepare for Galchenyuk's extension.

Galchenyuk who had 46 points last season was then signed to a three year 3.5M extension. He'll still be an RFA when it expires.

VANCOUVER RECIEVES
-Alex Galchenyuk (21yo 85oa C PLY 4* RFA)
-Tom Gilbert (32yo 82oa RDFD 1 YL @ 2.5M UFA)

MONTREAL RECEIVES
-2018 2nd Round Pick
-2018 3rd Round Pick
-Jared McCann (19yo 73oa 4* TWF C)
-Brendan Gaunce (21yo 77oa 3.5* TWF LW)
-Frank Corrado (22yo 81oa 3.5* R TWD)

TSN TRADE CENTRE ANALYSIS
This is a similar move for Vancouver to last year's Ellis trade. They've found a highly touted young player who can help their team now while the Sedins are around, but also has long term upside to carry the team into the future when the Canuck's older players leave or retire.

Like the Ellis trade, Galchenyuk did not come cheap. Giving up Corrado is probably the biggest blow to the Canucks as they are razor thin when it comes to defensive depth at an organizational level. Corrado gives Montreal an NHL ready defender on a cheap ELC deal.

With McCann and Gaunce they dealt from a position of strength as they have multiple young forward prospects gunning for roster spots over the next few seasons.

What is concerning is that the Canucks further obliterated their draft pick pool, and are potentially setting their team up for a toxic scenario a few years down the line when multiple older players retire, and they don't have high end prospects to replace them because they haven't been drafting enough in the top rounds.

Montreal didn't make their team better, but they got a bunch of B's for an A in a situation where they were against the clock and if they didn't make a deal, they'd get screwed. The Patrick Kane acquisition has really put Montreal up against the cap, and with them failing to win the Stanley Cup last year as heavy favourites, only time will tell if it was actually the right move for them.

If Galchenyuk is only a good 50 point 2C as he showed last season, with two former first round picks, and multiple draft picks coming their way, Montreal might even end up "winning" the trade based on long term value, but the Canucks are likely hoping he blossoms into a first line centre worthy of his former draft position.
____________________

MINOR TRADE: Vancouver acquires from the Calgary Flames Kris Russel (81oa LOFD 1 year left than UFA) in exchange for Tom Gilbert (82oa RDFD).
Tom Gilbert was forced on the Canucks as a cap dump by Montreal. With Greg Patteryn already filling up their bottom pair on the right side, the Canucks filled a need by swapping Gilbert for Russel with the Flames. Both teams end up with slightly overpaid UFA defenders who fill different needs.

As you guessed, Montreal put themselves into a bad spot cap-wise.
Way to take advantage, but still give good value...
Galch may be the 2nd line centre missing from the Canucks since that whiner Kesler abandoned ship!

Yeah, I could have just offer sheeted him and got him for less assets, but that wouldn't be as fun. Not that everything in my GM logs is ultra realistic, but if that scenario happened in real life, they would have traded him for the best package before taking an offer sheet like what happened with Dougie Hamilton. So I thought that was the more fun way to go about it.

Kesler and the Ducks just knocked us out of the playoffs. Maybe we'll get our revenge next season.

cannot wait to see how you handle the morale system! :yo:
since players actually request trades if it comes to that.

Yeah, the morale system could be pretty cool. Next gen GM mode would definitely be a big learning curve for me and change the way I do my logs.

I'm not too into picking up a next gen console just for NHL, as I was late picking up a PS3, so I'm still getting through all the big last gen titles and getting a lot of non-NHL use out of my PS3.

If they do a great job with GM mode in 17, I might be tempted to pick one up though. For the next year though, NHL 15 on the PS3 is the game for me.

I was the same man. I just picked up a PS4 this year. Bought Destiny. it came with NHL 15:)laugh: ) it has been well worth it for me.
With NBA2K16 coming out this week and with Battlefront 3 in November a lot of great titles to look forward too!

But I totally understand the wanting to wait. To be honest GM mode is still lacking in areas like no ability to hire our staff. I miss the days where we could manually choose what our prospects trained in to boost their play.
