Training Camp 2k16

The Red Wings head into camp after another short summer. It hasn't even a quiet summer and the revamped Wings will look to hit the ground running and try to finally win the Stanley cup that has so narrowly eluded them these past 2 years.

The most interesting story lines to follow at camp are those of Connor Garland and Dante Giroux, the Red Wings most promising prospects.

Giroux was a controversial pick a year ago but he has turned things around, he is coming off an amazing season where he was CHL player of the year and where he led the Blainville Boisbriand Armada to their first Memorial Cup.

Garland is turning pro after capping off his junior career with Q championship (Moncton beat Blainvile in 7 games, Garland scored the OT winner) and he led USA to WJC gold.

Both will look to crack the Wings roster on opening night.

Other story lines to follow are those of Jaromir Jagr, Pavel Datsyuk and Johan Franzen.

Jagr has publicly stated that this will be his last kick at the can, at 45 years of age and an absolutely stellar career no one can blame him, but he has once goal he wants to achieve first. Win one last Stanley cup.

Longtime Wing Pavel Datsyuk has hinted at returning home to Russia, with an expiring contract, and no talks of an extension, this could be the end.

Injuries have contributed to the decline of Johan Franzen's production, the Mule, as he's called has stated that he will likely return home to Sweden when his contract ends this summer.

There will be an influx of youth in the coming years, we've seen youngsters Petr Mrazek, Xavier Ouellet, Riley Sheahan and Tomas Jurco all crack the roster in the past 2 seasons. This year Anthony Mantha and Kevin Gravel will look to follow in their footsteps and join the next generation of Detroit Red Wings hockey players.

2 promising prospects who will surely join them soon are Giroux and Garland, and on the back end Oscar Steen and Luke Green are promising D prospects.

"Wings have signed #Garland #Giroux to ELC's. Told Giroux has been informed that he will be sent back to the Q" @RealRayFerraro

"Wings brass think #Giroux is still immature both physically and mentally. Says he's made strides but not ready to be a pro. Pleased by his progress" @RealRayFerraro

"Giroux took it well, says he knows he needs to get stronger. Hopes to play for Canadian WJC team" @RealRayFerraro

After a wild off-season, the Boston Bruins had a mildly successful regular season, finishing at 41-34-7 with 89 points, less than last year, but good enough to squeak into the 8th spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

The Bruins, sitting in 10th place at the deadline, decided to stay the course and didn’t sell or trade assets for a rental, and their patience was paid off. Led by the goaltender Tuukka Rask, Boston finished strong down the stretch, holding off the Toronto Maple Leafs to get into the last playoff spot.

Unfortunately, the Ottawa Senators, who were quite busy at the deadline, acquiring center Joe Thornton and winger Jaromir Jagr, ended the Bruins run in five games in the first round.

Ottawa would go on to win the Stanley Cup, beating the Los Angeles Kings in 6 games, giving Thornton, and the city of Ottawa, their first championship.

Next up, a new start as Captain Zdeno Chara hangs up his skates…

____________________

GAME 1
Henrik Sedin scores in the first to put Vancouver up. Despite Vancouver out shooting San Jose 24-12, they are able to tie the game in the second. San Jose dominates the offense from that point forward and catches up in shots. After a few tense moments killing off a powerplay in the third Vancouver holds on to bring the game to OT. We see a different Vancouver team in OT as they dominate the offensive end of the game. Sutter ultimately scores the winning goal as Vancouver take game 1 outshooting San Jose 41-26.
____________________

GAME 2
In their second game at home, Vancouver has an opportunity to take a 2-0 series lead. The Canucks once again dominate offensively, out shooting the Sharks 24-9 by the end of the second period. Jones proves himself, only allowing a single goal by Daniel “the serious one” Sedin. In a putrid display of offense, the Sharks only muster 6 shots in the third period while their goalie stands on his head and keeps them in the game all the way up to the Canuck's 34th shot. Canucks win 1-0 and take a 2-0 series lead as we head to San Jose.
____________________

**BREAKING NEWS: DAN HAMHUIS INJURED. POTENTIALLY OUT FOR GAMES 3, 4, and 5.**
Weber will dress on the bottom pairing. In a move out of left-field, left OFD Kris Russel will move to the top pairing to play with Seabrook while LD Edler and ROFD Ellis will stay on the second pairing.
____________________

GAME 3
This game will give Vancouver fans a preview of what they can expect out of their squad if Hamhuis walks in the summer. Can the team still manage to win without their franchise defender leading the way? For the first time in the series San Jose takes the lead with an early goal from Wingels. A Pavelski goal in the second period puts San Jose up 2-0 and for the first time in the series they are drastically outshooting Vancouver. After being down 2-0, Henrik Sedin was rumoured to have given a speech that rivalled Al Pacino's from Any Given Sunday.....the only problem? It was in Swedish. Luckily for the Canuck's, Sven Baertschi had picked up some Swedish playing on a line with a Sedin, and started the third period with two straight goals to tie the game. The Canucks then took over the game, out shooting the Sharks, but once again Martin Jones stood on his head and with a late Brent Burn goal helped keep the Sharks from going down 3-0 in the series. Sharks win 3-2 to bring the series within one game.
____________________

GAME 4
Vancouver's OFDs deliver early with Ellis and Russel scoring in the first five minutes of the game. The Sharks come within one, but Baerstchi continues his hot streak and puts Vancouver up 3-1 at the end of the first. The Canucks and Sharks trade goals in the second to bring the game to 4-2 and from there both teams go all out offensively. Even without Hamhuis, Vancouver is able to hold off the Sharks and win the game to take a 3-1 series lead.
____________________

GAME 5
The Sharks are backed up against a wall, and face elimination. Bo Horvat scores early to put the Canucks up. Canucks young guns deliver and by the end of the second period, the Canucks are up 3-0 with goals by Horvat, Galchenyuk, and Baertschi. After spending the majority of the game sleeping, and being out shoot 2:1, the Sharks show up for the third and score two quick goals. In a dramatic finish, the Sharks pelt the net with shots, they pull their goalie, but Ryan Miller stops everything sent his way and helps lead the Canucks to a game 5 victory to clinch the series.

ROUND 2 VS THE ANAHEIM DUCKS (47-30-5)
____________________

In a rematch from last year's conference final, the Canucks look to get revenge and dispose of the Ducks.

BREAKING NEWS: Ryan Miller left practice early. The Canucks have been tight lipped regarding the situation, could he be injured?
____________________

GAME 1
As the game starts, concerned Vancouver fans notice Ryan Miller donning a Canuck's cap while warming the bench. Jacob Markstrom is in net to start the game. Vancouver fans have a right to be concerned as Jacob Markstrom only managed an .880 save percentage in 19 games during the regular season compared to Ryan Miller's .919 over 69 games. If Markstrom is going to make a claim to be Vancouver's future starter, now is the time for him to do it.

Baertschi scores on the first shot of the game and continues his hot streak as Vancouver's top goal scorer in the playoffs. Galchenyk adds a goal, and Markstrom stops 10 shots for a perfect first period.

Markstrom plays a very average game, allowing 3 goals over 31 shots for a .903 save percentage. This would typically be a cause for concern, but because Vancouver managed to put NINE GOALS ON THE BOARD for a 9-3 win.....it was a non-issue. Daniel Sedin, Dan Hamhuis, and Steve Downie all had 3 points each.
____________________

GAME 2
Canuck's fans are relieved to find out that Ryan Miller will be starting this game. After a surprising blowout in Anaheim, the Ducks and Canucks go head to head once again. In the complete opposite of game 1, the game remains tied 0-0 until mid way through the second when the Ducks score the first goal. Anaheim add two more before the third, and all of a sudden, we have a new series on our hands. With a 34 shot shutout, John Gibson quiets any talk that he might not be ready to lead the Ducks in the playoffs. Ducks win 3-0 and tie the series 1-1.
____________________

GAME 3
Bottom pairing defender Kris Russel isn't dressed for the game and has been replaced by Yanick Weber. Back in Vancouver the Canucks look to retake the momentum in the series. Henrik Sedin leads his team, scoring early in the game but the Ducks take the lead in the second period with goals by Sekac and Kesler. Kesler gives the Ducks a 3-1 lead in the third but the Canucks fight back and with goals by Downie, that other Sedin, and Galchenyuk, despite being outshot 39-26, the Canucks take a late 4-3 lead and win the game. The Canucks lead the series 2-1.
____________________

VANCOUVER SUN ARTICLE: Canucks Acquisitions Paying Off
An article appears in the Vancouver Sun outlining the playoff success of Danielpalfredsson's acquisitions since taking over the Canucks. In a huge surprise, Steve Downie has been possessed by the soul of Claude Lemieux and is a few points away from leading the team. He also has the second most hits amongst forwards. Seabrook doesn't lead the team in points, but as a DFD he has the best plus minus and the most hits on the entire team. Off-season blockbuster acquisition Alex Galchenyuk has 3 goals and 9 points in 8 playoff games to lead the team.
____________________

GAME 4
The Canucks could make things very easy on themselves by winning this game and making the Ducks face elimination. The Ducks come out swinging and end the first period with a 3-0 lead. After another motivational Swedish speech, the Canucks fight back in the second and with three straight goals tie the game. In the third period goals by Sekac and Fowler give Anaheim a 5-3 lead. The lead sticks, and the series is now tied two games a piece.
____________________

BREAKING NEWS: BRENT SEABROOK INJURED, POTENTIALLY OUT FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE POST SEASON
____________________

GAME 5
In a shocking development, Jacob Markstrom looks to be in net to start the game. Despite the series being tied, Miller is 1-2 in the series and has allowed 12 goals in three games. He finished last game with an .880 save percentage. Is this move far too desperate for a series that is tied 2 games a piece?

Hamhuis and Downie both put Vancouver on the board early in the first. Markstrom allows 1 goal on 9 shots in the first period.

With a series of power plays, Vancouver take a 4-1 lead in the second period. Markstrom seizes his opportunity, and blanks Anaheim for two straight periods leading Vancouver to a 5-1 win. Markstrom gets the first star of the night with a .970 save percentage and 33 shots against.
____________________

MARKSTROM TO START A CRITICAL GAME 6
After a brilliant game 5 performance, Jacob Markstrom will start game 6. Ryan Miller, Jacob Markstrom, and all those involved are saying the right things, Ryan Miller commented “He played a great game, and I'm happy that we won” when interviewed. Still, those in Vancouver's pesky hockey media can't help but play up the goalie controversy angle, commenting that Miller looked dismayed, and suggesting that despite being one of the best goalies in the NHL over the last two seasons, he's too old to hold up over a full season and a long playoffs.
____________________

GAME 6
Vancouver attempt to take the series at home. The team has a strong first period, heavily outshooting Vancouver as a Hansen goal puts them up 1-0. Anaheim finally crack Markstrom after three periods of being shut out to tie the game, but another goal from an unlikely source in Pateryn puts Vancouver up 2-1.

In the third period, Anaheim score three straight to take a 4-2 lead. With 36 shots on goal, Markstrom is handed his first playoff loss with a .889 save percentage. The Ducks have a goalie controversy of their own as Frederik Andersen started the game and had a phenomenal .946 performance.
____________________

UPDATE: BRENT SEABROOK POTENTIALLY BACK IN TIME FOR CONFERENCE FINAL

Miller VS Markstrom: WHO WILL START GAME 7?
The bloom might already be off the rose with Markstrom who was handed his first loss. Despite this, he still has a .923 save percentage but that is over only 3 and a half games.

Ryan Miller has a .917 save percentage, but it is vastly inflated by his stats from the opening round against San Jose. He's yet to have a good game against Anaheim, and also was unremarkable last year in the conference final. Markstrom has won two games against Anaheim out of the three that Vancouver have won this series.

It is a no-win choice, because no matter what happens, a vocal part of the fan base will state that is the wrong choice. Who will start game 7?
____________________

GAME 7
Miller looks to be starting. If he loses, could this be his last game as a Canuck?

In what is shaping up to be a goalie battle, both teams are unable to score until half way through the second when Getzlaf puts Anaheim up 1-0.

The shots are 35-28 Anaheim, Miller is having a brilliant game after standing on his head to help kill multiple third period Anaheim powerplays. There are three minutes left, and Vancouver needs a hero to tie the game as Anaheim is still up 1-0.

With two minutes to go, Perry takes a cheap shot on Hamhuis taking his knee out from behind. Sutter drops the gloves and defends his team mate. Perry and Sutter go off, and Vancouver goes on a powerplay as they desperately need a goal.

Seconds into the powerplay, Henrik Sedin gets called for a controversial slash and as a result the remaining time will be 4 on 4 with both team's missing two of their best players.

With 17 seconds to go, Vancouver have an offensive zone faceoff and pull their goalie. Getzlaf wins the faceoff, carries the puck out of the zone, and ices the game with an empty net goal.

In a tight game that saw Miller step up with a .973 save percentage, the Canucks were unable to beat a red hot Frederik Andersen and as a result are once again eliminated by their new biggest rival....the Anaheim Ducks.

OFF SEASON PREVIEW: KEY STORYLINES

Aquilini_Francesco.jpg

GM DANIELPALFREDSSON NEEDS TO WIN
Next season, GM Danielpalfredsson will be in the final year of his initial three year virtual GM contract with the Vancouver Canucks. If he fails to meet owner Francesco Aquilini's expectations, he could find himself applying to manage his local Kia dealership.

With the Canucks retirement a possibility, and multiple key players on expiring UFA deals who have yet to announce whether or not they intend to test the market (Seabrook, Hamhuis, Downie), Danielpalfredsson is set to have his work cut out for him this off season.

He cannot go into a rebuild if everybody retires, because the owner wants a winning season. He'll have to work the trade market and find a way to win.

8467876.jpg

SEDINS NEARING RETIREMENT
For a second season in a row, the Sedins came close to winning their cup but the Canucks lost to rival Ryan Kesler and the Anaheim Ducks in a heart breaking game 7 defeat. Could this be the year where the Sedins retire, and thus force the Canucks into a rebuild?

8469465.jpg

CAN DANIELPALFREDSSON KEEP THE CANUCKS DEFENSE IN TACT?
Danielpalfredsson will have his work cut out for him in a huge off season where franchise defender Dan Hamhuis and free agent acquisition Brent Seabrook will both be UFAs, and both could potentially walk.

Blackberry-final.jpg

MULTIPLE TEAMS CALLING ABOUT RYAN MILLER AND JACOB MARKSTROM
There is a goalie controversy brewing in Vancouver. Ryan Miller is considered to be an elite top goalie in the league, but he is also on the final year of his deal and in his mid 30's. Jacob Markstrom has goalie of the future potential, but he only has a single year left on his deal prior to becoming a UFA, and aside from a good showing in a few games during the playoffs hasn't proved to the Canucks that he can carry the load as a starting goalie.

With the draft coming up, could one of these goalies be dealt to another team?

Can anyone tell me if they tried Jacob De La Rose, Michael McCarron and Nikita Scherbak?

I'd like to know if I should keep them or trade them.

Might do something different... Or I'll do a big market team, or a southern one.

Suggestions guys ?

Maybe do like an all american/canadian/sweden team? Like have montreal team canada, keeping only canadian lpayers or something? Could try it as a Fantasy draft and only draft players from One specific country?

Possibly create some legends? Like toronto have gilmour, can with linden, adding dennis savard, karia, sleanni etc...?

These arnt even that good, but just ideas

NHL AWARD SHOW
The Pittsburgh Penguins were presented their Presidents Trophy, while star winger Phil Kessel took home the Hart Memorial award.

Pekka Rinne overtook Carey Price as the best NHL goalie by winning the Jennings and Vezina awards.

New Jersey Devils 2011 fourth round pick Reid Boucher put up 23 goals and 54 points in his rookie season which was good enough to win him the Calder trophy as rookie of the year.

For the second year in a row, the Norris trophy had a surprising winner. The James Neal trade finally paid off for the Dallas Stars as Alex Goligoski took hom his first Norris Trophy.

Stamkos ended Crosby's two year streak as the NHL's leading scorer, and Pavel Datsyk won the Selke for the second year in a row.

NHL ENTRY DRAFT

LOCAL BOY AUSTON MATTEWS TAKEN 1st OVERALL BY ARIZONA
Arizona passed on the very enticing 6'6†centre Logan Brown to take hometown boy Auston Matthews. Matthews is seen as a player the Coyotes can build around and has been compared to picks such as Stamkos, Tavares, and Eichel for his ability to help turn a franchise around.

Washington were happy to select the massive power forward Logan Brown second. Brown has been compared to Eric Lindros for his size and skill, and some argue had Matthews not been highly marketable to the Coyotes as a local boy, Brown might have gone first.

Jarratt to Florida, Kryski to Winnipeg, and Herringer to Toronto round out the top 5.

bettman.jpg

“I HAVE A TRADE TO ANNOUNCEâ€-Gary Bettman
After acquiring Ryan Miller's ten team no trade list, the Canucks have worked out a deal with the Flyers who just barely missed the playoffs last season.

The Canucks send Ryan Miller who has a year left on his deal, 2015 drafted centre Trent Fox, and LW sniper Chris Higgins to the Flyers for backup goalie Michal Neuvirth and the 13th overall pick in the draft.

Without a true starting goalie, the Flyers missed the playoffs by a few points. Miller who over the last two years has taken his game back to an elite level provides the Flyers with a short term solution to get them back into the playoffs.

Higgins had a down year after being passed on the depth chart by Baertschi, but previously in 2015 he scored 20 goals. With the Flyers lack of depth on the left side, Higgins improves their team going into next season.

Trading Miller is a huge risk for the Canucks, but they need high end defensive prospects, and with only a single year remaining on his deal and Markstrom playing well enough in the playoffs, he was the most logical trade piece they had.

CANUCKS 2016 DRAFT SUMMARY

13th overall the Canucks select out of the Brandon Wheat Kings LOFD Ryan Lindgren (18yo, 4* 57oa)
Lindgren is a big fast offensive defender who is a few years away from making the NHL. Lindgren is the perfect piece for Vancouver who'll need a talented offensive mind on the left side of their power play in a few years when Edler begins to slow down.

98th overall the Canucks select out of Mississauga LTWD Sean Day (18yo 59oa, 4.5R*)
Similar to Kylington in 2015, Sean Day is a player who was once ranked near the top of the draft but fell to the later rounds as a result of multiple red flags. There were much safer picks in the fourth round, but none with the ceiling that Day has. With Vancouver's lack of elite defensive prospects, if Day booms, he could kick start the next era of the team's back end in a few years when Seabrook and Edler are gone.

170th the Canucks select out of Chicoutimi LOFD Frederic Allard LOFD 18yo 55oa 3.5R*
There must have been something appealing about Allard because Vancouver went off the board to make sure they got him. At 6'1†and only 164 lbs, Allard arguably would have gone higher in the draft if teams weren't turned off by his lack of size. Allard was expected to go late in the 7th round, but maybe the Canucks caught wind that someone else had their eyes on him. If Allard can make the transition to pro, his might peak as a bottom pairing defender who can quarterback the Canuck's second powerplay unit.

184th the Canucks select out of Ottawa RD Justin Bean 20yo (68oa 3.5R*)
Bean is another tall lanky offensive minded defender. Some Canucks writers are raving about this pick, and how Bean has skating that would be elite at an NHL level, and hockey senses that are off the chart for his age. (4.5 skating/90 speed/80 offensive awareness). Expect Bean to dress in the AHL this season and get some reps on the power play. If he puts on some size and solves his physical issues, he could contend for a spot on Vancouver sooner rather than later.

200th the Canucks select out of Sarnia LD Franco Sproviero 18yo (56oa 3*)
Sproviero is a long term project who at best will be a 6th or 7th defender in the NHL.

HAMHUIS TO TEST FREE AGENCY; SEABROOK SIGNS MASSIVE 7 YEAR 5.675 EXTENSION
In the biggest news of the year, Dan Hamhuis refused to discuss an extension with the Canucks and instead will be testing the market. Hamhuis will likely be looking for a long term deal in the 6 million range on the open market. To make matter worse, Vancouver's thin defensive core took another hit as Kris Russel will also test the market.

Seabrook agreed to extend with the Canucks, and the team quickly organized a press conference with the 32 year old to announce his big long term extension.

Seabrook's value to the Canucks skyrocketed the moment Hamhuis chose to test the market. Despite being almost 32 years old, Seabrook tied the Canuck's hands by demanding a 7 year deal. Right now, Seabrook is an elite top 2 defender, but how long he can keep up his play is anybody's guess. If Seabrooke begins to regress as most players do into their 30's, his contract could look very bad.

To top it of, Seabrook has a full NTC. Meaning, he'll retire as a Canuck.

Both 20 goal scorer Steve Downie (3x2.77) and 37 goal scorer Radim Vrbata (2x3.75) signed short term cap friendly deals with the Canucks in order to help them get over the hump and win a cup.

Brandon Sutter's five year 4.35M extension has kicked in.

Biggest of all, Vancouver went all in on Sven Baertschi. After one season where he scored 22 goals on Sedin's wing, Vancouver signed Baertschi to a 7 year 3M per deal. The deal is back loaded, so Baertschi will make 5M on the final year of his deal. The cap hit will be phenomenal if Baertschi develops into an elite goal scorer, but the contract poses a tremendous risk for Vancouver. Multiple players have had good single seasons while playing with players worse than Sedin.

The Canucks will have just over 14 million to spend on the open market, but with possibly Markstrom, Neuvirth, and Horvat looking for raises next season and no money coming off the books, it might be wise for them to limit their spending to under 10 million.
____________________

MARKSTROM AND NEUVIRTH WANT TO BE VANCOUVER'S LONG TERM DUO IN NET
Both Markstrom and Neuvirth are a month away from battling each other in training camp for Vancouver's vacant starting goalie spot. Both players have said they are fine with the situation, and word out of Vancouver has it that both UFAs have let it be known that they are willing to sign extensions and stay with Vancouver long term. Markstrom is coming off of a shaky season where he showed his potential elite upside while relieving Ryan Miller in the playoffs. Neuvirth had a very strong off season, and word out of Vancouver has it that he could contend for the starting job.

The Boston Bruins start the 2016 off-season losing their team captain as Zdeno Chara announced his retirement today after 18 NHL seasons. The 38 year old former Norris trophy winner decided to hang up the skates after battling through two injury filled seasons.
The Bruins will now have a void to fill on the back-end, as well as picking a new captain.
The team does have some good news to look forward to; with the San Jose Sharks finishing at the bottom of the Pacific division, the B's will have the 5th overall pick in the NHL draft, in addition to their own pick at 15.
Rumors are flying that the team has been in discussion with both Nashville and Winnipeg, likely looking for a defenseman via trade.

Seismic Shakeup in San Jose
san-jose-sharks-default-141.jpg

This just in, we've recieved word that the San Jose Sharks cleaned house this morning. The first person getting the axe, GM Doug Wilson. Ownership has had it with Wilson and is planning on a full scale rebuild of the underachieving franchise.

Surprisingly, ownership has turned to a familiar face to lead the rebuilding of the team.
Who ? Legendary Sharks Goalie Evegeni Nabokov will lead rebuild.

Nabokov announced that Owen Nolan will be the teams new coach.

It's rumoured that Thornton and Marleau will be pushed out the door almost immediately, and that many many changes are coming San Jose's way. Some people thought a retool would occur, but this does not seem to be the case.

We've also heard that Couture, Pavelski, Herlt, Burns, Vlasic and Niemi will be moved for the right price.

For FSN, I'm Todd Brown.

danielpalfredsson, just wanna say that I love reading these. keep it up.

Who got Chychrun btw?

I'd have to look next time I load up NHL. I only really throw it in once very week or two and play a season or two of GM mode.

I usually don't go through the entire draft/everything that happens with every team since it would take forever, but I'm a few years ahead right now, so maybe I'll do a run down of the top players in the league at each position every few years so you guys can see who was drafted where and who panned out.

Hey guys. This is my first time posting on this forum. I've followed it for a long time, and just around to making an account. Just got NHL 16 last weekend, and it's a huge improvement over NHL 15 (Xbox 1). I have noticed the thread has been getting a little stale lately, so I was going to start up a new GM series that I would post on here. I don't know which team to do, so if you guys could suggest some, that would be great. I was thinking it would be fun to do:

Columbus
Colorado
Calgary

But I am totally open to doing a different team. I'm kinda looking for a team that isn't a rebuilding team, but isn't a necessarily Stanley Cup contender either. A team looking to contend, but could add or subtract some parts. Thanks guys.

I was actually going to start a Colorado GM mode today/tomorrow, I'd love to see a Columbus GM mode with all those awesome prospects evolve!

I don't do write-ups much at all anymore but here's my 2017-2018 Carolina Hurricanes.

Jamie Benn (91) / Connor McDavid (90) / Jack Eichel (87)
Jeff Skinner (87) / Elias Lindholm (85) / Carl Hagelin (85)
Victor Rask (79) / Brian Boyle (83) / Andrew Cogliano (84)
Mike Hoffman (78) / Ryan White (80) / Dwight King (82)
Brock McGinn (78)

Keith Yandle (87) / Justin Faulk (86)
Noah Hanifin (85) / Ryan Murphy (81)
Ivan Provorov (83) / Dalton Thrower (83)
Victor Bartley (79) / Andrej Sustr (78)

Ben Bishop (87)
Kaapo Kahkonen (83)
Alex Nedeljkovic (82)

The team was good for a 55-21-6 record, which was good for the Presidents Trophy, but they couldn't win the Cup as they lost to the Minnesota Wild in 6 games. Next time I'll take down the player stats and whatnot.

TRADE BETWEEN NASHVILLE AND VANCOUVER
With multiple RFAs on the market, could Vancouver be preparing to tender an offer sheet?

The Canucks have re-acquired their third round pick from Nashville (originally obtained in the Ellis trade). Although they also got Nashville's 2nd round pick in the upcoming draft, they had to pay a steep price.

The Canuck's sent the Predators one of their top young players, 23 year old Nicklas Jensen (81oa 23yo, 4*), along with a 4th and a 6th round pick. Jensen is a year removed from an AHL season where he lead a stacked AHL squad (Including Shinkaruk, and Baertschi) in goals and points. Jensen lost out a top 6 spot on the Canucks to Baertschi in training camp but remained on the team in a minimal role, mostly playing on the fourth line. Despite minimal ice time, Jensen provided serviceable bottom 6 scoring as he still managed to score 9 goals and 21 points.

The feeling is that Jensen could be a top 6 player, but there just isn't room on the Canucks right now, and he was the most logical piece they could move with enough value to get their 3rd round pick back. The Predators took advantage of the situation and as a result now have an NHL ready winger who was drafted in the 1st round a few years back.

A BITTER CANUCKS ORGANIZATION TARGETS RIVAL ANAHEIM DUCKS WITH OFFER SHEETS
In a move that seems to be partially motivated by spite, the Canucks have stolen RFA Jakob Silfverberg from the Anaheim Ducks. With the Ducks in a cap crunch and unable to sign multiple players, the Canucks targeted their rival who has knocked them out of the playoffs two seasons in a row.

8475164.jpg

First, they signed one of the Canuck's most promising young players Jakob Silfverberg to a massive 7 year 4.7M offer sheet that the Ducks couldn't match. As a result, the Ducks obtained the Canucks 1st and 3rd round draft picks.

BREAKING NEWS: CANUCKS SIGN FORMER DUCKS STARTING GOALIE FREE AGENT FREDERIK ANDERSEN (7 years 6.66M Limited NTC)
Second, only hours after a report that Markstrom and Neuvirth were committed long term, the Canucks scooped up UFA goalie Frederik Andersen from the open market. In a tandem with John Gibson, Andersen helped carry the Ducks to a Stanley Cup and shutout the Canucks in a crucial game 7 but with a cap crunch and a much cheaper John Gibson in the system, the Ducks low balled Frederik Andersen which has resulted in him jumping ship to their biggest rival. Andersen signed a 7 year 6.66M (limited NTC) contract with the Canucks and will no doubt be their goalie of the future.

CANUCKS FORCE DUCKS TO OVERPAY SIMON DESPRES (7 years 4M per offer sheet matched by the Ducks)
The Canucks also re-obtained their 2nd round pick from Winnipeg in exchange for Nashville's 2nd round pick and a 5th round pick. With Vancouver outperforming Nashville last season, the move made sense for the Jets. Vancouver used that pick to tender a 7 year 4M per offer sheet to top 6 defender Simon Despres. Despres has potential to be a good top 4 defender, but a 28M deal for what Despres has shown was widely acknowledged to be verging on insanity. Coincidentally, 4M was just what Anaheim had left in cap space. After much debate, the Ducks matched the deal.

At the end of the month the Canucks also signed Andre Benoit to a two year two way contract. Expect the Canucks to look for one or two more bottom pairing defenders via the trade market.

With over 10 contract spots open, Vancouver also invited multiple players seeking two way deals to training camp to try out.

BACK TO WHERE HE CAME FROM....JACOB MARKSTROM SENT TO FLORIDA
The Canucks have sent Jacob Markstrom along with their 2nd round pick in the upcoming draft to the Florida Panthers for defender Alex Petrovic, Florida's 2nd round pick, and Florida's 4th round pick in the upcoming draft.

With almost 20M in cap space, Florida should have no trouble extending Markstrom. Since the retirement of Luongo, Florida has been left without a starting goalie.

Petrovic is a big right handed stay at home top 4 defender who is signed for the next three seasons at 3.3M per before becoming a UFA. With Florida finishing in the bottom five of last year's draft, their pick is projected to be at the start of the round, while Vancouver's is projected to be at the end, which is why they demanded that the pick swap be included in the trade.

The Flames apparently made a big push for Markstrom, but the Canucks refused to deal him within their division. With Robin Lehner struggling, Tim Murray of the Sabres was rumoured to be the runner up behind Florida.

TO VANCOUVER
Alex Petrovic (RDFD 24yo 3.5G* 84oa top 4)
FLA 2nd Round Pick
FLA 4th Round Pick

TO FLORIDA
Jacob Markstrom (Starting goalie 26yo 4.5R* 86oa, 1 year left then UFA)
VAN 2nd Round Pick
