It depends on how they see Mackinnon & Barkov actually stacking up against each other though. If you have taken care of the main aspects of deciding who to take. The direction of the team and what you want to build can have a legitimate place in deciding who to draft.
Plenty of GM's and scouts have said plainly that they take needs and other things into account when it's very close or even, and to be honest... At least IMO, it's very close.
It's also easier to take some needs and your plans into account when drafting players who will likely step in and contribute almost immediately. There is less of a chance things change drastically within one or two years.
any fan who legitimately believes teams don't pick based upon need is fooling themselves. every GM in every league takes that into account as a potential tie breaker. a lot of teams say BPA but if you can fill a key hole with a player you rate just a tad below another player then why not? eventually you get to a point where you have enough at one position and have to pick because of need.
say we take Barkov or MacKinnon this season.
next year you cannot legitimately take another C in the first round because of the glut you'll have. Duchene,Staz,ROR,Barkov/MacKinnon and then Hishon in the minors.
then you still have Condon,Heard and Smith developing who have less overall likelihood to be a top 3 C at this point but could pan out.
same with Goalie, our D and Winger depth needs serious work and must be addressed significantly in the next few seasons via the draft.
If Barkov really is their guy, I'd rather have them take him at #1, then trade down and end up getting stuck with someone they don't really want. Especially since you won't gain that much by trading down.
Tampa is the only real wild card in the draft. Florida wants Mac, that's widely known. Tampa could go with Jones,Drouin,Barkov or Nichushkin, Columbus would likely take Mac if they picked #1.
so it's not a ton of risk even if Barkov is the #1 ranked guy on the board.
As a neutral observer I'd have to say it's not worth it to try to trade down. Historically, you'd pick up a second or maybe a second and third to go from 1-2 or 1-3 and only if the team has a specific player in mind. Plus I'd rather have my first choice than risk having my second or third choice plus two of my higher rated "B" prospects who might be stars or might never play for you instead of one.
that extra 2nd might not seem like much but the Avs have traditionally done work in the 2nd round and picked up some of our better players.
and this is a insanely deep draft. that 2nd rounder might end up being the difference between draft Mirco Mueller,Nic Petan or Robert Hagg and meaning we get to draft 2 of the 3 plus our first.
in this draft another 2nd is like possessing 3 1st round picks.
