EJ's shoulder was fine during his awful start to the season and EJ averaged less than a minute more than Tyson at ES in the regular season...17.92 vs 17.14...and played 3.6 minutes less in the playoffs...18.79 vs 15.19. With the all-situations #s tipping even more in Tyson's favor; becoming a 5 minute per game advantage in the playoffs & a .11 disadvantage in the regular season.
I didn't realize that their time on ice was that close. I was definitely wrong there. EJ was injured in the playoffs so that doesn't surprise me. I don't really think we should look at stretches during the season while comparing these 2. Completely different roles on defense and lets not pretend that Barrie didn't have some stretches of god awful play. Every player is streaky.

I know but that's basically Wilson's contract, and that's what I expect him to get.

Not crazy about taking Knight at #10 either, but I think they need to ensure they get him if they can. The need in net is too strong.
I mean yeah, but even with salary inflation the Wilson contract was a noticeable overpayment from start to finish, and this will certainly be another.

If we ended up with 10 + 16 (from a Barrie + 4 for Horvat + 10), I wonder what we’d do with 10 + 16.

Would we try to package that and move up into the 5-8 range and take Zegras?

Where's Kamenev? Your 2020-2021 fourth line is going to draw lots of penalties with Toninato and Greer.

He could for sure replace Toni. I just have a hard time penciling him into a lineup right now. Same with Timmins but that's why I waited till 2020-21 and crossed my fingers. :laugh:

I like how the consensus here is Kerfoot sucks and should be dumped. Then he’s being thrown in along with Barrie to try and even up the value to get Horvat. :laugh:
We just have to hope that other GM's see those point totals and fall for it.

My point with bringing up EJ's awful form for the first couple months was that it was the part of the season where he wasn't a liability, that was the outlying streak; not the parts when he struggled.

I'm hopeful that he can bounceback, since my gut says EJ will never get bought out, but I absolutely want to manage his workload as much as possible...and relying on him to carry our top 4 through the downs that eventually hit every rookie blueliner's season just feels like playing with fire.

Tyson's middling play, on the otherhand, wasn't as bad as EJ & was offset but a lot more strong play. So that's a false equivalency you're drawing between their respective streakiness last season.

They certainly fill different roles, but in today's NHL it is EJ whose role is best suited for a third pairing specialist, not Tyson's.

Nothing wrong with trying to fool Benning. "We know you're losing your 60 pts C, but here's a 40 pts C to help".

Signing Pavelski to 3 years is like living paycheck by paycheck and buying a 15 years old Mercedes Benz.
Are we seriously going to sit here and pretend Joe Pavelski didn't just score 38 goals, and has scored 60+ points every single season since 2010 minus the lockout year?

Like are you actually telling me you prefer Micheal Ferland, who has scored 20+ goals in his career once over Joe Pavelski?

Ferland has UFA bust written all over him.

That's just because Barrie is better than Horvat and the contracts are the only reason that there's any difference in value to make-up :naughty:

I'm not one of Kerfoot's haters. I think he brings things to the table with his skill and production. That said, I've always thought he would be traded because I didn't see a long term future for him here, and he doesn't play well on the wing.

Plus he's a Vancouver boy. Seems like they'd be interested in him if the Avs needed to add.

I mean yeah, but even with salary inflation the Wilson contract was a noticeable overpayment from start to finish, and this will certainly be another.

I definitely agree, but I think that's about to be the going rate for gritty 20 goal, 40 point wingers in UFA.

With the other moves I proposed, he's not as big a need any more so passing on him isn't a big deal. Without the other moves, I'm more in favor of giving him the overpayment though.

Either way, I think the Avs have the cap space, and a cheap enough D core for a little while to afford building a stacked lineup.

EJ + Kerf + Soda (50% retained)
<--->
Kadri + Kapanen + Zaitsev (~750K retained) - Marleau

Flip Marleau (X% retained) further west to get some capspace back

#16(+) <---> Zucker/Kessel

Boom.

I understand and respect your rationale as to why the Avs should keep Barrie. But to me it seems like you're taking the there's only one way to get to and win the SCF next year and I'd disagree.

FTR, I'm fine with keeping Barrie. But there's no denying it makes sense to trade him from a cap management standpoint as well as saving another protected slot in the upcoming entry draft.

I don't foresee the Avs being active in FA given the crazy contracts being handed out. And if I was to pick one poster who is most likely to be severely annoyed with Sakic's willingness to sit and be patient before finally taking some action then it'd be you. Still, I'm pretty certain Sakic will come up with a short term solution before the start of next season whether it's a trade (most likely with TML or Bolts) because some team is having cap issues or even signing an older vet like Pavs. But I think Pavs will want a longer term than Sakic is willing to give.
