Not a chance Sakic is trading down from 4 in a Barrie trade.
I think the point of Vancouver moving to #4 would be to draft Byram, but trading for Barrie AND Byram? That doesn't make that much sense, especially with Hughes already there.

Unless Benning would use the #4 to draft a center to replace Horvat? But that'd not be a Benning-like move.

I'd say the chances of trading both the 4OA and Barrie to Vancouver are very, very slim. I don't think Horvat is on the table anyway.

But our blueline only became an advantage with Barrie + Makar. So you're expecting 1 offseason to make Cale capable of not just replicating his own strong start even after teams start to adapt to him, but also taking over the responsibilities of our #1 blueliner. I dunno if even prime-Cale will be a safe bet to give us what we got out of him+Barrie this postseason...much less rookie-Cale...

Nevermind how increasing EJ's workload would only increase the chances of last season's cliff-dive to accelerate. I was nervous enough with EJ PK-specialist'ing it up with Cole on the third pairing.

Whereas turning our forward core into an advantage only requires a capable 2nd line that can just hold par against other 2nd lines. Our top line gives us an advantage in every match and if Jost / Soda / Jimmothy / etc. where in the bottom 6...where they belong...our bottom 6 would give us an advantage as well.

So moving our best blueliner to fill a hole that we just need patched adequately, while taking away the advantage we currently enjoy on the blueline, makes little sense to me.

I think we have different theories on roster building and what Makar will bring to this team in a full season, so I'm going to leave it alone.

Looking forward to draft weekend! This is the most excited I've been for an Avalanche draft since we took MacK.

They're not as good but I think I'd rather go down cap dump roads like Stastny/Clarkson and Kadri/Marleau and keep Barrie than lose him.

Didn't mean to drag you into this, just you're kinda the poster boy for the 'trade Barrie' side of these debates. I think at the end of the day both sides do have valid points but nobodies changed their opinions in over 2+ years of this debate, so I don't really see the point of it anymore.

I agree..let's move onto the draft.

Doubt anyone will change their opinions. Barrie has a year remaining, we'll know soon enough on his future.

We just don't see the game the same way if you're content with banking on a rookie & this version of EJ to anchor a contending top 4.

If you want to go into greater depth, I can do so after my test that starts in 3 hours.
I don't expect the Rookie to anchor anything except the first unit PP next year. EJ is regressing, but should still be viable for 2 more seasons. I think his shoulder injury played a big role in the playoffs he had. EJ was our minuet muncher all of last year and Barrie or no, I doubt that's going to change. I'm also a bit concerned about Makar's ice time if we keep Barrie.

I'm confused by where having different opinions on roster build would conflict with that basic question: If Cale replaces Barrie, who are we getting to replace Cale?

But fair enough, I should get back to studying anyways.

If we end up getting #10, there are only two players acceptable to draft at that spot: Podkolzin or Boldy. Especially if we get Horvat, as well. Bring Panarin in this summer to play on the top line, push Landy down to play with Horvat for now, and Horvat & Pod/Boldy in the future, and we'll have one of the most well-rounded and dangerous top-6 groups in the NHL.

@RoyIsALegend from previous thread...

Pavelski
Nyquist
Lee
Zuccarello
Ferland
Dzingel
Connolly

Out of this list, who is the true 2nd liner that will help the Avs upgrade secondary scoring enough to take the next step?

Pavelski will be ok for a year or two I guess, he can still put up 50 to 60 points for the next couple of years.

The rest are kinda meh, except for Lee. I think for me its Pavelski but only if it's for a year or two and Lee

Yuckyuckyuckyuckyuck.

I know but that's basically Wilson's contract, and that's what I expect him to get.

Not crazy about taking Knight at #10 either, but I think they need to ensure they get him if they can. The need in net is too strong.

EJ's shoulder was fine during his awful start to the season and EJ averaged less than a minute more than Tyson at ES in the regular season...17.92 vs 17.14...and played 3.6 min/game less in the playoffs...18.79 vs 15.19.

With the all-situations #s tipping even more in Tyson's favor; becoming a 5m/g advantage in the playoffs & a .11m/g disadvantage in the regular season.

Doubt VAN moves Horvat, but to sweeten the offer simply disregard switching the picks. If this involves drafting Knight, he's likely available at 16th.

Barrie
Kerfoot

for

Horvat

VAN keeps their pick, they can still draft another 1C which is easier at 10th than 16th to soften the loss of Horvat. AVs can still have Knight at 16th should they choose to draft with their pick.

Not interested in the aging Pavelski which seems to be a possible buyout contract beyond 2 years. I'm fine with Ferland, but rather keep it a shorter deal.
