What option do the Leafs have other than giving in to all of Matthews’ contract demands? He’s got a full no move and is a UFA July 1, 2024. He has all the leverage. The contract he gets might not be what he deserves (compared to other top players) but Treliving has to pay up or lose the player.
Imo Matthews next contract is 15+ and on a short term.
They can lose the player. They might anyway. Though Dreger thinks it is 100% that he will stay, but personally, I don't think anything is 100%.

Paying this guy years at top money, TML will regret it. His wrists are done, you can think he is worth money, but overall, he is done.

You are wrong he has 44 points in 50 games including 22 goals.

That actually proves his point lmao.

542 points in 481 games, 299 goals.
Pace of 51 goals, 92 points over 82 games.
22/22/44 in 50 games is a pace of 36 goals, 72 points over 82 games. 1.13PPG in the regular season vs 0.88 in the playoffs.

McDavid has 1.49PPG in the regular season, 1.53 in the playoffs
1.07 vs 1.30 in the playoffs for MacKinnon
1.17 vs 1.57 for Draisaitl
1.04 vs 1.03 for Pastrnak
1.13 vs 1.13 for Kucherov
0.93 vs 1.00 for Point

Hell we can even compare him to a similar goal scorer that is considered by some a playoffs no show and who even shares his birthday.

1.10 vs 0.96 for Ovechkin. Significantly less of a decline in the playoffs than Matthews.

I also think we start seeing more short term specific to players like Matthews and McDavid.

I can see them doing the 8 year deal if a player wants to massively front load the contract by getting paid 18-24m in the first season.

I’ve said it all along.

The maple leafs shot them selves by giving Matthews this contract. There was zero need to do it as an arbitrator literally couldn’t come back giving a record payout amount as the entire point of arbitration is finding common ground.

They should have had Marner at 9-9.5 and Matthews at 10-10.5 which would them have allowed them to go and do 13-13.5 on this deal and even do $11.5-12.0 on Marner.

Just no way are these guys taking $1-1.5 more to buy up UFA years.

His point was that he dissapears, not that he doesn't play as well.

That’s the point…he calls all the shots….and a shorter term deal allows him to cash in again during his prime. He’s not signing for 8 years….somewhere between 3 and 5 years.

Agree, good player (at least in the regular season) but a very poor value. Would be reasonable at $9m x 4 but not a penny or day more.

Too many sucker GMs out there of course
He’s already at $11.6m cap hit. He’s going to take less?

He can walk away in less than 12 months if he wants and then negotiate with 32 teams.

They day players start taking team discounts in Toronto is the day the world stops spinning. The taxes to live in Ontario are beyond stupid and to put up with the obnoxious media without getting paid extra to put up with them is like nails on the chalkboard daily.

Playing in Toronto sucks, living in anywhere in the GTA and surrounding areas is becoming worse.

Raptors have had trouble keeping players wanting to stick around as well.

Yes, his playoffs PPG is 0.88. Over an 82 game average that's 72 points and 36 goals in 82 games. Since when does a player who puts up 72 points in 82 games when it matters most deserve to be the highest paid player in the NHL? This is lunacy. So far Matthews has not shown he is built for the playoffs. He hates engaging in scrums and spends more time on the fringe, relying on his shot, then grinding it out and using his size and strength to battle. He also has a very nonchalant, ho-hum approach to losing and getting bounced year after year. It's painful to watch.

Nope, it is about the 200ft game Matthews also plays.
This is pure hyperbole. Matthews is not Datsyuk, Bergeron, Kopitar, Barkov, Gainey, or Clarke. His overplayed "200 foot game" is far from the reason the Leafs win or lose, hence 1 playoff round win in 7 years. If Matthews expects 13 mil a year it better be because he's going to come up huge in the money games, not score at a 36 goal pace and backcheck a little.
