More then just a self-made successful businessman and sports team owner. Ilitch played a huge role in revitalizing sections of downtown Detroit; funded youth hockey and other philanthropic interests; and quietly did many many other charitable acts that he never sought recognition for.

The terms legend and pillar of the community sometime get tossed around too easily, but not in the case of Ilitch.
