Seeing the mess baseball is going through I wonder if other sports STARTING their seasons will face similar situations? How many hockey teams lose money during regular times? Now no fans in the rink come next season? They will take a beating

obviously starting a season is probably more challenging. But what Baseball is fight for hockey already has, which is a guarantee split of the revenue. The baseball owners want the players to accept a 50-50 split of the revenues in order to account for a lack of gate revenue when games do begin. The players don’t want to accept anything beyond prorated their salaries for the number of games played because that would be basically accepting a cap, which they have fought against for the last 25 years.

It is going to be easier for hockey to restart as they already have the 50-50 split agreement. The only difficulty may be how to handle escrow and whether it will need to spread out into future years. Of course given there are only 2 years left on the CBA that may require a new cba negotiation. But apparently they had already started that before the pandemic hit.

Gotta suck to be a leaf fan. You finally get the team together and a window opens for you. Then you just happen to play in a division with two legit cup favorites and the playoff format is divisional. Ouch.

having one cup contender is tough but two? Not to mention playing In the conference I think favorite to win the cup.
Not to mention paying half of your salary cap out to a sixth of the team. Doesnt help the contending windoe

It might just be the Sierra Nevada talking but watching this replay of the 2014 USA-Russia game has me really missing hockey for the first time since all this shit went down

Are they still going to make it so you can only rise up to 5 spots if you win the draft lottery? I remember that being considered for this year. If that's the case, the Devils and Sabres really get the short end of the stick by not getting a spot in the playoffs or a shot at Lafreniere.

5 spots?

You mean 4 spots.

If it was 5 spots, the Devils would end up with the #1 pick (moved up from 6 to 1).

If its true that four teams hovering around .500 for each conference get a chance at the playoffs AND the lottery - thats some major f***ing bullshit

What the hell do the remaining seven teams get out of this? Besides absolutely screwed

Thatd mean we could, in theory, be bumped from 6 all the way down to 9, and have Arizona and Vancouver’s picks be very late 1st round if they won some playoff series’

Imagine if we went from thinking we were gonna get ~ 6, 10, 17 to getting something like ~ 9, 17, 24

It would be the ultimate slap in the face if a team that participated in the play-in tournament-playoffs AND somehow ended up winning the Draft.

I feel as Devils fans we watched that game/shootout with an added interest and the USA win was so much better for us. I hold nothing against Kovalchuk now but at the time I was still incredibly salty.

I don't think 1OA was ever in our sights. Now Byfield is a mighty fine consolation.
Although, Laf would set the team up to be exciting for years to come and players would come in FA.
If we win the lottery but only move up 4 slots, I dont want Byfield as a consolation. I would do everything possible to make a deal with Detroit to swap pick 2 + something else for pick 1.

I’d keep our assets, slide Byfield as our #2 center and have Jack mold his game on the wing, eventually turning out to be the next Patrick Kane with better wheels.

Has there been any news on what the outside seven teams are being given? Permanent odds no further than their own pick? So say Jersey cant slide past 7, thatd be nice.

Also I dont understand the point of limiting number of slots moved if the playoff teams dont get a lottery chance. If they do however then I better not find out Jersey can slide past six to like 9 while three teams who got chances all win the lotto and move up four...

Basically I think not firing Hynes a week or two later not only costs us a shitty playoff chance but also costs us draft capital now. I doubt we will get increased odds so basically we will get toppled over by one of the playoff teams when they inevitably win the lottery

If this playoff format moves forward, this is actually the best case scenario for the Devils.

Off-season will likely be very compressed and won't start till late November or mid-December. Devils will be well rested, the young players like Hughes will have time to put on muscle, and our entire team will have five or six months to work on their games. Someone like Butcher could benefit tremendously from three months to work with a skating coach.

Will Butcher is 25 years old - no skating coach is going to change how terrible he is...

If he hasnt been seeing one since he was drafted then maybe hes a lot dumber than previously thought

I mean there's not as much you can do in a normal off-season. You're probably partially recovering from injury and not wanting to burn yourself out before next season.

We're two months away from the last game. Everyone should be healthy. Hire a skating coach, work on your speed, and you can make progress you wouldn't have had the time to make otherwise.

Will Butcher is what he is, his skating isnt anywhere near good enough to improve

He cant even improve his shot that he claims hes been working on since his draft year. Hes the best shooter we have if the goal is to hit the goaltenders chest or miss wide entirely

Butcher needs to be eradicated from this team not have resources further sunken into him

Butcher has his issues, but let's not pretend like he still isn't a quality NHL defender and a solid PPQB.

His skating is not the issue. It's his speed and acceleration combined with his size.

Will Butcher regularly gets beat while hes skating backwards. Will f***ing Butcher has been beat to the puck in HIS corner off a defensive face off.

I have friends who are better skaters than Will Butcher. Hes not an NHL defenseman, he just gets paid like one

I don’t think Butcher is a solid PPQB.

He can pass decently to the halfboards but he doesn’t shoot to score well, doesn’t shoot for tips nor rebounds well, doesn’t make creative passes, and doesn’t help enter the zone with control.

He was probably the 3rd or 4th best PP defenseman on this past years Devils and none of the Devils defenseman are particularly great on the PP.

If you have a forward that will run the PP from the wing, like Hall did, then Butcher doesn’t hurt you much but he doesn’t really add much either.

It depends your set-up. Being able to distribute the puck effectively and read the play is half of what being a PPQB is about. The umbrella set up is all about being in those positions because those are where the angles are most effective. It's nearly impossible to defend that set-up with four players once you're in position. Butcher does a good job of getting set-up and maintaining the puck in the zone which is half the battle.

The days of the defender with a booming shot on the PP are pretty much over. It's more about being simple and effective. Having a talented guy like Hughes, Makar, or Burns will obviously make a huge difference, but for the most part, it's distribution and moving the puck to the dangerous guy more than anything. Or knowing when the lane is opening and taking your shot.

Just wondering if this means they will have some kind of special draft for just the 7 non-playoff teams(us included) for the Top 7 picks and then have the rest of the draft take place after the proposed 24-team tournament(or whatever it is) for the rest of the teams?
