What do you guys/gals think of Makar making he’s debut for the Avalanche tonight? They now have to protect him in the expansion draft. I wonder how I would feel about this and we were in the playoffs and we did this with Ty Smith/Davies or Walsh. I guess I would do the same thing...tough call for me.

I wouldnt - I think its a terrible call and not for the kid but for the organization. Now he has to be protected and loses a year of ELC

Terrible choices from a team desperately trying to compete for some odd reason

Unique situation IMO. Avs are just going for it and it could bit them.

In 'our' position I'd be more than fine with it considering we probably don't have enough defensemen worth protecting in the expansion draft as it is.

You'd have to tell me who they could lose that they would otherwise be able to protect, compared to who they'd lose without signing Makar before I really care about it either way. I don't know if the quality of the player would really be that different. Besides rosters can change a LOT in two years, you can't worry about that now.

We have Vatanen, Severson, and Butcher. Adding another defenseman would expose one of them, since going from protecting 7/3/1 to 8/1 exposes Zacha, Coleman, and Wood, so if we're adding to our D, he better be worth losing one of them.

Vat's not even signed beyond next year and after this year I'm not 100% on long-term extending him anyway. Butcher could easily be traded by then, heck maybe Severson even gets traded by then. Nobody else currently in the organization who's eligible would even be worth discussing (Ty Smith obviously isn't eligble, neither is Davies). As far as the Avs...

Colorado Avalanche - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

I don't actually see a lot worth protecting on the blueline currently. EJ's a definite. Barrie if he re-signs, if not Zadarov I suppose, and Makar. They still have Connor Timmins in the pipeline too so they might not even care of a Zadarov-type gets picked.

Keep in mind when we likely add a defenseman this off-season , theyll need to be protected

Sure, I'm just saying if we were talking about a hypothetical 2018 playoffs with this current roster it wouldn't be much of an issue.
I dont like it for Colorado because of the same reason I just mentioned - I dont see them keeping Zadorov so another dman has to come in as well as Makar

Well ya, of course if we trade away all our defensemen, of course we'd have no defensemen to protect (unless we get veteran ones back).

I think it's a terrific move for the Avs and Makar.

Joe Sakic isn't an idiot and they analyzed the situation more then once. They'll have plenty of time to figure out their roster in regards to the expansion draft.

You can't worry about things that might happen in 2 years when you're trying to make some noise today, especially after going through a rough stretch as of late. The player will learn a lot from this and the team will benefit from it down the line.

AV is another overrated head coach that everybody thinks is good because his teams always make the playoffs.

His system is awful. It works if you have great goaltending because you’ll be facing a lot of shots unless you have a really stacked team.

It wouldn't be the end of the world if we lost Butcher to Seattle, especially if Davies and/or Walsh pan out. We did really well last time losing only Merrill, and can't expect to get off as easy next time with what we should assume will be a stronger/deeper lineup.

Luckily they have future Hall of Famer and multiple Vezina winner Carter Hart.:sarcasm:

Interesting article on Buccigross and Melrose, how ESPN may be working to get the NHL back, and how they're surviving as hockey broadcasters there (paywall):

John Buccigross and Barry Melrose are happy to be near the...

I was so pissed at ESPN and their hockey coverage that I literally haven't had the channel programmed into my cable box since they dropped the NHL (It helps that I don't follow any other sport).

Also, MAN Bucci looks old now. I didn't even recognize him.
