Interesting article on Buccigross and Melrose, how ESPN may be working to get the NHL back, and how they're surviving as hockey broadcasters there (paywall):

John Buccigross and Barry Melrose are happy to be near the...

I was so pissed at ESPN and their hockey coverage that I literally haven't had the channel programmed into my cable box since they dropped the NHL (It helps that I don't follow any other sport).

Also, MAN Bucci looks old now. I didn't even recognize him.

This is a theme I miss.

always fond memories of nhl2nite on the duce

its really funny/interesting that in these times people even still need to watch "sport center" type shows. why? the other day preds/stars i was listening to the radio show the following morning about this incredible save by pekka. what did i do? type his name in twitter and boom highlight comes up. just really no need for in depth analysis by "professionals" imo

Since the last contract with NBC was awarded in 2011, ESPN has to get back into the NHL/hockey ring again. I believe they have even televised some form of hockey games on one of their networks in the time period since.

When they low balled the league a few years prior to social media's infancy beginning to gain traction, ESPN was still the go-to for breaking sports news, coverage, highlights, etc and in having the upper hand basically said to the NHL that coming off of the lockout, you need us more than we need you.

Ironic how the tides have turned in the 15 years or so since that lockout with the emergence of social media, the struggles ESPN has endured both related and not to social media and they have since been trying to add the NHL and hockey in general back into the fold because, while they don't necessarily need the NHL more than it needs them, they could certainly use the NHL in their hopes of gaining more viewers.

This is a theme I miss.

In fairness though espn did have a right to lowball the nhl before they left. Coming off a lost season? Two work stoppages in what 10 years? Then they leave for the outdoor network? Just goes to show you how much interest was in the nhl back then.

Now espn doesn’t carry the weight it use to but you can’t deny the name recognition it gives.

Not to mention it had Gary throne calling the games and he rocks

Those intros btw rocked. ESPN and abc did some great ones. One of the best ones I’ve ever seen was game 7 against the ducks. When they did the mighty ducks movie and the devils were right out of central casting. Epic. I wish I still had that somewhere

Found it.

Really don't want ESPN to broadcast NHL games ever again.

ESPN used to be great, but they are garbage now and have been for some time. Go watch a Sunday Night Baseball game on ESPN, they are an absolute joke.

I'm good with NBC.

lol yeah because Pierre is much better? Guess people forgot the tracking technology from the allstar game nbc threw up there.

Maybe I’m a rare type of person but I don’t care who calls the game I will sit and watch it if I want to then when it’s over I turn it off. Announcers don’t make the game better or worse for me.

Can ESPN even afford NHL games?

They've alienated most NHL fans, have nobody to cover the sport on their shows, and have been passed by FOX and NBC in the sports market.

Yzerman expected to be announced as GM of Red Wings.

Likely means they will be very active this summer, so something to keep an eye on.

I love what he built in Tampa. That’s bad news for anyone fighting without Detroit. Their turn around will be fast.

man, in retrospect that ducks team was garbage. without blimpee mcgee back there they wouldn’t have made it out of the first round

a team that could never win a cup with the best forward and d group?

two things to keep in mind too when trying to attract UFA and players to "lighter" dealers.

1. detroit is no tampa
2. no income tax DOES play a role in lowering the cap hit

Doesn’t sound like a GMs fault by the way you described it.

Tampa DID get to Game 7 of the ECF twice and the SCF once, it’s not like they completely did bupkus with Yzerman.

no i'm not blaming the gm at all but i am saying everyone that is singing the praise of him like hes the second coming should stop and think for a second.

he had a lot of good things going for him in tampa that he won't have going for him in detroit.

they will always be known for this last series though. and also as a great team that could never win a cup under his watch.

He definitely was put in a good position to succeed and also was the benefit from some very good drafting over his tenure!

i agree he did great things will be interesting to see how he can drum up interest to play for the wings and take discounts to do so

I’m sure there are a contingent of players who are either from the area or have a fondness for an original six team that will make their way there. First he has to purge the team of bad contracts and he won’t want to send out assets which means the rebuild may be slowed with lack of spots for some of the developing players on the way up.

Sad to see the destruction of a beloved tradition because select people conflate playing a song with endorsing the norms of a particular era.

think your overreacting here. yes i'm sure that was acceptable at the time but we do evolve and learn from the mistakes of the past. I mean people once did believe the earth was flat once. they are still going to play the song just a different singer
