I would still take Dalhin over him in a redraft but man Svechinkov is such an awesome 2nd pick and it's really a huge compliment to him.

A real coming out party for him this year and a star for many years going forward.
If the Canes had won that lottery I still think they would have chosen Svech. He filled a massive need for the team at that time, and was by far the better choice for this team at that time.

Doesn't mean that Dahlin isn't better, just that Svech was more valuable to this specific need.

I can see that as the Canes top 6 quality was already in such great shape adding another guy would only complicate things like have two elite #1 NHL goalies.

They could draft Dahlin and then traded him to Buffalo for Svech+, because Buffalo needed a defenseman. On the other hand, Svechnikov and Eichel would have been great together.

So much fun to watch. He’s going to be such a complete player when he’s fully developed and worked out the kinks of the NHL game. He lays the body, he’s hard on the forecheck, he’s gritty. His skill is off the charts and his shot is insane.

He’s also spent a lot of time on a line with his center being Jordan Staal. He was with Aho/TT for a stretch but he’s back with Staal again, and I hate it.

Daigle was NEVER considered to be in the Lindros/Crosby/McDavid tier. Neither was Svechnikov(since this thread is about him). He looks very strong and good this year, though. Some similarities to Mackinnon, but Mack was a bit better when he came into the league.

He was Tavares-level. Basically as high as it gets without being one of the 3 you mentioned.

That said, he was definitely Lindros/Crosby/McDavid in Eastern Canada. He was compared to Mario because he was the best prospect out of the Q since him. He was French-Canadian, and Ottawa is right on the Quebec border. Local hype is always huge, but Daigle certainly was among the most hyped ever in that regard.

Svechnikov was nowhere near that level of hype, but he's got a much much brighter future in the NHL than Daigle did (in hindsight).

Svechnikov had plenty of hype. He just had the misfortune to be in the same draft as Dahlin. I saw him, and obviously still do, as a franchise cornerstone piece in the mold of Kovy, Kane etc. He will be a top winger in the league, and Canes can be very happy to have him.

BTW, looking back at the summer polls involving him is hilarious.

Svech has been fantastic. He's the last one off the ice at practice, a great team mate, big and strong for a 19 year old, amazing shot and a bit of an MF'er to play against. He always seems to be in the middle of the scrum after the whistle. I suppose after getting KO'd by Ovi, he figures he's seen the worst of it.
Now, please Rod, get this kid away from the black hole that is Jordan Staal.

Unfortunately that line produced two goals last night...so they'll be together for a stretch here. I hate it. This happened early in the season and I couldn't stand watching two grinders play with Svech.

IMO that's exactly what would have happened. Canes have been doing some unconventional things lately, like the Marleau trade and trading guys only a year after signing long UFA deals. They have pulled the trigger on whatever made sense, and working out a trade with Buffalo would have made sense.

If the 1OA was up for a trade, there would've been a lot more bidders for it than BUF... and maybe we would've kept Dahlin and traded away some other D-man instead.

We maybe lucked out there hard not getting the 1OA but getting Svech instead.

I'm not convinced they would've taken Svechnikov. When the draft was happening Dahlin was seen as the clear favourite so in their eyes they would've probably preferred taking Dahlin while trading another D to get a winger out of it.

Svechnikov's closed that gap since (obviously) and I think he'll end up being one of the best wingers in the game. Dahlin's struggling but he's also playing a very difficult position so defensemen often take longer to reach their prime.

Beyond being a very good and effective player, Svechnikov is getting close to being a different kind of rarity... being one of those players you’ll actually pay good money to see live.

Awesome talent.

Unfortunately with Necas and Haula out right now they almost have to do this to have more than one line that can score. The last few games before Svech was moved teams would just load up the best defense against the Svech-Aho-Turbo line knowing we literally didn't have anything else that could work. Got blanked twice in a row before the switch. At least now there are 2 lines teams have to defend instead of 1.

Once those two come back I suspect we'll see Svech move back up. But maybe not.

The gift that keeps on giving.

I do not know any Svechnikov anymore. I do not expect any Svechnikov to be a superstaranymore. I do not think they can prove me wrong.

There were so many before him with exacty that predicate to them. And then they went to NA and became 3rd liners on a good day. I see that fact and have a hard time predicting A.Svechnikov to be any different.

Svechnikov does show some promise but falls further and further behind rightful expectations that we had when he played in Russia. I am more confident than ever btw that Brind'Amour is not a NHL head coach.

LOL You never seem to get it. Svechnikov already regressed in NA. What do I care if he becomes a 60-70pts star?
