Svechnikov now has 23 points in 21 games and has been an absolute horse. He obviously had that lacrosse goal, but he’s scored a few more goals with some absolutely lethal wrist shots.

He’s been sensational this year. I expected him to be good, but not this good this soon.

10 goals so far tied with Aho

That (Teräväinen - Aho - Svechnikov) line is perhaps one the best line in NHL

He is certainly coming into his own. Looks very strong, and will compliment their less physical skilled players. If they can get Nino going, and get decent goaltending, they will be a tough team to beat.

Watching Svechnikov take a step and Necas get off to a hot start (15 in 21) has me feeling extremely excited about the future. They can compete at a high level consistently with what the Aho/Teravainen/Svechnikov/Necas core group of skill players has the potential to be.

And that skill group is full Euro too...

He's equivalent to a fully mature NHL player already, with some room left to grow. Rarely do you see a guy come into the league with such a high skill level, a great sent of hockey instincts, AND the right mentality around putting in the work to grow his game. He has all three and frankly I'm not at all surprised that he's rising quickly. Not that he's Crosby or McDavid level elite, but he has that same rare combination of skill-instinct-mentality.

My main concern is that playing such a physical style, health problems seem almost inevitable. He's going to start getting targeted and it's going to be sad when that catches up.

nobody really cared last year because its Carolina and Svech wasn't Dahlin, but they we were so incredibly lucky to win the lottery and get the best forward in the draft. They jumped, what, like 10 spots in the draft? A 2% chance to win? The good thing about jumping up so far is they already had a decent team though which allowed them to bring him along slowly last season, which contributed to the lack of hype. I'm hoping by next year we're saying the same thing about Kakko.

Extremely lucky to get Svech. Although, perhaps it wasn't all luck. After years of mediocre teams and no picks higher than 5th, maybe the Hockey Gods decided to reward the Canes for refusing to tank and bequeathed them the lottery win.

No matter how it came about, it's hard to express how appreciative we are to have Svech in the organization. Not only for his skills, but also his attitude. Every indication so far is that this is the kind of kid you want as part of the foundation of your franchise.

I think that's a bit of hindsight saying "they already had a decent team".
  • Up until last year, the Canes had missed the playoffs in 9 straight seasons.
  • Before the season started, Canes traded away their best goal scorer (Skinner) for nothing. They also traded Lindholm and Hanifin for Hamilton and Ferland and let Ryan go for nothing.
  • Canes started the season with the following centers: Aho (who had never played C in the NHL), Staal, Wallmark (a rookie with less than 20 NHL games under his belt), and Necas (another rookie with no NHL experience who was quickly sent to the AHL and was replaced by Clark Bishop - another rookie with no NHL experience).
  • Canes started the season with Scott Darling and Mrazek, a castoff nobody wanted who signed a $1M "show me" deal as their goalies.
  • Canes came into 18-19 with no players that had been over 70 points, no players over 30 goals (and only 3 that had achieved 20) and only 3 players over 50 points...the prior season.
  • Canes came into 18-19 with a rookie head coach, Waddell as the GM and a low payroll.
  • Canes 1st round draft picks since their last playoff appearance: 7, 12, 8 (traded), 5, 7, 5, 13, 12. Summary: They weren't a very good team during those years.
People generally viewed Carolina as a team with terrible center depth, bottom 5 forwards and crappy goaltending. Very few viewed them as a decent team at the start of last season.

Yeah, people knew he would be a beast, but still the kid is just 19. He now leads his team in points (and his team leads the NHL in points), plays good defense, and what a beauty empty netter he scored last night! He's really fast and explosive!

You decided to push the stock of every Russian performing well? I don't think they need this. Especially on this site.

Svechnikov is doing well. He was expected to. That's all.
