who cares what round he was drafted in 6 years ago?

hes been a beast in every league hes played in since, including the nhl. why should he take a discount because he was behind on his development 6 years ago?

"Beast" seems a little strong don't you think?

I do agree with you that he's better than his draft pedigree. He shouldn't take a discount.

If Marner signs in the neighbourhood of 10.5M Leafs will have 3.5M of cap to work with 6 players to sign, including Johnsson, Kapanen, a replacement for Gardiner and Hainsey. You can see the challenge here. Since Johnsson declined 2.1 x 2. He will be looking north of 3M. You are correct, an offer sheet of 3.5 would put the Leafs in a position of matching or taking the 2nd rd pick.
The way I see it is 3.5+Marleau+Zaits= 14.25 to sign Kap, replace Gardiner+Hainsey, Zaits, all can be replaced by ELC players. so 14-4 for Kap, then elc's for Rosen, Lilj,Bracco=7 mil left to add a D man or if we keep Zaits that 3 mil to add a depth RHD.
Marleau is all but gone, he is not going to left the last yr of a contract screw the Leafs, especially when he can have an ingrown toe nail and still get his $$ and we get cap relief.

IM getting a little tired of the Toronto media etc, boosting every player we have so they feel they deserve max contracts.

Kap is also more logical for us to move. We are weaker at LW than RW and AJ will be cheaper. Not rocket science. See ya Kap.
Kapanen plays both sides fwiw, I like him better as a LW for the one-time option, he shoots high and hits goalies in the numbers too often when the goalie is set

And just as often, a Habs fan creates a straw man in the argument. As if anyone has ever said the Leaf's "management team never made any mistake under Shanahan".
Talk about weak...

Right?!

And then he has the audacity to call his shot weak

Who would be a good comparable for Johnsson from past RFA contracts?
on a bridge?

perhaps Tyler Johnson... he had 100 gp with 58 pts at 23 years old, signed 3.33M x 3 yrs. AJ has 46 pts in 82 gp at 24 years old

although ones a C and the other's a W, that's the last bridge i can recall with comparable PPG and age

This will be funny.

All-offensive mistake-prone team = leads to high/inflated scoring.

Forwards will demand too much money. f*** them, let them walk.

No playoff series wins, thanks to horrible defensive play.

Cheap ELCs in. = mistake-prone kid team = leads to high/inflated scoring.

No playoff series wins, thanks to horrible defensive play.

Repeat.

Ah yes, the Pittsburgh Penguins method. Couple of good players, fill the rest of the holes with maybes, hope for the best.

Darren Dreger stated the Leafs offered Johnsson two year deal at 2.1 million per year and a four year deal at 2.6 million per year........he declined both offers around the TDL. Both deals seem a bit light, likely get around 3 million guessing. No discount by Johnsson coming.

So say Johnsson is looking for 3 million + that means Kapanen will not accept less than 3 million as well.

So Leafs are looking at 16 to 17.5 million for Marner, Kapanen and Johnsson and they have what... 2.35$ cap space?

Add to that the fact that if they want to get rid of Zaitsev then will have to eat a chunk of his salary and this is shaping up to be a nightmare for Dubas and the leafs.

It's looking like Leafs will lose three of Kapanen, Johnsson, Gardiner, Marner.

Or Kadri, Zaitzev and one the above just to make room for Marner and possibly a defender.

Hopefully their prospects come in and perform because they will look very different next season!

Go Raptors!

Some of those are just made up for the sake of argument:
1. Johnsson is looking for 3 million + that means Kapanen will not accept less than 3 million as well.
We cannot know what he is asking for and he could go to arbitration ( that would be late July or Early August) Kappen could sign earlier and is independent of Johnsson.
2. if they want to get rid of Zaitsev then will have to eat a chunk of his salary and this is shaping up to be a nightmare for Dubas and the leafs.
Zaitsev has asked the team for a trade and the Leafs will work together to find one for him. They will not have to eat salary nor will it be a nightmare for anyone.
3. Gardiner is a UFA he is free, but the others are under contract.
4. Hopefully their prospects come in and perform because they will look very different next season!
yes, there will be some change.
