If anybody else needs proof the W-L stats for pitchers are meaningless: Chris Archer was 3-10 at home last year, with a 2.65 ERA.

Goins over Upton? ...I don't get it.

Seems pretty clear it was all about depth.

They're not 100% sure Travis can carry the load to start the season. They don't want to lose Goins, in case Travis has to go to the DL.

In the OF, they have depth. Pierce is healthy. Carrerra is a good 4th OF and Pompey looked pretty good before his injury. Plus they signed Coughlin.

It was the 25th spot on the roster and they need Goins more than they needed Upton.
