Can you make a case why? I watched every game this year and I don't think any player played better overall than Sandin. He was essentially Romanov but with a worse team around him, and with an incredible offensive side. They were the best 2 D bar none, but the right decision was made.

Agreed. He looked better offensively than I thought he was projected to be. Interested to see if he gets NHL time soon.

Blew him away how? Are you basing this on one play where Sandin was put in an awful situation at the end of the shift? Also, what's your argument for "better but not by much" offensively?

Sandin - 3g, 7a in 7GP
Romanov - 1g, 5a in 7GP

2+2 is not a small gap in 7GP.

Sandin is a give away machine typical leafs defenseman high offense no defense. Romonov does it all thats the difference.

Romonov will probably bolt to the KHL
That's why it's risky to draft a Russian early
Most teams know this

Am I a terrible homer by saying I wouldn’t want the Coyotes to trade Soderstrom for either Romanov or Sandin? Just talking long term, not best d in this tournament.
Yes I think so, to be fair though soderstrom looked amazing also for the Swedes, but Romanov and Sandin were objectively the two best defensemen in this tournament

It's been done before, I forget by who though.

Viacheslav Fetisov of the USSR is the only defenseman to win back-to-back Defenseman of the Tournament back in 1977 and 1978.

But Romanov becomes only the fourth defenseman to make it to the All-Star Team in back-to-back years:

Fetisov in 1977-1978
Risto Siltanen of Finland also in 1977-1978
Kenny Jonsson of Sweden in 1993-1994
Romanov in 2019-2020

Romanov, with both last year and this year's tournaments becomes the all-time leader in +/- of any Russian player in the history (all positions included). He finished with a +18 in 14 GP.

He also became the all-time leading scorer among all defensemen for Russia with 14 pts (2G, 12A) in 14 GP. Dmitri Orlov is second with 13 pts (1G, 12A) in 13 GP from his appearances in the 2010 and 2011 tournaments.

Hoglander was the most dominant and dangerous forward in the tournament. But the marginal call that sidelined him was his undoing.

Hard to disagree with any of the choices.
Goaltending and a forward position on the all-star team had potential options but overall i'd say they nailed it.

Exactly as I had guessed. I sort of wanted to get Zegras in there, but there wasn't room.

Not really no. Soderstrom is 18. If he's not in the NHL next year he probably outperforms both what those 2 guys did this year
