Sorry if this sounds one dimensional - Isn't Kessel used up, let alone lazy? Last I saw him, he looked lazy.

When he was young he was a burner for sure....I think he's lost 3 or so steps from the days when he'd just blast past the D on the wing and let loose a deadly wrister.

These days I see him as more of a PP specialist but apparently the numbers don't back that up. Most of his points in Ari came 5 on 5.

He also has a history of being a playoff performer.

I never really understood the hate for Kessel. Maybe I'm just ill informed but seems like dude just likes hot dogs and doesn't really hustle. Hes putting up points either way. I can see thinking he's been overpaid but he seems likable enough to me. But then I love/loved hamilton and pitkanen too
He also seems semi-psychotic...remember all the **** that used to go on between him and Malkin? (of course Malkin is semi-psychotic at times too so there's that)

I was just thinking of that but that could actually be maybe all Malkin. He and James Neal used to scream at each other while they were on the ice together. You could see and hear them during game play. Then they’d keep going on the bench.

Malkin appears to pull that sort of thing out of you. Phil has never appeared to even elevate his heartbeat at any other time.

I was going to school at UND watching Toews and Oshie play when he was playing for UM. Learned to hate him there. Never really subsided. Respect him though.

Phil Kessel baffles me. Somehow this guy not only played in the NHL, but he’s got a great shot at putting up 1000+ points and an outside chance at 500+ goals. It boggles the mind.

He's a Rongutan through a very poor-value trade precisely because he made it clear to Jets and everyone when Jets was shopping him around that he would re-sign long-term only with the Rongos.

At the time, his best friend Brady Skjei was on the team, and this was before the Canes essentially collected former Rangers like candy, albeit for unrelated reasons. Things change all the time in the NHL.

I like to tell people I have the body of a pro athlete. I just don’t specify that that pro athlete is Phil Kessel.

Truth is, hockey is primarily a skill game and you don't absolutely have to be an all-round phenomenal athlete in order to work those skills. Given strong enough abilities with skates and stick, and well-developed underlying musculature in specific parts of the body, someone with a dad bod can be an elite hockey player. This ain't basketball or soccer when it comes to pure athleticism.

NHL marketing office does a lot of work to pretend otherwise, but it's just a reality of the sport.

The best part is that this guy who you could fit two Kessels into of was once one of the premier offensive defensemen in the NHL.
