I like their game of waiver-wire Highlander.
Still confused how come they kept saying he would win but he died? Shouldn't they have been saying "There can be only Duncan!"?

In Hamilton’s case, I’d say he’s signed by the deadline or shipped out of town.
My biggest fear is losing Hamilton for nothing.

What's funny is to think about what would happen here on Forum #26 if management were to pull off the coup of not protecting Hamilton, allowing him to become a free agent, then re-sign him before he took three steps into the UFA pasture. It would be a move we'd all lose our minds over twice: at the deadline and on July 1. But it would be worth it just to watch the entire world (including ours!) burn. For me, at least...

If Canes do not extend or trade Dougie prior to the expansion draft...does RF select Dougie and back up the brinks truck?

It would be a bold move...but BMs happen every day.

I see what you did there.

To answer your question, I don't think RF does that. Maybe it will be different with an expansion team, but based on history, I still think he would prefer a young guy just on the cusp vs. a vet he has to back up the brinks truck to.

If Francis wants to back up a Brinks truck to Dougie, he'll do it on July 1 and get a player from Carolina as well. I don't see Francis passing on getting a young D with a few years of control out of Carolina.

If I remember from the last draft the expansion team gets a few days to discuss with pending UFAs and can then select/sign them as their pick. Or as @Chrispy said they can draft someone else, wait for UFA, and sign him (but then so can 30 other teams)

I believe it was 2-3 days prior to the draft they could negotiate.

In this scenario though, we would still have a week post expansion draft to sign Hamilton before he hit the market.

With that rule, they can negotiate with Hamilton and let them know what they could offer on July 1 via legal communication too. And then they can still sign another player off Carolina and take a swing at Hamilton on July 1.

Whenever July 1 is this year...

So I've been doing some back of the envelope calculations around the Canes salary structure. I've held for a long time that next season is the season of reckoning for the organization with regard to roster building. The addition of Skjei complicates things a bit, but not to the extent that I originally thought. However, I think the path forward requires some creativity and some acceptance.

My assumption is that Dzingel doesn't get re-signed and that Niederrieter, Trocheck, Skjei, and Gardiner are on the roster. According to CapFriendly, we've got $52.65 million invested in 12 players. No goalies, 7 forwards (Aho, Teravainen, Niederreiter, Trocheck, Staal, Fast, and Necas), and 5 defensemen (Slavin, Pesce, Gardiner, Skjei, and Fleury) make up that roster.

When I noodled with some salary figures, I went a little different route than most. I didn't try to sign either Svechnikov or Hamilton to max term contracts (or in Svech's case a 3 year bridge). Starting with Svech, I looked at doing something like a 2 year bridge at around $6.75 million per year. My thought is that with the shorter term, there's a bit more likelihood of a more reasonable outcome. It also gives Svech a chance to get to the "big money" a year sooner, if you will. My guess is that he'll command at least $9 million per at the end of that bridge.

With regard to Hamilton, I wonder if he'd entertain a shorter term deal, in this case 5 years for something like $8.25 million per year. My thought process here is that at the end of that deal he'll still only be 32 and have some miles left to go in his career, up to and even including the option of a longer term deal then.

All of that being said, it leaves the team with a little over $13 million to fill a minimum of 8 slots, but more likely 9 or 10 (2 goalies, 6 forwards, and 2 defenders). This almost assuredly prices guy like McGinn and Martinook out of the market, it might also price Foegele out of the market. It will require our depth to step up into significant roles albeit bottom 6 and 3rd pairing. It would also require a goalie tandem at about $5 million or so.

Just some food for thought.

@NotOpie

we may be the same person because I was just doing the same thing today with eerily similar dollar and contract figures for Svech and Dougie. Also, Im responding to your post in the camp thread to keep that from morphing into roster talk.

We have a very large number of possibilities for next season and the play by some of our guys will determine our course of action.

I think if Foegele takes another step forward and gets closer to surpasses / 20 goals then we should try to keep him over Nino. 4 years x 3 mil deal would be ideal for his skill level. Nino probably wouldnt be hard to move as long as he has a decent year on the top line. There will not be a lot of risk in his one year contract.

With that being said, if we kept Martinook at 1.5 mil for 2 years, Geekie at 2 years 1 million per, and add 2 offensive ELCs, we would have around 10 million of our goalies and any extra players we want.

I'm really curious how this next offseason is handled. The organization certainly values 'continuity of the program' so to speak, but we're looking at quite a few potential departures. This will be the last year of the "current group" and this summer will set a solid 3-year window of the next group. The good news is once Svech gets locked down, and hopefully Dougie as well, we're not going to be losing any of the truly important pieces.

Unless Skjei is awful the top-4 is good to go for a while, with plenty of solid depth guys pushing for spots. I don't expect we'll be paying Seattle to take Gards, maybe we can find a forward with a similar contract to swap. Goaltending...who knows. I'd guess Mrazek back on a similar deal while they hunt for an upgrade to Reims. But guys like Dzingle, Brock, Martinook, and Nino...I'd expect their time is about up.

I may be in the minority here but I'd probably look to move on from Foegs, especially if it could improve goaltending. I'm not high on his top-6 potential and a bit nervous about the kind of contract he'll be demanding. One option is using Seattle as a trading partner to facilitate some upgrades. I was playing around with the Cap Friendly expansion tool and their LW options are pretty terrible. Whether it's getting out from the last year of Nino's deal or getting some value for Foegs, that could be something to watch.

We had a French exchange student stay with us named Maxime.

I had a French exchange student stay in the same 3-room shared flat with me when I was going to university. The guy's name was Emmanuel Le[Something French].

Now I don't know how familiar everyone here is with the classics of 70's French softcore porn, but sharing flat with Emmanuelle was amusing.

I am and am not surprised Bean is on the Taxi squad. he seems ready like a taxi squad should be but he did say he would rather play everyday than be on the taxi squad.

Maybe he is on there until AHL season starts / Lajoie clears his quarantine to join the team.

Glad that they are able to hang out down there if/until their season starts in the CHL.
That could be a while for them to get good training time with Chicago and play against some bigger and smarter players. I believe the OHL and WHL dont have a start date yet although the WHL said they would have a 24 game season.

I cant find when AHL camp opens up. I see their season is supposed to start Feb 5th.

AHL has likely allowed age-group exemptions this season, at least until the non-Q parts of the CHL return to play. It'll be a great experience for the weenies.
The AHL has allowed it? you mean the CHL? The CHL is the one that has the agreement with the NHL to keep players 2 years post draft unless they make the roster.
