So I've been doing some back of the envelope calculations around the Canes salary structure. I've held for a long time that next season is the season of reckoning for the organization with regard to roster building. The addition of Skjei complicates things a bit, but not to the extent that I originally thought. However, I think the path forward requires some creativity and some acceptance.
My assumption is that Dzingel doesn't get re-signed and that Niederrieter, Trocheck, Skjei, and Gardiner are on the roster. According to CapFriendly, we've got $52.65 million invested in 12 players. No goalies, 7 forwards (Aho, Teravainen, Niederreiter, Trocheck, Staal, Fast, and Necas), and 5 defensemen (Slavin, Pesce, Gardiner, Skjei, and Fleury) make up that roster.
When I noodled with some salary figures, I went a little different route than most. I didn't try to sign either Svechnikov or Hamilton to max term contracts (or in Svech's case a 3 year bridge). Starting with Svech, I looked at doing something like a 2 year bridge at around $6.75 million per year. My thought is that with the shorter term, there's a bit more likelihood of a more reasonable outcome. It also gives Svech a chance to get to the "big money" a year sooner, if you will. My guess is that he'll command at least $9 million per at the end of that bridge.
With regard to Hamilton, I wonder if he'd entertain a shorter term deal, in this case 5 years for something like $8.25 million per year. My thought process here is that at the end of that deal he'll still only be 32 and have some miles left to go in his career, up to and even including the option of a longer term deal then.
All of that being said, it leaves the team with a little over $13 million to fill a minimum of 8 slots, but more likely 9 or 10 (2 goalies, 6 forwards, and 2 defenders). This almost assuredly prices guy like McGinn and Martinook out of the market, it might also price Foegele out of the market. It will require our depth to step up into significant roles albeit bottom 6 and 3rd pairing. It would also require a goalie tandem at about $5 million or so.
Just some food for thought.
