What's funny is to think about what would happen here on Forum #26 if management were to pull off the coup of not protecting Hamilton, allowing him to become a free agent, then re-sign him before he took three steps into the UFA pasture. It would be a move we'd all lose our minds over twice: at the deadline and on July 1. But it would be worth it just to watch the entire world (including ours!) burn. For me, at least...

If Canes do not extend or trade Dougie prior to the expansion draft...does RF select Dougie and back up the brinks truck?

It would be a bold move...but BMs happen every day.

If Francis wants to back up a Brinks truck to Dougie, he'll do it on July 1 and get a player from Carolina as well. I don't see Francis passing on getting a young D with a few years of control out of Carolina.

As I said earlier, waiting until after the expansion draft to sign Dougie seems really risky to me. If Hamilton comes back close to where he left off pre-injury he's arguably one of the top 5 d-men in the league. If so, I could see RF gassing up the Brinks truck if he had an opportunity to build his D around a 27 yo star defender. I'm sure RF will be building for a strong future (like he did here), but after Vegas' success I bet the expectations for an expansion team don't allow years of sucking before they're reasonably competitive.

And I could see RF putting together a pretty attractive pitch, too. Seems like the Krack could afford to pay more for what would be a cornerstone D-man than most other NHL teams. And they could sell the idea of a leadership role in developing the culture on what is essentially a team blank slate.

Sure, it would be sweet if we got an extra protection spot but still signed Dougie as a UFA, but I wouldn't take that chance.

I had a French exchange student stay in the same 3-room shared flat with me

This started out so promising.

The guy's name was Emmanuel Le[Something French].

And then I was disappointed

Now I don't know how familiar everyone here is with the classics of 70's French softcore porn, but sharing flat with Emmanuelle was amusing.

now it’s promising again.

Cost of living in Raleigh is ~40% less in Raleigh vs Seattle. Weather is nicer as well.

We had a French exchange student stay with us named Maxime.

It wasn’t over Christmas in the 80’s was it?

As a Raleigh native who is just over a year into living on the other side of the bay from Seattle, I disagree on the weather. Rain is far superior to humidity.
You’re killing me, that’s a move i’ve wanted to make for forever. Anywhere PNW, really. I’ve got family in east BC so i’ve gotten out to Vancouver a few times, just the kind of place that soothes the soul.

To each his own. Raleigh native who went to school before air condtioning was everywhere, I'll take a couple months of high humidity over 150+ days of rain. Have a cousin in Olympia who disagrees with me tho.

@NotOpie

we may be the same person because I was just doing the same thing today with eerily similar dollar and contract figures for Svech and Dougie. Also, Im responding to your post in the camp thread to keep that from morphing into roster talk.

We have a very large number of possibilities for next season and the play by some of our guys will determine our course of action.

I think if Foegele takes another step forward and gets closer to surpasses / 20 goals then we should try to keep him over Nino. 4 years x 3 mil deal would be ideal for his skill level. Nino probably wouldnt be hard to move as long as he has a decent year on the top line. There will not be a lot of risk in his one year contract.

With that being said, if we kept Martinook at 1.5 mil for 2 years, Geekie at 2 years 1 million per, and add 2 offensive ELCs, we would have around 10 million of our goalies and any extra players we want.

Agree on Foegele; Rod likes him a lot, but unless somebody moves out, the best we probably can do is $3.5 million and it feels like he'll value himself a little higher than that. I do believe, if he can control his spastic side, he could end up a 2nd liner.

No way Marty takes a $1.5 million deal IMO. Despite my contention on another thread that RBA is reluctant to lean on rookies, that doesn't mean he won't work them into the line up. My guess is his preference is for 1 or 2 per season....even then, I'm thinking he'll want them to marinate in the A for a season or two.

Don't think we're going to get Svech on any AAV that starts with a 6, no matter the term.

You may be correct, but I think Barzal is a good comp. Similar offensive output (albeit more assists and less goals) and plays what is generally considered a higher value position. Also, if Svech takes the 2 year deal, he's more likely to forgo a bit of dough for the higher value win in 2023-24 and beyond. I think between Dougie and Svech, I'd be surprised if the team wasn't shooting for around $15 million for both.

And they could sell the idea of a leadership role in developing the culture on what is essentially a team blank slate.

If Hamilton is considering the value of the Canes vs. the Kraken, the two things I believe that are of value to him are the lower pressure nature of this market and the nearness to contention. Also, I'm not sure he sees himself in a leadership role that you describe....although I am only guessing here.

@NotOpie while I understand that Marty would be taking less money, he earned his 2 million because he had 15 goals, 2 seasons ago. last season he had 2, 4 goal pace with similar games. Tbh, that level of production is a below 1 million type deal. I believe he’ll have an average year for himself and we add a little more money because of the leadership value. Unless he gives us 15+ goals again, 1.5 million is definitely possible. I don’t know that he would get 1.5 on the market, in covid times.

So who is our extra man not on the taxi squad?

Looks like Bean is the #7 D. Bean on the taxi squad is a salary cap move, as he is waiver exempt and can move freely between the taxi squad and the roster as needed.

Without a #7, you can move Bean onto the roster for a day to give a D the day off, and then move Bean back as soon as allowed.

Carl Soderberg is twice as good as Martinook in all areas of the ice and just had to take a $1 million x 1 year deal.

Martinook is probably more of a PTO type in this flat cap environment. $700k type deal like Spezza or Perry.
