What Fleury needs right now is consistent minutes and remit in the NHL to really figure out the intricacies of NHL play you only get from experience. He's good enough to sleepwalk AHL comp by just letting his natural talent take over, but he isn't there yet at the NHL level (and i doubt he ever will be- not that he won't be an NHLer, but he won't effortless crush minutes in the big leagues like he does effortlessly in Charlotte).

Fleury is in a weird place where he needs to play more minutes to gain confidence and get better, but he's not going to get those minutes because of the 5-6 guys in front of him are just plain better. The team isn't good enough to give him extra minutes as a luxury item and not bad enough to give him extra minutes as a necessity.

I really just think we should trade him. I'm not even down on him, it's just really hard to see a path forward.

Point of reference -- Fleury is 23 years old.

Players within 6 months of Fleury's birthday, or older:

Thomas Chabot
Vince Dunn
Brandon Carlo
Nikita Zadorov
Shea Theodore
Neal Pionk
Darnell Nurse
Noah Hanifin
Travis Sanheim
Ivan Provorov
Josh Morrissey

Take anyone on that list and it's completely reasonable to say, "yeah he's good now, but give it a couple of years before you judge what he'll become". And if you give it a couple of years, you've got guys like Seth Jones and Colton Parayko and Jaccob Slavin, where we're still sitting here saying "wow, he's grown into quite the player, but give it a couple more years...".

Fleury's a borderline NHL'er today at age 23. He's not as good as our top-6... because our top-6 are all top-4 guys in disguise. But it's completely reasonable to think that in a couple of years Fleury will be a solid bottom-6'er on any team in the NHL, and in a couple of years after that he might peak out as the defensive conscience on a 2nd pair. That would be a completely normal growth curve without any optimism involved. Why give up on that at age 23, when he's cost-controlled and we have an opportunity to lock him in for a chunk of his career at a very low cap hit? This is like having a dependable backup QB, even if you don't expect him to play a huge role just keep re-signing the guy on the cheap and don't invite the headache of having to replace him.

That's kinda where I'm at too. I don't really want him to be traded, but I don't see the path to him improving here. It's plainly obvious Rod doesn't trust him, and it's not going to help his confidence or experience playing 8 minutes a night scared to make a mistake because you'll be stapled to the bench again.

He needs to be in a situation he can play more and looser, but the Canes just can't provide that, so it might be better moving on

This is exactly it. I think he's a fringe NHLer now, that's not an indication of what I think of his future. The only reason I'm slightly down on him is that he's been given the chance to prove himself as a full timer, and he hasn't. Since when do you need to give a guy 15+ minutes a night to adjust to the NHL? They've tried to bring him along slowly and sheltered him as much as possible and he still hasn't gotten over the hump. There's just too many guys ahead and behind him to hold his hand much longer.

Yeah, but here's the thing. You *can't* play that way. Even if you're playing eight minutes a night, you have to play all of them with the mindset you're the best player on Earth. Confidence comes *first* not opportunity. These guys have big egos for a reason. You *need* a big ego to be successful at this level. You need to be supremely confident every second of every shift, even if you're faking it until you make it. Haydn doesn't have that.

Someone has to go once TVR is ready.

the 6 day break between the @Ana and @CBJ games? I assume TVR will get his AHL time in by then.

Fleury isn’t as bad as everyone makes him out. He doesn’t look like a 7th OA pick yet.

I don’t want Fleury to go but the team would get a better offer for him than TVR at this point.

They should just keep Fleury, really. Canes have been really lucky the last couple of seasons with injuries, but you just never know. Who knows if one of our guys goes down tomorrow with a season-ending injury?

The likelihood that he makes it through waivers is really low. We don’t have the cap space to afford him and a 2 million TVR.
