Well, I met a lot of Canadians in Austin, seems y'all get tired of snow after a while.

On the other hand, Trump is probably the best barrier we could enact to discourage Canadians from migrating here.
Funny enough, my Aunt just spent the winter in Texas down by Harlingen.....and just this week they made the RV trek back up to Canada.

You're trying to make something that is opaque appear transparent.

An example would be a general ordering 10k men to launch an attack that he knows they will suffer 40%+ casualties but will allow a flanking attack that will potentially save 20k lives. Should the leader of the 10k men say no?

The virus on the carrier is in a totally different class than normal military actions. I respect the Captain for putting his men before his career and as I said earlier we don't know if he sent classified requests that were denied and felt the need to go public for crew safety.

A Captain cannot broadcast every time there is a problem on his vessel because that is very valuable information to our adversaries which they could exploit. That carrier in particular is one of two currently stationed to deter Chinese aggression in the region.

This is one of those situations where the media should shut up and wait for further information.
Jumping to conclusions without knowing the complete history and why things were done (did his superior have legitimate reasons for denying his request or was he grossly incompetent or under pressure from above to cover it up?) is foolhardy.

One of the unfortunate things about the news cycle is the need to jump to conclusions, it was bad with print journalism but has become far worse with cable news. This is why I don't fret over being "up to date," it's often illuminating to be a few days behind the news cycle and then see how it plays out with emotional distancing. The followup stories often paint a far more complete picture.

You're doing the thing that makes just about any discussion of the Israel/Palestine situation impossible. Where you conflate any criticism of government action with somehow being critical of the nationality as a whole, so it devolves into stuff like "Oh you don't like the Dahiya Doctrine? You must be a big old fan of Himmler," or "You think Hamas encouraging children to carry out attacks is bad? You must want to see Palestinians genocided."

not at all.

Here are some universal truths.

1. It is absolutely impossible to get the truth of these nations. China, Russia, North Korea.

Because 1 is true. now we are allowed to Speculate with impunity in regards to these nations.

Speculation is not doing anyone any good at this current moment. IN fact what we have seen over the past 10 year is a the ability of conservative news to distract their viewers with arbitrary stories. That is fine and dandy during the course of a normal non election year. IT is not f***ing okay with when we have 1000 plus American's dying each day due to lack of leadership at the highest levels of Government.

If you want to talk about sports as a distraction from the sad reality that we are living in currently go right ahead because we all need to take care of ourselves mentally. If you however want to discuss current world events and bring up topics that serve as fodder for the conservative news media as a distraction of what is currently happening here then I am going to f***ing call you out every single time.

BTW here are the conservative news distractions for the coming weeks. China, Pelosi, something AOC said, Liberals distracting Trump , etc etc. Guess what those have nothing to do with our current situation.

Funny how that is forgotten....but not surprising given who it is.
You keep talking like that and we're going to take Ontario, BC, Quebec, Alberta(they have oil), Manitoba and probably a few more. We'll let you keep Nunavut and the Northwest Territories:sarcasm:

To be fair, China is the source of the virus, due to their refusal to shutdown their live animal markets (probably b/c senior party members believe in traditional animal cures, China is a big reason Rhinos are endangered, those fools haven't figured out Viagra works better than Rhino horns), and the Chinese handling of the outbreak certainly accelerated the spread of the virus worldwide. And there is increasing evidence that China is lying through their teeth about the # of infections and fatalities, robbing the world of needed information to combat the pandemic.

This doesn't absolve the current Administration of their gross incompetence, but it is fair game for investigative reporting.

Again remember universal truth 1.

I completely disagree with your premise that China's handling of the outbreak impacted the world's ability to take this virus seriously.

Subject: What I am doing for the upcoming COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic
Information:
Corona virus:
Dear Family and Friends, as some of you may recall, when I was a professor of pathology at the University of California San Diego, I was one of the first molecular virologists in the world to work on coronaviruses (the 1970s). I was the first to demonstrate the number of genes the virus contained. Since then, I have kept up with the coronavirus field and its multiple clinical transfers into the human population (e.g., SARS, MERS), from different animal sources.
The current projections for its expansion in the US are only probable, due to continued insufficient worldwide data, but it is most likely to be widespread by mid to late March and April.
Here is what I have done and the precautions that I take and will take. These are the same precautions I currently use during our influenza seasons, except for the mask and gloves.:
1) NO HANDSHAKING! Use a fist bump, slight bow, elbow bump, etc.
2) Use ONLY your knuckle to touch light switches. elevator buttons, etc.. Lift the gasoline dispenser with a paper towel or use a disposable glove.
3) Open doors with your closed fist or hip - do not grasp the handle with your hand, unless there is no other way to open the door. Especially important on bathroom and post office/commercial doors.
4) Use disinfectant wipes at the stores when they are available, including wiping the handle and child seat in grocery carts.
5) Wash your hands with soap for 10-20 seconds and/or use a greater than 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer whenever you return home from ANY activity that involves locations where other people have been.
6) Keep a bottle of sanitizer available at each of your home's entrances. AND in your car for use after getting gas or touching other contaminated objects when you can't immediately wash your hands.
7) If possible, cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue and discard. Use your elbow only if you have to. The clothing on your elbow will contain infectious virus that can be passed on for up to a week or more!
What I have stocked in preparation for the pandemic spread to the US:
1) Latex or nitrile latex disposable gloves for use when going shopping, using the gasoline pump, and all other outside activity when you come in contact with contaminated areas.
Note: This virus is spread in large droplets by coughing and sneezing. This means that the air will not infect you! BUT all the surfaces where these droplets land are infectious for about a week on average - everything that is associated with infected people will be contaminated and potentially infectious. The virus is on surfaces and you will not be infected unless your unprotected face is directly coughed or sneezed upon. This virus only has cell receptors for lung cells (it only infects your lungs). The only way for the virus to infect you is through your nose or mouth via your hands or an infected cough or sneeze onto or into your nose or mouth.
2) Stock up now with disposable surgical masks and use them to prevent you from touching your nose and/or mouth (We touch our nose/mouth 90X/day without knowing it!). This is the only way this virus can infect you - it is lung-specific. The mask will not prevent the virus in a direct sneeze from getting into your nose or mouth - it is only to keep you from touching your nose or mouth.
3) Stock up now with hand sanitizers and latex/nitrile gloves (get the appropriate sizes for your family). The hand sanitizers must be alcohol-based and greater than 60% alcohol to be effective.
4) Stock up now with zinc lozenges. These lozenges have been proven to be effective in blocking coronavirus (and most other viruses) from multiplying in your throat and nasopharynx. Use as directed several times each day when you begin to feel ANY "cold-like" symptoms beginning. It is best to lie down and let the lozenge dissolve in the back of your throat and nasopharynx. Cold-Eeze lozenges is one brand available, but there are other brands available.
I, as many others do, hope that this pandemic will be reasonably contained, BUT I personally do not think it will be. Humans have never seen this snake-associated virus before and have no internal defense against it. Tremendous worldwide efforts are being made to understand the molecular and clinical virology of this virus. Unbelievable molecular knowledge about the genomics, structure, and virulence of this virus has already been achieved. BUT, there will be NO drugs or vaccines available this year to protect us or limit the infection within us. Only symptomatic support is available.
I hope these personal thoughts will be helpful during this potentially catastrophic pandemic. Good luck to all of us, Dad/Jim.

I agree there is an unnatural number of deaths in that family but who goes canoeing in the ocean on a windy day with a child?
It was the Chesapeake Bay and they were going after a ball that went in the bay...makes no sense

Back when our 2 week quarantine started I got us a large food supply so I only ended up needing to hit the store once in the last 15 days. This was still when hoarding was going strong so a lot of selection was limited. But all the absolute fools living here ignored the canned corned beef hash. I've eaten so much of it and it's truly a golden age of my life.
Good call! I only started eating it again within the last year or two (Hormel/Mary Kitchen brand). I actually liked the MRE version when I was in the Army 25 years ago, saw it on the shelf one day, and bought two cans. I only eat it about once every month or two though. I fry it, adding in a little Worcestershire sauce, pepper, and diced onions, and eat it over toast like SOS.

I find this R0 stuff really interesting, the number that one person will go on to infect. Measles is as high as 18:

Day 2: 18
Day 3: 324
Day 4: 5832
Day 5: 104,976
Day 6: 1, 899,000

Day 7, 1 week in: 34,000,000

This may be a good practice run for when we get a flu strain that has an R0 of 4-6 and mortality rate of 40%.

China needs to change its ways now. Or the world should force them to do so.

it doesn't matter where the virus starts. If an outbreak like that occurs it is game over.

You can have them!
Wait I want Nova Scotia too. I'm sick of waiting for the Lagina's to get all those pesky permits. You'll love Nunavut and the best part is in 50 years it will be just like living at the Jersey shore:thumbu:

How far should a citizen want the members of their military to extrapolate the concept of following orders and adhering to the chain of command before they should use their moral conscious and decision making?
I don’t want a private in the military to ignore an order from a corporal. Morals should only come into account when an unlawful order is given. Period.

I’m considered pretty far right by people on here but I don’t know anyone that reads Breitbart or thinks Alex Jones is anything but a right wing version of Stephen Colbert via the daily show, aka an infotainment comedic character.

What a brilliant application. We have kept it simple, just an egg on top. I'll add some Tabasco. In that form it's best to use a bowl to eat because it just works better than a plate, and more of it gets yolked.

Today I used my homemade pickled hot peppers and some of the juice. Holy shit.

China kept the virus hidden since at least November. You don’t think that a few month head start, before millions of people fled wuhan, would have made things different? You can’t be serious.
