McAvoy has some limited tools... but a few of them can be improved. his current game is extremely strong in several important catagories

the difference at this point between becoming a drew doughty type or a mattias ohlund type is probably just health/and attitude

the really great greats... have a hunger/desire that transends the mere mortals. its what elevates guys to the hall of fame level. that and staying healthy

theres soooooo many guys that come into the league and you hear they are the next bobby orr or whatever... I think I heard around 8 guys called the next bobby orr… peter svboda and jay boumeister and oleg teverdovsky just a few I remember off the top of my head... and obviously these guys never became the next bobby orr.

so now... its mcavoys turn... and you are the one asking his potential. all we can say for certain is hes already demonstrated the ability to be an impact top dman playing against good competition. hes already proven if he stays healthy and motivated we can count on having an above average top pair dman in this kid

what happens above and beyond this... none of us will know until time plays out. a lot of great dmen come out of left field.. guys like zdeno chara play until their mid to later 20's and haven't shown how great they might be.

one of the rules of thumb that goes on about dmen… is you don't know what you have in any of them until they play at least 200 games.

so its just too early to predict the hights that McAvoy might reach if we are lucky

Great post.

I didn`t have the opportunity (still don`t) to watch a ton of Doughty`s games as a rookie but from those I did see that year, CM reminds me quite a bit of DD. I can`t recall how many pts Doughty put up in his first season but I do recall reading/hearing that the Kings were very encouraged by his first year, had areas he needed to improve on but overall, they believed the kid had all the tools necessary to become what we see now from him. Again, don`t want to get too far ahead of myself but the key, as you mentioned will be health and attitude or drive to push himself to be the best.

Many here know far more about CM than this fan does but the impression I get is he`s a kid who is very coachable and is a hard worker both on and off the ice. Fingers crossed. Lots to be pumped about after his first full season, real shame the kid had setbacks with the heart procedure and injury but once he took the ton of tape off in the TBay series, he started to immediately play better

Hello bruins fan! This is my first post for this bruins forum. I heard the bruins main goal is to add a top six winger and it didn't work with JT and Kovi. I'm just curious how they went to plan b to add defensemen depth for recent acquisitions and trade our defensemen prospect to add a to add top six winger in the trade deadline that we can acquire a player that we don't know. However, bruins needs to plan to get rid of Backes and other guys that we didn't need and I want to use young players coming to 3rd or 4th line roster. I don't think its realistic to trade Panarian, Simmonds, Patches, etc for right now because we are not desperate. If the Bruins want to be aggressive but do the right thing like the celtics or they can turn into Toronto maple leafs to add players to the team with salary cap and locker room issues. My goal as a fan is that I want to grow our young player depth and versatile players to be cup contender in next 4-10 years like the Red sox and Celtics doing for now. This Bruins team is a very unique and special hockey team with good veteran core so that the young players can learn to play like a veteran nhl with very good salary cap. Its hard to trade in the deadline because most nhl team don't have salary cap and some teams are greedy. We are lucky to have Don Sweeney as a our Bruins GM. The Boston Bruins plan "Let our young players to develop and learn with a great veteran core who been in the nhl in a long time and hard worker like Bergeron, Chara, Marchand, Krejci and won the Stanley cup in 2011 with leadership, grit, and toughness". If the bruins accomplish the plan with young players who have big heart like Jake debrusk, we could be cup contender for 3 or 4 to 10 years!

What a wall of text.

Also, Bruins should look to take Jake Virtanen off Vans hands.

Underperforming 6th overall pick from 2014 who plays RW. Has speed, a goal scoring pedigree that he hasn't translated to the NHL yet. Also is not afraid of the physical side of the game. Invites contact all the time.

Could be a RW debrusk. I wonder if a swap of one of our D prospects like Zboril would do it.

It hasn't translated because he has a potato for a brain. He's more energetic and less skilled version of Jimmy Hayes.

I don’t know, he hasn’t exactly lit up the AHL either. Senyshyn has better numbers than Virtanen.

He's playing in Vancouver. That's already a handicap with the way that organization has been run the last few years.

He's definitely the type of player that has the tools, just hasn't put it together yet. There was a RW we got from Van that they gave up on that turned out pretty good. Can't remember the name though.

Virtanen is a guy my radar tingles for. We got connections to benning. A trade should be possible. We have good history trading for big rw from vancouver.

It just seems like too big a risk to give up a good asset like Zboril for this guy when we have our own RW project who put up almost double the points in the AHL.

When it comes to our prospect depth, we are good with defensemen, weak on RW. If it were me, I'd make the swap. Not sure if Van would even be interested in that though.

We have a lot of good young forwards who can be top six this season. We could trade our young defensemen for a top six veteran winger but we have to get rid of backes. I remember the bruins trying to trade Gabriel Landeskog. Im looking to find a 23-27 years old top six winger who have very good leadership and caring about young players. I want to add similar players in prime like Travis Zajac, Jamie Langenbrunner and Zach Parise to add our team. We don't need better prospect winger.

Agree to disagree. I think we have plenty of young guys that are either natural RW like Bjork and Senyshyn, or guys that could play their off-wing that have all shown more at the pro level than Virtanen.

Zboril fresh out of juniors put up as many points in the AHL as Virtanen after 65 NHL games. With Chara retiring after this season and needing size on LD, I’d keep our smooth skating LD prospect that has some grit.

There is no way in hell I would trade Zboril for Virtanen in a one for one swap. Zboril is putting things together NOW. He has worked hard on every aspect of his game and looks like he is ready to take big step in Providence next year. Virtanen hasn't put anything together yet. I would take the risk and bring on Virtanen, because he could still turn things around, but I am not giving VAN anything more than a late pick or a B level prospect.

I would take the risk too, but I don't think Vancouver lets him go for so little, at least not yet. They've got to try to salvage something from that pick. He's still young enough that they can hope for better so I imagine flipping him for a 4th rounder, or a Cameron Hughes won't do it.

Vancouver probably looks at him like we look at Krejci. More important to the team that owns him than he will be in a trade. The best scenario for them is to ride out his development. Trading him for a late pick/B level prospect doesn't really do that much good.

I think in a 1 for 1 swap, we overpay with a guy like Zboril. Zboril has shown more so far in his pro career, so that may make Vancouver more open to trading JV away.

But from what I have seen of Virtanen, I would sacrifice some of that Defensive depth to bring in a guy who could become a permanent fixture in the middle 6 if he pans out. The tools he has you can't really teach. I think he just needs a change of scenery.

It's a dice roll no doubt, but with the prospects we have on defense, I think its one we can afford to make.

He has?

One guy has 140 NHL games under his belt.

The other has zero and is just 6 months younger.

Pretty safe bet to say Virtanen has "shown more" (whatever that means) than Zboril has at the pro level.

Now will Virtanen ever be what people thought coming off 45 goals in the WHL in his draft year? Maybe not. But he has certainly shown more than a guy who hasn't even pushed for a job in training camp yet, let alone play an actual NHL game.

I'm just not sure a Virtanen/Zboril swap makes sense for the Bruins. I'd rather they keep their 3 darts (Vaak/Zboril/Lauzon) at LD with the hopes that at least one of them pans out to be a Top 4 LD down the road.

I think that would be a trade for the sake of making a trade. Unless the Bruins see something really special in him, I think we have enough winger prospects, I'd rather keep the lotto tickets on D and hope one of them pans out. I see defense as the spot we need the best luck over wingers.

Still, I wouldn’t trade a defenseman who put up as many points in the AHL right out of juniors than Virtanen did with 65 NHL games. The only thing he’s shown so far is that he can’t produce at the professional level yet.

Add to that Zboril was getting better as the season went on and is trending up, the trade is an easy pass. Vancouver wouldn’t accept what isn’t consider fair value, so I don’t think he’ll be traded.

One guy plays on a team that has missed the playoffs for a few years, one guy plays for a team that hopes to be a contender. There are more chances for a young guy to get a full time roster spot when the season isn't/hasn't resulted in a playoff spot. Zboril on the Canucks probably would've seen ice time given the state of that team. Not to mention a forward prospect sees NHL time earlier than D prospects on average.

That was not a well thought out take by you.
