I hate this is going to be on the books til 2028. That sucks!!!

I guess they see the rebuild being another +8 more years. Also sounds like the Ilitches are pinching pennies. I don't get a good feeling about this.

I know Yzerman said "be patient", but 8 more years is going to suck!
2026, and $1.1M of dead space isn't going to hamper the team. There are teams that have won the Cup with more dead cap space.

It's not my money, so it is easy for me to say the alternative was better. Ilitches have every right to pinch pennies. I don't have to like it.

It is 1 million per year. What the hell are you on about?

It dwindles away quickly, especially in 6 years when you're trying to beef up the roster and have no money. That measly 1 million could be all the difference (the league is tight, every advantage matters now). Not worth the risk. In 3 years it would have all been dissolved and timing wise, DRWs should be about to start their upswing. Now they are chained to longer term.

I don't like buyouts that exceed more than a few years. Especially when his contract was set to expire before the rebuild was over.

yeah, Weiss’s buyout really prevented them from doing anything.

They were routinely “capped out” and yet had money to go after Stamkos (he ended up not taking their call, but they had the money). This is being angry about a move to be angry about a move. This is one ELC that will be on their books. Seriously, chill out. Obviously you don’t go crazy buying a bunch of guys out... but one buyout like this is literally nothing and will harm nothing

I'm chill. It's not even my money. However, if Ilich penny pinching wasn't the issue, then I think it was a stupid short sighted move by Yzerman.

But from a business (money savings) standpoint, I 100% get it.

I guess I just don’t understand how it is short sighted. Abdelkader is bad and takes a roster spot that can be left open for a young player to earn now. We get two million plus in cap room for the next three years so we could more easily handle a couple ELC raises if we decided to go ham in the open market. If it was more than an ELC worth of dead cap we had in years 4-6, I would think differently. If Abdelkader wasn’t completely washed, I’d have a different opinion. The Wings have had literally 10 million burn a hole in their purse with Zetterberg and Franzen’s LTIR checks.

And in a business point of view... they pay less money to Abdelkader during the flat cap years and have three million to pay him once fans are back in a big way

If they're cutting costs, gotta wonder if they decide not to offer contracts to Erne, Perlini, and Bowey since they had one way contracts. Also if the AHL doesn't play, it makes them that much more useless.

Abby will likely go to the KHL or try to get a vet spot in the AHL.
He can barely skate. He looked OK the first few games, then slowed down every game. His legs are shot, he's done and he probably knew it mid season.

If his legs can't hold up for more than a dozen games, it's probably in his best interest to retire anyways. Sucks not to be able to walk. My knee pops out of place a couple times a year....
