does it matter ? Everyone is getting covid. Literally we will all get it soon enough.

You know that's not true, right?

There are places with different policies and corresponding higher and lower death rates (not linear).

I know it sounds scary but...its reality. look at the numbers everywhere. Everyone will get this virus.

I'm not scared at all. Had Covid last week and have recovered.

Look at Hong Kong, their population is 7.39m, they have a 7-day average of 11 cases per day. They were the second country to detect an Omicron case (and contained it to two travellers).

NOTE: I'm not saying I would rather be in Hong Kong, I'm just saying different places have different strategies with significantly different results.

What is considered successful will vary for each person and what they consider a priority.

Glad you’re recovered!

if you believe a Chinese regimented country like Hong Kong that has 7 million people in it only have 11 cases per day …. Well then …. Nobody can help you.

She’s not applying for the sports psychologists role, mate.

I think it’s pretty telling people will brush off her education. So many college players that go to Ivy League schools choose those schools not for the hockey but for the education. There were likely better hockey choices for her, but she went to Harvard- good for her.

Read the thread if you’re going to reply, at no point have I stated that she couldn’t be a good candidate for a position with the Canucks.

I know people who live there.

They tell me there is very little if any Covid infection in the community. I have no reason not to believe them.

That being said, they have some pretty brutal rules when it comes to entering and leaving the country (two week, no joke, hotel quarantine, strictly enforced, not allowed to leave the hotel room).

I think that's the point, they don't need to do that, just like nobody needs to, and this they won't.

They are simply on a different strategy.

There's more then one way to manage the situation beyond just what we are doing here.

For a good example, look at what happened to our prospect, Patrick McNally: drafted in 2010, went to Harvard, got caught up in the cheating scandal, suspended for a year, never really recovered. Not sure if he ended up completing his degree, but it shows that Harvard doesn't mess around.

Speaking of McNally, amazingly he's still playing ECHL hockey.

absolutely. china is different.

they have vaccines much less effective than the mrna vaccines at reducing disease severity. their health care system is less able to treat covid infections either on a technological or per capita basis. they also have a population living in far more dense conditions where covid would spread easily. so if they let covid run it would kill a lot of people.

"luckily "they are a police state so they can use draconian measures to control things.

Open up a Canadian Passport application and see if Hong Kong is listed as a "Country" in the Place of Birth column. :sarcasm:

it just asks you to list your city and country of birth. if you were born in hong kong after 1997, that would read "hong kong, china" because hong kong is part of china, or you could put kowloon, china if you wanted to be cheeky. if you were born prior to 1997 the "country" was british hong kong, but i think a lot of people would just put hong kong, hong kong.

I was referring to the fillable form that you can fill out and apply for a Canadian Passport. There is a drop down menu for "Country" in the place of birth section.

If using Hong Kong as my example forced me into a conversation about China and freedom and all kinds of other bullshit that you seem to want to discuss, use Japan instead...god forbid you actually decide to engage in a real discussion about different countries having different policies which have led to different results (which was the entire point).

that is kind of a fun list. the free city of danzig has not existed since 1939 but there it is. also separate country listings for kowloon, and hainan island also. are those separate countries? also for corsica and sicily,. not countries either.

sounds like they diplomatically humour a few folks because they are diplomats.

anyway, hong kong was a country before 1997. i imagine some stubborn folks when filling in passports still would call it a country even if born after that. it would be interesting to know what the policy is for what actually appears on passports. my guess would be they list hong kong as the city and say nothing as to

what i posted was a 100% factually correct response to a subject you brought up. i was agreeing with you that china is different and accurately pointing out how it is different. i have no interest at all in initiating a conversation with you about the other topics you have brought up just now, but i do like to report accurate factual information about topics being discussed here so, since you brought up china, and the differences in their covid response, i provided some accurate factual information about china's different covid response

are we ok?

There are also some old systems in place that needs updating. In the US, they still use First Name, First Initial, Last Name so J.T. Miller's ID card in the States probably says "Jonathan T Miller."

We are good.

My initial response was to a poster saying we will all get Covid, with the implication that it is inevitable.

I was just letting him know that I do not believe it is inevitable as some places are taking different apporaches, such as Hong Kong for example where there is almost no community spread.

To follow-up on what you discussed, I do believe the vaccination rate in Hong Kong is quite low relative to here but the citizens do have access to the Pfizer vaccine - I feel like you threw a lot of China facts at me when I brought up Hong Kong and didn't really see the relevance relative to the conversation I was having.

Hong Kong exists as a Special Administrative Region controlled by The People's Republic of China and enjoys its own limited autonomy as defined by the Basic Law. The principle of “one country, two systems” allows for the coexistence of socialism and capitalism under “one country,” which is mainland China.

Decided to look at the standings this morning...and we are much closer to the playoffs than I thought. Obviously still a hill to climb but all the teams we are chasing are just as "blah" as we are. Feels like it'll be between us, Oilers, and the Jets for that final spot.
