Because Matthews got injured and isn’t sniffing 50 in 50

I hope that's not the case.

Not that any of us really expect him to do it and if he keeps pace I'm sure Pastrnak will get plenty of his own threads in a few weeks but it's nice to see a 'last man standing' and still be in the hunt at 16 games. Would be nice to see him pot a pair tonight and be right on pace.

Hopefully Ovechkin pots a hat-trick today and gets close also.

Thanks for the head's up. I went by what the boxscore initially said as I'm unable to watch right now. I see they changed it DeBrusk. :/

Would be interesting to see if he tries, given I recall him explicitly saying it’s 50 on the team’s first 50 in this when he was updating

The Maple Leafs have, which is what matters in a 50 in 50.

Wait what? You can only score in games you play. 50 goals in 50 gp is the barometer as far as i can tell. And no I don't expect matthews to come anywhere close to this..

Of course it matters unofficially.

If Matthews can pull out 50-in-50 in his own games this season, after injury and all, nobody would nitpick too hard about value of the achievement, and it not being valid and legitimate 50-in-50. I think that it would be more valuable thing than achieving proper 50-in-50, in given circumstances.

At least I would hype Matthews to the no limits, if he could/can make it. Hell yeah, even if he would score "only" 40G this seasons, it would be incredible achievement.

The way the league tracks the record is 50 team games.

See Cam Neely’s 93-94 season for reference.

He scored 50 goals in his own first 44 games but the league doesn’t consider him a 50 in 50 player because his team played more than 50 games when he scored his 5oth goal.

Only five players -- Maurice Richard, Mike Bossy, Wayne Gretzky (three times), Mario Lemieux and Brett Hull (twice) -- scored 50 goals within their team's first 50 games, while a few others (Lemieux, Jari Kurri, Alexander Mogilny), like Neely, netted 50 in 50 or fewer games played.

Whole 50-in-50 thing made perfect sense when regular season was 50GP long. Immediately when it ceased to be that, also 50-in-50 stat became irrational and arbitrary in traditional sense, and thus obsolete.

Why not 50-in-50 in last 50 games of 82GP season?

Why not 50-in-50 starting from a team's game number #13?

Why not in any 50 games period of a season for a player?

...and why not 50-in-50 for 50 consecutive career games of a player played over two different seasons?

Considering that league scoring tends to be on higher level on average during starts of seasons, later 50-in-50 in whatever set of 50GP is more valuable, and I think more and more so toward the end of a season.

Essentially 50-in-50 is historical remnant measure, achievement and stat for achieving the GPG in the league where regular season was 50 games long (as mentioned above already), when the number of games in a regular season then have changed due expansions, and re-scheduling, also that GPG stat/achievement should've changed too: 80-in-80 for 80GP long season, 84-in-84 for 84GP season... also for lockout shorted season 1994: 48-in-48 for 48GP.

NHL didn't change the definition of stat and thus it became irrational. Like scoring 50-in-50 by a player in any 50 games long period would be someway worse achievement that doing that in the team's first 50 games in a season.

It's entirely other topic then does anybody ever achieve such feat in any of it's variations anymore, without radical changes to how hockey is played.

Does it really matter how a player scores 50 in 50? I mean do any of you think any different of a player that scores 25 in 25, misses 10 due to injury and then does another 25 in 25 vs one that does it in consecutive team games?
