Looking at the standings over the last 2 seasons, I noticed that there was a fairly dramatic change in who qualified for the playoffs year over year. In 2015-2016, 5 teams qualified for the playoffs that did not qualify the previous season. In 2016-2017, 7 new teams qualified for the playoffs that hadn't the season before.

Before the start of last season, I conducted the same exercise back to 2005-06. You are exactly correct. There is more turnover in playoff teams than folks realize. The average number of new entrants each season is 6 (10 repeats). The lowest number was 4 new teams in a season (12 repeats). The most was 7 new teams (9 repeats). Because I created a table, I saved it in Word. I could not find my post within HF. Here is my research:

Okay, so I decided to go back and look at how many new teams are in the playoffs each year. For better or worse, I used my baseline year as the 03-04 season. That is the season before the entire season was lost. It is only reasonable to assume that the makeup of the playoffs after a complete year lost would show a higher change than normal. Here are the results;
Season|New – East|New –West|Total|Games Played
05-06|3|2|5|82
06-07|3|2|5|82
07-08|4|1|5|82
08-09|2|4|6|82
09-10|2|4|6|82
10-11|4|1|5|82
11-12|4|1|5|82
12-13|3|2|5|48
13-14|4|2|6|82
14-15|3|4|7|82
15-16|2|2|4|82
The least amount of change in the last 11 years was just last year when only 4 new teams made the playoffs. The represents a 25% change to the field and that was the least. You might have expected that the 05-06 year (after the lockout) or the 12-13 year (partial season) would be the most volatile. And yet, that just doesn’t appear to be the case.
SO I guess my point is, as you look at some of the predictions from these “learned experts”, if they don’t have at least 4 or 5 new teams making the playoffs, they are most likely wrong.

Islanders will be making the playoffs this year (Philly and Canes not quite there yet IMO) - Rangers or Jackets out.

Yup. They got hot come playoff time. U know, once you make it in anything can happen etc. They are an average team who will be in tough just to squeak in. Guess we see.

Dallas in San Jose out West

Ottawa is the interesting one for me. I feel they were INCREDIBLY lucky in a lot of places, and I dont think its repeatable. But they have EK, and hes a magician. So I dont know.

Carey Price can take any mediocre team to the playoffs quite easily. It's making noise while in that is going to be the problem for the Habs and with their current lineup, if it remains unchanged, they'll be an early exit again. That is unless MB can find a top LD and/or top C without giving much (not holding my breath).

Sens were fun to watch ; and definitely not a hater

To me, they are a odd team to predict. They played like a strong playoff structured team; can they do it all year?

If I had to pick which team misses out of Montreal / Boston / Ottawa (I'll leave Leafs out because of bias)

I'll take Ottawa or Boston. Leaning more towards Ottawa. Odd because of how they looked in the playoffs, but could see a skid a some point.

G and D are really nice, but the forward group is far from something to get crazy about

I know the Flyers have a great pool of young talent but they lost Brayden Schenn and replaced Mason with Elliot (sideways.)

They missed the playoff by 8 points and their season included a 10 game win streak. If they had just gone 7-3-0 in that stretch, still a great stretch but much more sustainable and/or repeatable, then they miss the playoffs by 14 points.

Frankly, I fail to see how anyone is as high on them as they are. Unless they have huge years from some youngsters and Elliot is a 10 goalie, I find it very unlikely.

-MTL NYR and BOS are really underrated as usual before the start.
-MTL are 7th while Price miss a full season2 seasons ago and it was also the only time they miss the playoff.

Trying to figure out why that stat means anything right now.

Barring another brutal injury season, Tampa will be back in. I could see Buffalo pushing in too. I don't foresee any likely change in which teams emerge from the Metro, just differently ordered.

If Tampa and Buffalo are both in, my gut says Boston and one of Montreal/Ottawa are out.
