Yeah and that’s okay as long as his usage was a 3rd pairing Dman that’s occasionally used for the PK when there’s plentisome. I’m not sure how much more we are going to get out of Hogg but if he can play shut down D in his own zone I don’t have an issue with him. Tbh, I think a Morin/Hogg pairing would be pain to play against. It’s just the transition game and entering out of the zone that is my concern.
To me, it's more or less OK for now to put him on the third pair and limit him as much as possible, but I'd hope that we have a better option in Big Sam when he is ready. The first thing to do is obviously replace Andy with Myers, or a dead bird, either would be better. Andy is the biggest problem back there by far, and Myers is the next up, so that's that. But then when Big Sam is healthy again, I hope he gets his shot and relegates Haggar to 7D.
He really wasn't much of a shutdown D back there, especially early - there was one sequence where the puck was sitting in front of him and he just kind of looked stunned and lost, like he didn't know what to do with himself. I'm not trying to character-assassinate him and say he did that all night, it was just one play, but he just doesn't look comfortable as an NHL defenseman to me. I'd be happy to have him prove me wrong and make me look stupid(er), but I don't see any reason to believe he is going to become something he has never been. If he does, great.
