I hear you, and I'm certainly not one to talk about yard misadventures. A few years ago, I went in with a sprayer of Round Up and used it on weeds on my backyard paving stone firepit. A couple days later, I noticed there were dead grass footprints all over my lawn. Seems I walked on some of the sprayed weeds and then proceeded to walk on the lawn. Pure genius.

Just saying, why poison your back yard. Stay away from stuff like roundup for any reason. Especially if you have a garden. Another solution is to lay some outdoor carpets on top of the paving stones for the weed growing seasons and in one to two years, with no sunlight or means to come up they tend to disappear.

Paving stones without the best possible underlay however just don't work. Unfortunately it seems that most underlay doesn't at all do what it is supposed to do.

Actually Id take my chances of using double polythene under the paving stones than using round up. Problems with poly too, especially if theres a slope, but it at least keeps the weeds out.

Underlay works initially, but as time goes on, it really is quite useless, as I have it in several spots. Dust and dirt buildup in mulch is an invitation to invasive species, as they don't need a lot of dirt to prop up. Paving stones have sand in between them, and weeds will thrive in that. I have put down some polymeric sand in between them and that works well, but unfortunately, after 2-3 years, it dries up and comes out and the problem is back again. I just refreshed the ones at Trestle a couple weeks ago. I have artificial grass out at our spot in Trestle and it's constantly sprouting weeds. I usually pull weeds, and still do, but at the time, it was a little over whelming so I sprayed an area that would never come close to being near other parts that were alive. Unless some idiot took it to them by foot transfer.

Paving stones just generally don't work here despite being a hot seller here. The only way to go is to use a proper sealant after application and keep sealing. Makes it harder for the weeds to grow and gives the pavers a wet look. But overall with our thin soil layer and clay under soil we're a perfectly suited climate and ground for weeds. They grow better here as they get roots down in the clay and once that happens its over.

Gonna try buying some good rubber pavers. People complain about these not being perfect either but when theres problems with them you can just take them all out in 20mins, reapply underlay, throw them back on, presto. Waiting for the prices to come down a bit. Paving stones, jmo, are a pain in the ass. A pain in the back too. ;)

if you ever consider the rubber pavers make sure to get two sided design ones. Because edges come up sometimes and then you just flip them over.

I do spray our front lawn with weed killer. But nowhere close to our garden and of course the front yard drains off in the other direction. I use it sparingly and they have less harmful week killers out there that work half decently.

NOVA SCOTIA

AWCN11 CWHX
Weather summary
for Nova Scotia
issued by Environment Canada
at 12:35 p.m. ADT Friday 16 July 2021.

Discussion.

On the afternoon of June 30th, 2021 an intense thunderstorm wind
event impacted central Nova Scotia with most of the damage occurring
near the town of Stewiacke. After collaboration between Environment
Canada and the Northern Tornadoes Project it was determined that the
likely cause of the most significant damage was due to a very short
duration tornado which occurred concurrently with strong downdraft
winds.

Event Type: Tornado, damage rating EF1

Location: Stewiacke, NS

Time: 2:45 PM ADT (1745Z)

Description: Structural damage and tree damage was reported in the
Stewiacke area following a severe thunderstorm passing through. An
ECCC ground survey was completed on July 1, 2021. Upon NTP analysis
of survey photos and drone imagery collected by the public, EF1
tornado damage was confirmed at a farm property in the community on
the southern side of town off of the George Street Extension, with
an estimated track of 600 m, max. path width of 50 m and max. wind
speed of 155 km/h. Tornado motion was from W (approx. 265 degrees).
Satellite imagery review revealed visible tree damage at the end of
the tornado track.

Event Type: Downburst, damage rating EF0

Location: Stewiacke, NS

Time: 2:45 PM ADT (1745Z)

Description: Structural damage and tree damage was reported in the
Stewiacke area following a severe thunderstorm passing through. An
ECCC ground survey was completed on July 1, 2021. Isolated weak tree
damage in the impacted area was assessed as caused by an EF0
microburst (estimated max. wind speed of 115 km/h).

Confirmed EF-2 tornado in Barrie Thursday 15-July-2021

Thunderstorms developed across much of Southern Ontario Thursday.
One thunderstorm became severe Thursday afternoon as it moved across
Barrie, producing a tornado that blasted the southern part of the
city.

Just after 2:30 pm Thursday, a tornado tracked from the miniature
golf course on Huronia Road and Mapleview Drive (in south Barrie)
and continued eastward towards Prince William Way where it caused
significant damage on the north side of Mapleview drive. Trees were
uprooted or toppled, and at least 10 roofs were removed. The second
floor was destroyed or removed from 2 houses. A couple vehicles were
overturned. Roof shingles were damaged or removed from a number of
other homes along the damage track from the tornado.

There were 8 injuries as a result of this tornadic thunderstorm.

A damage survey team from ECCC and Western University's Northern
Tornados Project determined a preliminary rating of EF-2 with
maximum wind speeds 210 km/h.

The damage path was about 5 km long and up to 100 metres wide.

The damage track may have continued towards Friday Harbour and over
Lake Simcoe.
