Discussion.
On the afternoon of June 30th, 2021 an intense thunderstorm wind
event impacted central Nova Scotia with most of the damage occurring
near the town of Stewiacke. After collaboration between Environment
Canada and the Northern Tornadoes Project it was determined that the
likely cause of the most significant damage was due to a very short
duration tornado which occurred concurrently with strong downdraft
winds.

Description: Structural damage and tree damage was reported in the
Stewiacke area following a severe thunderstorm passing through. An
ECCC ground survey was completed on July 1, 2021. Upon NTP analysis
of survey photos and drone imagery collected by the public, EF1
tornado damage was confirmed at a farm property in the community on
the southern side of town off of the George Street Extension, with
an estimated track of 600 m, max. path width of 50 m and max. wind
speed of 155 km/h. Tornado motion was from W (approx. 265 degrees).
Satellite imagery review revealed visible tree damage at the end of
the tornado track.

Description: Structural damage and tree damage was reported in the
Stewiacke area following a severe thunderstorm passing through. An
ECCC ground survey was completed on July 1, 2021. Isolated weak tree
damage in the impacted area was assessed as caused by an EF0
microburst (estimated max. wind speed of 115 km/h).

Confirmed EF-2 tornado in Barrie Thursday 15-July-2021
Thunderstorms developed across much of Southern Ontario Thursday.
One thunderstorm became severe Thursday afternoon as it moved across
Barrie, producing a tornado that blasted the southern part of the
city.
Just after 2:30 pm Thursday, a tornado tracked from the miniature
golf course on Huronia Road and Mapleview Drive (in south Barrie)
and continued eastward towards Prince William Way where it caused
significant damage on the north side of Mapleview drive. Trees were
uprooted or toppled, and at least 10 roofs were removed. The second
floor was destroyed or removed from 2 houses. A couple vehicles were
overturned. Roof shingles were damaged or removed from a number of
other homes along the damage track from the tornado.
There were 8 injuries as a result of this tornadic thunderstorm.
A damage survey team from ECCC and Western University's Northern
Tornados Project determined a preliminary rating of EF-2 with
maximum wind speeds 210 km/h.
The damage path was about 5 km long and up to 100 metres wide.
The damage track may have continued towards Friday Harbour and over
Lake Simcoe.
