Yeah for sure, if anything I think I just miss vacation planning. Sometimes I enjoy the planning process more than actually taking the trip. From a hockey point of view, it's probably going to be a below average crop as well since a decent chunk of the top 2021 draft prospects are late '02 birthdates and ineligible for this tournament (Power/Beniers/Eklund/Johnson/Raty/Wallstedt). Plus any CHL players who haven't been eliminated from their league playoffs yet.

Devils will probably seek the best of the rest since there won't be anyone a cut above everyone else.

My only concern, really, with Clarke is that his skating is a bit weird imo. It looks a bit choppy and almost like his knees are facing inward. It looks funny but he's had that different kind of skating since his Minor Midget days. He's been able to be effective with it, but if we see him drop on draft day or if he's much lower on a ranking list than the general consensus, that would be the reason why.

I would still be thrilled if the Devils were somehow able to draft him.

Unrelated, but I just saw something about the 2022 draft and there’s another Jack Hughes that could be a top 10 pick. That would be hilarious if we could have two Jack Hughes.

The crazy thing is he also plays for the NTDP.
It would be even crazier if he was Russian or Swedish or something with that name...

I thought you were all kidding.

Holy crap! There *is* another Jack Hughes!! :biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh:

"Jack Hughes is going win the Conn Smythe easily."'
"Which one?"
"The other one"
"The Devils one or Team X one?"
"Yes."

What I always ask with players possessing "idiosyncratic" skating styles is, simply: "how well do they get around the ice in comparison to everyone else".

A great example would be Jeff Skinner. In his draft year (2010), I had Skinner in my top 5 -- far higher than the consensus. Many had him outside the top 15, citing his lack of size and unconventional skating style. Despite the fact that Skinner skated like no one I had ever seen, I felt he had tremendous balance and got from Point A to Point B very, very quickly. So, I stopped caring about the fact that he looked weird getting around.

I feel the same way about Brandt Clarke. I would say his speed and acceleration are both excellent; absolutely strengths. And there's no denying that Clarke's ability with the puck and vision are both high-end qualities; borderline elite. If I have one question about Clarke it's his defensive play which -- though not a disastrous detriment as with a Jeremie Poirier or Helge Grans -- certainly needs a great deal of improvement. Though I wish he had a full 2020-21 season to develop in the OHL, I would say based on his draft-1 campaign with the Barrie Colts that this is absolutely a player with top-pairing, high-scoring upside at the NHL level. Therefore, I would certainly consider Brandt Clarke a top-10 prospect for the 2021 draft, perhaps even top 5. Right now he is my highest ranked RD, and many pundits apparently feel the same way.

Since the Devils are making the playoffs, my top pick for the First Round (20-32) would be Stanislav Svozil! His last name sounds like something straight out of Pokémon.

Plus, he was pretty good at the WJ.

Stanislav Svozil Is a Top-10 Talent for the 2021 NHL Draft

I've actually talked extensively about Svozil -- he's one of my absolute favorites for the 2021 draft. Great puck mover, excellent skater and very polished defensively. I can easily see him in my top 10 overall for the 2021 draft.

FC Hockey -- a terrific scouting site for those who are not hip to them -- just released their 2021 draft rankings. Luke Hughes #1 overall -- the second time I've seen this from a reputable source. Here's the first round:

NHL Draft Rankings - FC Hockey

Combining the eye test with the fact that he’s one of the youngest players in this class – just six days away from the 2022 NHL Draft –

It’s all about that birthday with Luke, with so little to go on with the lack of games it just sticks out because the other players are 1) mostly much older 2) not getting to play enough to separate from the pack.

Apparently Brett Lindros ruined it for Eric, so yes.
The only thing close to that I can think of is Eric and Jordan Staal both going 2nd, while Marc (the Quinn stand-in) at 12th. There is no equivalent to Jared “49” Staal.

There are enough similarities that it will give Pierre McGuire an excuse to talk endlessly about the Staal family in Thunder Bay Ontario again. Not that he needs one.

Am I wrong in thinking this is the year to load up in draft picks?
With the inability to watch prospects play for the most part , there are going to be tons of players slipping through the cracks and being taken in later rounds that would be selected way higher given normal circumstances .
I can see a lot of late round picks outperforming higher picks when looking back in a year or two .
It almost sucks that Hughes brother is ranked so high as I wanted the devils to draft him

Well, there's been talk of delaying the draft. Shouldn't make any moves till we know for sure.

True. Hard to know then what to do if you trade someone like a Gusev or Palms (just examples ) . Do you take a prospect in trade or take as many picks as you can ? If the draft is still a go , I’d prefer more picks vs a prospect , unless the prospect is a damn sexy one .

The 2022 draft is supposed to be lit tho, with a much better top group and if they don’t delay 2021 draft too much then there will be a rich crop of overagers. I’d ask for 2022 picks right now.

how many more draft picks do we need? IIRC we have 8 in the upcoming draft.

IMO this is the time to leverage areas where we have a surplus of talent to add nhl-ready players in areas we need help.

Does NJ really have a surplus of talent anywhere? Maybe for bottom six forwards, but what will that bring back? An older more expensive bottom six forward? I don't see a real position of strength for NJ to deal for a real upgrade. I'd be in favor of packaging Zacha and Butcher for a better defender but with the flat cap would any team even be interested?
