It takes a ton of planning to do a tournament like this. You can't just drop it on someone 2 weeks before the tournament and get anything but a disaster
In my opinion, there is no fairer way to do this than how the 1987 host was decided. It wasn’t about money back then. It was about the hockey. I doubt the 1987 Memorial Cup in Oshawa was a disaster.
Of course, it couldn’t really be done today because we don’t have a bye any more. But for me, at the end of the day, it’s all about the hockey. All the rest is just fluff. We hosted in 2008 and sure there was prep time needed but most of the reason for that prep time was for the fluff.
Fireworks. Alumni game. CHL team displays. Etc etc etc. All nice ideas but at the end of the day, all fluff. I’d trade the fluff in to make sure we have a competitive host every time.
