Even if you have the "best" lottery odds, you're actually statistically most likely to drop 3 spots. Same as the team with #2 odds.

So if you move up any spots, or only drop a spot, you've actually done well.

Yeah I fully expect we'll drop a few spots, but anything can happen. There's a lot of good players that will be available wherever we pick, although it's a shame the top of this draft is light on defenceman.

Btw, while I do agree that we do need some size on D to be a contender, I disagree on that being the issue currently. They just suck..lol. The D is comprised of small players AND crappy skaters...recipe for disaster.

Rough initial rankings:

1. Lafreniere
2. Raymond
3. Byfield
4. Stutzle
5. Drysdale
6. Perfetti
7. Holtz
8. Lundell
9. Rossi
10. Askarov

Some possible surprise d-men for late 1st round (but they might climb the rankings): Lukas Cormier, Kaiden Guhle, Helge Grans.

I did know some of these players already from before and there's prob way more other hidden gems but it is what it is for now...

Also, the U20 will prob change my opinion on some of the players (like lundell was pretty damn impressive in the u20s last yr, whereas lafreniere was pretty damn invisible). It's going to be interesting with that top 3, that's for sure.

Flame away!

Btw, @StevenToddIves, quoting this in case you missed it, for later. Although I'm sure you know it but I'm gunna emphasize that this is a very rough initial rankings lol. I'm very high on Raymond (while a bit down on others) but things can change.

How slow our D is, is a problem as a whole. It never fit with how they ultimately wanted to play.

Yeah I'm already prepared for the reverse 'Hall Draft Lottery Specialist' scenario this year where we drop back the maximum number of spots :/

We'll trade Hall to a borderline playoff team for a lottery protected pick, they'll just miss the playoffs but win the draft lottery. We'll get a 2021 1st instead, which will end up being a late first round pick when that team makes the playoffs next year.

-Trade Hall to MTL for a package including their 1st
-MTL misses the playoffs
-MTL wins the draft lottery, but we own their pick
-Plus we also have our own pick in the #3-#6 range
-?????

Truth to what you are saying, but I'm not going to like it if we take a 5'10" d-man with our top pick.

I'm kind of conflicted by this. I do think it's critical that this team get bigger and stronger, but at the same time, it's not like our small players are good anyway. Makar and Q Hughes don't seem to have any issues with their size.

I agree it is hard to evaluate a player that may be undersized but effective in contrast with how that player works in building a team. I don’t watch HUGHES or Bratt and think they are too small. I don’t worry about Vats being smaller. Butcher I see as having limitations in his game and Greene is small but his issues look to me to be age related and he might look worse were he bigger and even slower. It’s tricky. I do think the front of NJ’s net is way too easy for other teams but I imagine other teams at learning how to make the most of the new crop of smaller puck movers so NJ should see what is working with those teams and players.

Ya, if you told me we were selecting the next Makar I'd be OK with that.

It also seems, oddly enough, at least with Makar and Hughes, that these smaller offensive minded d-men make an impact quicker then more defensive oriented players.

As much fun as it is to think about adding a Lafreniere I’m assuming the Devils pick 4-7 this year. There will be talented players in that range.
