In @DonnyNucker :s defence, I was in a piss poor mood and initially answered in a really rude fashion.

In my defence I just had no interest dismantling his strawman argument. Some fires take way more time to put out than to start.
Not much of a defence. Having to deal with a person's *****y attitude doesn't justify persisting on a nonsensical argument based on stubborn misrepresentation. Plenty of others dismantled it for him. That should have given him some clue to abandon the clearly wrong argument and try to get at you from a more reasonable angle, if this was all just the result of taking it personally.

Let's actually talk about 2019 draft prospects ffs. My friend went to a lot of Giants games, and he said he views Byram as more of a top 10/15 guy right now rather than a top 5 prospect in the draft. I'm excited to track the WHL this year , a lot of good prospects for sure.

Thanks for posting that, gives me some clues about which visiting teams to catch when they're in town.

Nick Kent looks like a good replacement for Gunnarsson if he doesn't get a contract.
I should do the same for the USHL, now that I think about it. The problem is that their commitment list doesn't show commitment dates, so this'll take longer to put together

How is Byrams offensive potential? Im not touching a dman in the top 10 out of the WHL if they arent close to PPG over their draft year.

I haven't watched him myself, but it seems like he'll be close to PPG based on his production in his draft-1 year. I heard he's pretty good defensively for his age.

Okay, so between the talent they're getting from the USHL and BCHL, Boston College's 2019 freshman class looks ridiculous

i am not sure why this is a topic people are defending. if someone posted "boy we could have two centres better than horvat in two years, wouldn't that be incredible" i'd kind of nod and smile and say "sure rmb" and wait for folks to trash him, so i don't see how adding the negative angle of having to trade horvat as a result makes it something worth discussing.

No one needs to defend it. I know why they are doing so, but it's not the time. Pettersson has to prove to be a NHL C and the Canucks have to draft a top5 C in 2019. These things need to happen first for it to be a real debate. For now, chalk it up to reverie and move on (a request to everyone).

I’m not sure Pettersson will even be a C

Yup. I think he will be able to switch over, and management has a lot invested in making that happen, but he has to do it first.

The player that has caught my interest early in this draft is Alex Turcotte. From what I have read and seen, he plays a complete game is very savvy offensively. Quick. A little undersized, but very mobile. Aside from Hughes, he's the American player that is most intriguing to me. Thoughts?

To bump this thread, this draft is very forward heavy. I think most of the top defenders are boosted up some rankings because of the lack of them. Byram, Honka and Robertson bring up the lead with a few closely behind.

Jack Hughes comes as advertised.

Kakko should be playing for Finland at 6 pm today on TSN against Canada

How good the Hughes brothers look right now is going to make the canucks getting 50 points and falling to 4th next year that much more painful.
Tbh I’ve seen Jack play live 5 times now and I have a few points. He is a very skilled playmaker and skater, very agile and quick. Over the past few games I’ve seen he’s fallen on the ice pretty much every single shift. Of course that’ll change because he’s only 155 ish pounds right now. He’s an offensive dynamo but pretty poor defensively and there’s no physicality or pushback at all. He’s a number 1 Center for sure, but he’s not a franchise Center like Matthews, McDavid etc imo. He’s too small for that.

Size determines whether a player can be a franchise player?

To a certain extent in my opinion yes. By size I mean muscle and mass not just height. I worded that badly. He’s a franchise #1, just not to the level of McDavid, Matthews etc.

He might not be (I disagree re: Matthews) but not because of his size or strength. Pat Lafontaine was a franchise #1 and played in a far more physical era. Jack Hughes can certainly be that in today’s NHL.

It’s always a concern by the masses every year when I highly touted prospect come along. People don’t remember that these kids are just turning 17 and still have room to grow.

Or the fact that size as Patrick Kane and Johnny Gradeau has proven is becoming overrated in the new NHL.

You know it’s going to happen... we always feel that “this year will be different”, but i’m sure we’ll drop.

And for a guy like Gaudreau I sort of get it. He’s 5’6 and had the build of a 15 year old even in college. Jack Hughes is 5’10 and has a whole year before he’s even in the draft. Lots of time to fill out his frame to support his Lafontaine-like skillset.

Dach, Cozens, and Krebs are all quick skaters. I see why they are all considered top prospects.

Cozens is a fairly powerful skater who loves to have the puck on his stick. He's a 6'3'', two-way center with grit and vision. He showed flashes of individual brilliance today and has tried to drive wide to the net a few times. Some think he has a chance to challenge for a Top 3 position. He has been one of Team Canada's preferred penalty killers.

Kirby Dach is a very upright skater -- he's 6'3'' as well, and is powerful on his skates, good on his edges, and should be considered a playmaker. However, he has excellent net-front presence and almost scored twice today by batting the puck from mid-air; both goals were disallowed due to his stick being over the cross bar. He has good speed for hi size, and is somewhat of a cross between Michael Rasmussen and Cody Glass. Like Glass, he knows how to put himself between the opponent and the puck in order to steal pucks and create havoc on the forecheck. That said, he is so much stronger than Glass. He isn't a power forward; he's more of a Joe Thornton type than the similarly-tall Cozens. So far in the tournament, Dach has centered the top line with Krebs and Lafreniere on his wings.

Peyton Krebs, on the other hand, is a smaller player. He stands at 5'11''. His game has more of an east-west component, although he can wheel up the ice with good speed. He's a good forechecker with creativity, a good wrist shot, and playmaking ability. He tried a few no-look passes from the boards and seems very spatially-aware.

Alexis Lafreniere will be an exciting player to keep an eye on next year. He has grit, good strength, and a quick stick to hound the puck. He has good straight-line speed, but isn't a really dominant puck rusher. Rather, he uses his one-on-one stick skills to hang on to the puck amidst the opposition's attempt to steal the puck away. For that reason, he picks up loose pucks around the crease and in the slot very well, and knows where to be to retrieve loose pucks around the offensive zone. He shows lots of poise, and has a pretty snappy wrist shot as well as a tendency to try creative passes. He had a nifty between-the-legs shot attempt tonight while in the crease.

Justin Barron is a name to watch for the 2020 draft too. He is an electric offensive defenseman who loves to carry the puck up.
