We are 6th in Pronman's post draft organizational rating for 22 and under players. We have one of, if not the, largest list at 17 players. That list doesnt include Murray or a goalie.

We slide a slot with LA jumping us because of Byfield (13 to 5 jump). Either way, we shouldn't have any prominent graduates from the list this year while Toronto will fall into the 20s because of Matthews.

Here is our section:

Carolina in recent drafts targeted a lot of the high-end skill players and has a system full of slow, small or otherwise divisive players. But almost all of them have skill and make a lot of plays. This is a system that should produce an entertaining style of play with a lot of offense. Not everyone in the league is sold the way the Hurricanes are building is going to work, but they have acquired a lot of players I believe in.

When does it make sense to start a new thread? Some of the colts are already out of the gate, but most others are still in the paddock. It's no longer the 19-20 season, but it doesn't feel like 20-21 has begun.

By all means...have at it! If you'd rather not, let me know and I'll do it.

I saw that Greenville recently signed Max Zimmer. Good to see him still technically being in "the system", though obviously a huge long-shot at best to even be a decent AHLer. Who knows, Dave Gust managed to get an NHL two-way from a random AHL flyer by Charlotte. Anyways, Cotton and Bokk are the real gets this season (if Bokk comes over).

Maybe this is old news, but I don’t think I realized Suzuki has a permanent blind spot in his eye. It sounds like it was pretty scary for a while; I’m glad he’s doing better now

Scary and I'm glad he's healthy from a quality of life perspective.

But... I get he's doing better now but that's still a potential major blow to his skill level, no?

Hard to escape that reality. Manny Malhotra showed it’s possible to still have a career with vision issues, but it’s not like this doesn’t matter.

Wheeler did a great job on that article, though.

absolutely it will and i don't think you'll see anyone seriously denying it. i always remember how much of a gamebreaker bryan berard looked to be before his eye injury and what he ultimately became and it sucks. the malhotra example to me is a much different kind of player. he played up the middle and most everything he needed to see was directly in front of him and even still a lot of folks say his offensive potential was impacted significantly by that injury. i don't know if ryan has enough intangibles to his game to account for a loss of vision unless they can mitigate it by putting him on the right side so his peripheral is less impacted. if nothing else, i would think this means he's going to spend some time in the ahl so they can find out exactly what's going on there whereas in preseason last year it looked like he would be on a year to year basis for making the team.

Yeah I had no idea it was permanent. That completely changes my expectations of him. That's likely a lost first rounder, hard to imagine that wont affect the high end vision he needs to have to be a top six playmaker. Feel sorry for the kid, and that's a bit of a blow for us. Great that he so far has overcome it and it gives you hope, but that's a game changer for a player.

I'm just going to wait and see what happens. Luckily, if he can't make it because of this, I don't think it would be as devastating as it would have been for the longest time. We're still pretty well stocked. You never want to lose out on a 1st rounder, but we could and not be toast.

But he performed pretty well down the stretch after coming back last year (production-wise, I certainly didn't watch him). And that was pretty early into his new normal. I won't be surprised if he adapts and overcomes.

This. Supposedly he played some of his best hockey after the injury.

i hate to be the continual voice of dissent on matters like these, but there's not a coach out there that is going to say "yeah suzuki looked terrible that eye thing is really going to suck for him." the vision thing is a big big deal. it would have been game over ten years ago when the game was so much more physical. that information alone drops him out of my top 5 list for carolina. even prior to the injury he was a guy that wasn't producing as much counting stats as his talent would suggest he could and this is going to make it tougher. he might have to rebrand as a spark plug physical presence to have a meaningful chance of making it.
