Actually, given the wrong call, it did 100% determine who won the game.

Unless you somehow believe the Saints were going to miss a field goal that was 13 yards shorter than an extra point, with the game clock expiring to boot.

I dont care if the Saints had eleventy-billion chances to win the game AFTER the botched call and blew them all, that is irrelevant to the fact that had that call not been blown, the game ends in a Saints' victory and they dont have the "opportunity" to blow said eleventy-billion chances to win the game.

And if I had all the winning numbers, I'd be a millionaire. o_O

I get what you're saying, BG.

But I also pointed out the head-scratching decision to throw a pass when running the ball and chewing up more clock(forcing the Rams to burn a timeout) would've been the wisest move instead.

Bone-head Non-call notwithstanding, that would never even have occurred if Sean Payton didn't get a bit pass-happy in that situation.

Just think about it for a sec.

Saints run the ball, get stopped on 3rd down and force the Rams to burn a timeout that they wouldn't have when they get the ball back after the FG.

That would affect things on their end considerably.

I would be OK if they were allowed to review pass interference or personal foul calls under 2 minutes or something like that

The NFL needs full time officials

To me that’s the crux of the problem. A ref who flies in on saturday sent an email about not deciding the game on a close call from the head of officials. He reads it for three seconds and doesn’t have any nuanced understanding of what that really means. It then plays out as don’t call anything big at critical moments in the game. Of course the bad lack of call can also decide the game but they don’t think that far ahead because they aren’t paid to.

They don’t have the money for it :sarcasm:

Seriously though, you’re going to have to pay every ref a real full time wage with benefits if you want true ‘full time’ refs which is a bit of a misnomer to start with cause at most they work 25-26 days a year anyway counting preseason and playoffs. There’s only so much classroom work and training you can do aside from game day so if you want these guys to be dedicated to working full time whatever that means you’re gonna have to pay them big time.

at What point do Super Bowl ratings drop if the Pats are perennially in it?

Four out of five years, nine overall in the Brady era - we're already there, ratings haven't dipped yet. Having one big, bad team draws especially when the other's relatively new like the Falcons, Eagles or Rams. The only spot the NFL might be in trouble is if you ever had two at the same time monopolizing the thing a la Cavs-Warriors.

The particular reason it won’t go away is because that was the single most blatant example of defensive pass interference I have seen in about 60 years of watching football. Probably that anyone has ever seen. The defensive back brutally tackled the receiver - just ran him over with a helmet to helmet hit - at least a full second or 1.5 seconds before the ball was anywhere in the area. And on a crucial game changing play. No one can watch it and even question it. It cost the club an NFC championship game and it’s the worst non call in the history of the game. Name me another non call that even comes close. Nobody usually remembers them. But this one will live in infamy forever. A total scandal and made a mockery of the game.

in a few months and once the new season starts, no one will really be talking about it anymore

I just don't see it. People still talk about the Tuck Rule, Dez catching/not catching the ball, etc. This just seems to be the type of thing that's going to be around for a very long time.

The tuck rule has more staying power cause it kick-started a dynasty. But yeah this is definitely gonna get as much play as the Dez catch especially if it leads to a rule change like that one.
