Not to single out Bouchard but how exactly do NHL players work on their speed? Hire a skating coach? Specific exercises for their legs?

As someone who has never played hockey I don't know

yeah definitely agree, I should have specified that it all depends if he shows some defensive responsibility in the pre-season. Do you think he can be ready for an NHL season this early? It's pretty rare imo.

off the top of my head I recall Gostisbehere, Ekblad, Doughty being younger defenceman who stepped in and had relative success pretty early in their careers. Also Zach Werenski comes to mind

way more Dmen are making that jump, Provorov, Carlo, Mcavoy, etc

If you're looking to improve acceleration or the "first few steps" the training is going to heavily target olympic lifts, plyometrics, and strength. The general idea behind olympic lifts is being able to generate more force over a very short period of time, and forms of plyometrics (especially drop jump variations) work to allow athletes to generate higher levels of force with minimal contact time with the ground (read up on the stretch shortening cycle if you want more information). On top of that there should be some sort of periodization in the training which also incorporates phases of maximal strength training as the carry over into explosive strength is undeniable.

Also yes, skating coach would also help especially if there are fundamentals in a skating stride that need tweaking. Not to mention on ice training is necessary to transfer gains from the strength and power training mentioned above.

Drai had a noticeable difference in skating after his rookie year. Spent most of the summer putting power into his legs with off ice workouts. He didn't even bother with skating drills until late in the summer as well.

Draisaitl’s work in summer pays off in November and December
