19-20? I love that team USA 2nd line once all those guys start hitting their prime.

After the big-3 are signed, I hope they will have enough to sign Dizzy. If the big-3 stay, Dzingel will out produce his breakout season from last year (bold prediction).
If they can sign the big 3 to contract extensions, honestly who cares what happens to Dzingel? That would be so huge for the team. Dzingel is a nice player but he's completely replaceable internally unlike the others.

That whole top line are UFA July 2019. Realistically, we can only afford one.

If we can afford only one then Ottawa has no business having a NHL team. Sure, there’s ways to reach the floor without spending as much but this year it’s already 60 M$. Gaborik and MacArthur LTIRs will come to an end, Ryan’s contract will come to an end (or will be moved), even the overpaid goalies contracts end soon, so they will have to spend somewhere. Even if they sign the big 3 to huge contracts, they will have a hard time to reach the floor in the near future.

That got me curious enough to crunch the numbers

The roster for 2019-20 IF they don't re-sign any of Karlsson, Stone, Duchene and Dzingel, and instead let them walk and/or trade them for future assets. I only signed RFAs : gave 5 M$ to Ceci, 2 M$ to White and Wolanin and 0.9 M$ to others.

Tkachuk ($925,000) - Brown ($863,333) - White ($2,000,000)
Boedker ($4,000,000) - Pageau ($3,100,000) - Ryan ($7,250,000)
Formenton ($753,333) - Chlapik ($728,333) - Batherson ($736,666)
Paul ($900,000) - Smith ($3,250,000) - Luchuk ($759,166)
Gagné ($900,000)

Chabot ($863,333) - Ceci ($5,000,000)
Wolanin ($2,000,000) - Jaros ($755,000)
Lajoie ($710,000) - Harpur ($725,000)
Borowiecki ($1,200,000)

Anderson ($4,750,000)
Condon ($2,400,000)

That roster is at $55,844,164, which is under the floor THIS year so even more next year. And that's accounting the $9,525,000 in DEAD cap space for LTIR contracts (Gaborik and MacArthur) and also Phaneuf $1,750,000 retention (which will eventually come to an end as well).

In 2020-21, those contracts will be over :

Boedker ($4,000,000)
MacArthur ($4,650,000)
Pageau ($3,100,000)
Borowiecki ($1,200,000)
Anderson ($4,750,000)
Condon ($2,400,000)

Ryan will have 2 years left, Smith and Gaborik 1 year left... if those guys are still on the payroll by then...

If only one of Karlsson, Stone, Duchene and Dzingel is signed, good luck reaching the cap floor in 2019-20 and it will be next to impossible after that.

Now, let's say we'd be able to re-sign all 4 players to favorable cap hits for them

Karlsson ($11,000,000)
Stone ($8,000,000)
Duchene ($8,000,000)
Dzingel ($4,000,000)

My strategy would be to trade Zack Smith for the best pick you can get (and even if it was just a late pick). I would also try to trade one of Condon or Anderson and have a new goalie (doubtful that Hogberg or Gustavsson would be ready to be full time NHL Goalies). Also, deal Harpur (or Boro) for anything.

2019-20

Dzingel ($4,000,000)- Duchene ($8,000,000) - Stone ($8,000,000)
Tkachuk ($925,000) - Brown ($863,333) - White ($2,000,000)
Boedker ($4,000,000) - Pageau ($3,100,000) - Ryan ($7,250,000)
Formenton ($753,333) - Chlapik ($728,333) - Batherson ($736,666)
Luchuk ($759,166)

Chabot ($863,333) - Karlsson ($11,000,000)
Wolanin ($2,000,000) - Ceci ($5,000,000)
Lajoie ($710,000) - Jaros ($755,000)
Borowiecki ($1,200,000)

Anderson ($4,750,000)
Condon ($2,400,000)

That roster would be at $81,069,164 BUT that's accounting the dead cap hits of those Gaborik and MacArthur LTIRs; so the roster budget would be in reality around 72 M$ (even accounting those insurance costs for the LTIR contracts), probably less as I didn't crunch the numbers for all the real salaries (ex : Boedker cap hit is 4 M$ but his salary is 3 M$). They can easily afford Stone, Duchene and Karlsson, even at those amounts. If that's still too tight, then you can trade Dzingel, Ceci, Pageau or even Ryan (plus if you were able to deal a goalie)

That's my plan and logically, I assume they have the same plan.

Ottawa needs a number of their prospects to be as good NHL players as they were junior players in their best seasons for this team to rebuild into Conference finalists at some future point.

Duchene - Brown - Stone
Tkachuk - White - Batherson
Luchuk - Chlapik - Nurmi
Formenton - Paul - Gagné/McCormick

Chabot - Ceci
Wolanin - JBD
Lajoie - Jaros/Englund

Gustavsson - Hogberg

Rookie camp intrasquad games? or does that kill their college eligibility? I thought they could pay their own way but couldn't participate in games that involved players from other teams.

They probably could do that .. I just don't think they will.. I think there is a 48 hour rule where they can be reimbursed expenses.. after that they are on their own for all expenses including travel to and fro. Exhibition games are definitely out.

Having Tychonick and Bernard-Docker both playing for UND is awesome, would rule if they spent the next couple of seasons as D partners.

Honestly, if there's some kind of streaming service I can pay for to watch NCAA hockey or just UND games, I might go for it this year. I'm currently cord cutting and my roommates and I are in the process of picking which services to subscribe to.

Batherson is going to be one of my favorite players with Stone and Karlsson. He might even challenge for the 1st spot

lol well the Aves should give him the same treatment and make sure he's on the opening night roster.

I know it’s been talked ad nauseam but even if Lazar spent 4 years in the minors, it wouldn’t have changed the outcome : he is a bottom-6 forward. His problem was more that he was hyped to be more so he didn’t meet expectations; it hurt his confidence
