Should use % of cap space allocated to a player when signed and not the nominal dollar value figure, folks.
If the ceiling goes up slightly to, say, $82m for next season, $9.5m for Point would be proportional to the $7.5m slice (11.6%) Stamkos commanded in his first post-ELC season whereas with no increase in the ceiling, $9.2m would be equivalent.
It’s very likely, obviously, Point will sign for a term that differs from the length (5 seasons) Stamkos received on his second contract but, whatever the length, Point commanding more than Kucherov got last summer (Kucherov’s $9.5m = 11.9% of a $79.5m limit, which translates to $9.9m with an $82.5m ceiling) seems very far-fetched.
