For real. We should’ve been nowhere near signing a 34 year old to fit in our top 6.

Raise your hand if you’ve ever tricked a team into doing this.

Not going to sit here and blast Hughes, because I think he will be fine down the road. But it's very evident he isn't an NHLer yet. He is a small kid getting worked by adults.

He was used to just blowing away kids with his speed and skills, but this is the NHL everyone, even 4th liners, have skill and can skate. All you needed to see was at the World's when he thought he could blow by Zadorov to the outside, Z simply escorted him to broads, then the ground and smashed him.

I thought maybe if he ended up here we could shelter him, but NJ can't, and he isn't ready for the physicality of the NHL.

Give it two years I think he'll be fine, but right now I'm not sure what NJ can do until he puts some muscle and gains some strength. It's a sucky situation at the moment, because they are trying to sell him to the fans, but it's not quite his time yet.

Fiala is going to be traded for pennies on the dollar, and will rebound elsewhere. No way he gets a fair shake there.

Hasn't he had his fair share of fair shakes already though? The Wylde used him as a scoring forward for a while (they had no one else) and he did nothing. And previously, in Nashville, he was pretty well ensconced on their 2nd line for a good long while, and really didn't do much then either. I just don't think there's a whole lot there, despite obvious talent and good underlying numbers.

How are you guys following the rest of the league? I watch like half our games and occasionally some other teams (mainly Toronto), I listen to some podcasts, and I browse HF and reddit but other than that, I really struggle to follow the league beyond the headlines and some notable highlights. I thought I'd try watching NHL Tonight but it's kinda useless, doesn't really provide much in terms of analysis or telling you which individual players are doing good/bad, it has too much fluff and it doesn't cover any advanced stats at all.

Sportsnet has Ice Surfing on Twitter which is very useful but it's only on Tuesday nights.

Play fantasy hockey. That'll get you interested in the rest of the league. At least it does for me.

Oh I'm not saying he is a fantastic player, he's 'just' a 40-50 point 2nd line level winger. He paced the low end of that basically being tied to Craig Smith's hip last year in Nashville. In 17-18 he put up 48 tied to Turris' hip. That is basically who he is as a player. When you have a solid center next to him, he will produce 2nd line numbers, even if they may end up on the low end of that spectrum. When he moves on, I expect him to go back to that level of player. With the Wild, it was too controversial of a trade for him to get a fair shake. Which I still don't fully understand the huge issues... they got a lot of team control and resetting the age compared to Granlund. The Wild would be better off rebuilding, but I think we all know the ownership is mandating them to keep competing... this was a way to get younger and keep some talent. They did regress in talent from a 1st line wing to a 2nd line, but they picked up 3 years of team control and more prime years. Not to mention that Granlund hasn't looked all that great with Nashville either (though I expect him to pick back up to 60ish points this year). Not a perfect trade by any stretch, but when your owner won't let you rebuild, you're hamstrung on what you can do.

Caufield was obviously going to be chosen by Avs at 15 if they had that pick. But they didn't.

In other news, Poolparty wears the golden helmet in the top Finnish league. Will he make a return this year?

How is this so obvious? Because he's starting he's D+1 season in an awesome fashion, it's just unfathomable that our glorious scouting staff wouldn't pick him if we had the #15 pick? I take it you have access to the Avs list, then?

Caufield set goal scoring records his draft year. I have no doubt they had him ahead of Newhook. But Newhook will be good too.

Again, why are you so sure about this? Because he set goal scoring records for the USNDTP? What is it with our scouting staff and FO's strategy and drafting tendencies that makes you so sure about it? Exactly how high did they have Caufield and Newhook on their list? If you know they would have taken Caufield, I guess you have their exact slot on our list as well? Did they try to trade up to get him?

Ok it's not obvious, I misspoke. But I'm quite confident they had it down to Newhook, Caufield and Krebs. I did think I saw Sakic asking his scouting staff "Do we like/want Krebs?" when going to select. And Caufield to me is a top 5 talent.

The scouts also mentioned they got "beat up a bit" on their lists.

Granlund might be lost in the shuffle in Nashville as well, so I'm not sure they hit the jackpot either. They do have Turris in a similar situation, so it's possible they pick Granlund over Turris to feed good ice time.

Fiala in Minnesota is so tied to the old (failed) GM that he might be gone either way. New GMs tend to purge a bit.

I’d love it if he rebounded here. That’d be even more winger depth and would give us some back-up if/when Bura starts to slide. I think he’d be damn good next to Kadri, too.

Too bad that’ll never happen since the Wild are in the division and we don’t have any useless goons on the roster for the Wild to covet.

Just watched the replay on the wild’s goal against TOR to make it 1-0.

Laughing hysterically at the wild’s announcer saying about the leafs, “they have no desire to defend in their own zone. At all.” The meltdown after they get bounced in the first round is going to be glorious.
