Silfverberg or Perron, from the potentials list. Generally you are looking for anyone rated at or above their expected slot on the team. You could also play around with the D section and compare Yandle to Goligoski to OEL.

Didn't Stempniak in AZ end badly?

Was about to ask on this. IIRC, didn't Stempniak say something to the affect of "playing in front of a half-empty arena" after he left in 2011? I mean, if it was DM trying to be too value-oriented and that was the sole reason, then I think he may be a good fit. Otherwise, I may have a hard time believing he would want to sign here.

I think a trade for someone heading into UFA in the 2017 offseason may be the best idea. Not too many for the taking, though.

While a right hand shot would be nice, I think we need to find someone who we can slot at either wing and help out on the PK. Let's face it, injuries and the like will happen, so it is just as important to have someone with multi-faceted value. Dvorak could step in at C or wing. Richardson could move to wing, if needed. Trying to think of players with that versatility. I feel as if though Winnik was like that while here, but maybe I am wrong on that.

Looks like Scevior and Stempniak would be good bets as Chayka targets if someone like Loui Eriksson is unattainable. I would think he'd be really into Jesper Fast, too. Doubt NYR are looking to deal effective value performers, though.

I worry that

Domi-Hanzal/Stepan-Duke
Reider-Strome-TheCaptain
Dvorak-Vermette-Stempniak
Martinook-Richardson-Scevior

is way, way too soft, though.

Look at KConn relative to Dahlbeck!

Yeah, KConn is the better player in every regard. The choice must be contractually or personality driven. Maybe they think they can get Dahlbeck cheap and don't really risk losing him on waivers if they want to send him down. Q heavily recommend Klas so it could be a mancrush situation on the part of Tippett.

It's pretty clear if you watch the two players and look at their numbers that KConn is just flat out better at the 3LHD spot.

Having 2 strong pairings means your 3rd can specialize more, though.

Goligoski is a 2nd PP unit kind of guy. Probably a 2nd PK unit ideally, or at least pretty close to the other LHD PK guy. OEL shouldn't be on the PK just so we can maximize his other minutes in more effective way. For that reason, it makes some sense to have a better PK option than KConn on the 3rd pair. Murphy Stone and Michalek are all fine PK options. But really only stone is a great PP option out of the three.

Having KConn-Michalek as the third pair is flipping our needs. We need a PK specialist LD and a PP specialist RD. It's possible we have the latter in DeAngelo but I wouldn't count those unhatched chickens. And while Dahlbeck got a bunch of PK mins, I don't know that he was very effective on the PK.

Top Four PK Fs on those teams:

ANA - Kesler, Cogliano, Silfverberg, Horcoff
WSH - Richards, Laich, Beagle, Winnik
STL - Backes, Steen, Ott, Brodziak (Brouwer fifth)
NYI - Cizikas, Nielsen, Kulemin, Clutterbuck
PIT - Cullen, Ferh, Dupuis, Bonino
CAR - McClement, J.Staal, Nordstrom, Malone
TBL - Boyle, Callahan, Filppula, Paquette
NJD - Zajac, Henrique, Stempniak, Gionta
BUF - Legwand, ROR, Gionta, Kane
DAL - Fiddler, Scevior, Benn, Eakin

RHS in bold

Of those, which are good fits?

This hammers home my desire to sign Backes. I'd rather give him a term deal than Hanzal, despite Hanzal being 4 years younger. The injury risk with Hanzal long-term is just too much for me.

What sort of contract gets Backes to sign AZ? Like $18M over 3, with a NMC?

Then move Hanzal for RD help.

Demers played >2m on the PP.

This is one scenario where I'd pick up Jack Johnson, if he is the 3LD and can be sheltered. He's probably the devil to JC, but he plays a lot of PK.

Z is the 7D, so I wouldn't factor him into strengths or weaknesses of the roster.
