loosing a center like ben smith is really a positive in my eyes, opens up opportunity for our young guys moving forward. PLus he was sent down for rantanen to make his debut, smith is an average forth line checking forward that had no future in colorado all the best in toronto, makes more sense for him to play there.

Yep, the only good from things from the Sens are Lindberg (maybe) and the picks.

Brown gets his spot in the top 6.
Smith is a better 4th line checker.

Toronto has too many good prospects for Lindberg to get a significant crack.

What pick(s) .. Only 1 pick as far as I know.

OTTAWA – The Ottawa Senators (@Senators) announced today that the club has acquired defenceman Dion Phaneuf, forward Matt Frattin, forward Casey Bailey, forward Ryan Rupert and defence prospect Cody Donaghey from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for defenceman Jared Cowen, forwards Colin Greening, Milan Michalek and Tobias Lindberg as well as Ottawa’s second-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft. No salary will be retained by either team over the trade’s entirety.

any chance youre able to explain this any further? not really sure what it means. colorado just gets a cheque?

Yep! That's pretty much it!

Toronto says, "Sorry for stealing your player. Here is some money in compensation."

The dollar value associated with waiver compensation depends on position and years on NHL contract.

Smith and has 6 years pro experience with an NHL contract nets Colorado $15,000.
That money is not attached to either team's cap, just money in and out.

Michalek was not the problem and Smith is certainly not the solution.
Bizarre moves.

Brown has played really well and in doing so has been much better the Michalek. That being the case, you move brown up into the Kadri line and Michalek is not suited at all for a 4th line role so he has no place in the lineup after that. The leafs want the 4th line to be dependable crashing type energy line that works the boards so someone like Smith is better suited for that.

Saves the Leafs 250k on the Cap, which isnt huge.

Not sure im a fan of this, unless it means someone like Leivo or Griffith gets in sooner.

Interesting. This might also explain why some younger waived players that people expect to get claimed don't. Adding the player's salary, using a roster spot, and paying an additional cash fee.

Yep, $4.8M in buried salary plus the Cowen Damocles sword...

Toronto has too many good prospects for Lindberg to get a significant crack.

And that pick might end up in Anaheim (Andersen trade).

Actually, it's $275K.

Interesting. Glad all those contracts expire this year and then we are out of Dion's deal. It was a necessary move to push into the rebuild and help form a new identity, same with the new logo, and all that.

Management took culture change seriously. Brown has been great, so i'm pumped to see him with top 6 minutes. He was nearly a PPG in every game he has gotten more than 4th line minutes.

jim benning....

Hmm...The guy that got us Erik Gudbranson, Brandon Sutter, Sven Baerstchi and Markus Granlund? Who drafted us Brock Boeser and Jake Virtanen? Brought in someone to mentor Jacob Markstrom in Ryan Miller?

Don't hate the player, hate the game. :naughty:

I'd like for you to listen to a little song today...
