My main concern about getting subban is what it would cost to acquire him. He is getting paid a lot, and the fact that he's available despite his talent is worrisome too. As others have said giving up young assets we're looking to build around isn't a good idea, especially for a guy who may have character issues.

Yeah, you wouldn't want to lock up your excellent d-men and build around them like Chicago....

Having two good pairings lets you bury your third pairing on the bench.

It is fair to ask about the budget, but I'd take my chances.

OEL and Subban pairing in three years will make much more than Keith and Seabrook. The Coyotes are also not a cap spending team and won't be for the foreseeable future.

I don't disagree on the value of two top dmen but that cost is just so high.

My take is to not sign a PP specialist for the D and look for either a Defensive D-man or a two-way D-man to pair with Stone <snip>

Grossmann and Dahlbeck have been the primary LD PK, options IIRC both avg > 2.5min PKTOIG

A good UFA option that can provide 19-20EV/gp mins & 2+ PK/gp mins would be Kris Russell. All-arounder extraordinaire. Now, does he cut enough into OEL's PP TOI for OEL to PK more? That's a tough call. It would have to be a combo of both Russell and KConn stepping up for that. <snip>
Belated cheers for the responses on the defence.

What's the story with Kris Russell? I only really know him as a guy who gets dumped on by a section of the analytics crowd, yet his mobility's always praised. Non-existant stick work? Prefers using his body to take pucks away?

I agree that our balance on D could look weird if we managed to sign an OFD for the left like Yandle, should KConn win that 3rd spot. Though I'd much rather hand a big UFA contract to an offensive wizard D - feels like less chance of that contract becoming an anchor. Completely agree with everything said about reserving big UFA contracts for characters you know inside out. I have my fingers crossed for a Yandle return.

Failing that, any interest in chucking a boatload of money Brian Campbell's way for a couple of seasons? Like Jagr, I imagine Florida will end up paying him what he wants, but I'd love to be able to sign both to keep Doan company at the bingo table next year.

I agree. Doesn't have to be that way, but sadly it is.

Isn't Subban's supposed availability meant to be linked to a split dressing room with Pacioretty over leadership? Sounds like something that resolves itself when Price returns and they start winning again.

Having a personality that large could be great for the market, can't see the cost being anything other than prohibitive though. Plus I want more stupid Yandle & Murphy youtube videos more.

Well PK is a righty, just get him and yandle, what a top 3. Of course we'd have like almost half the cap tied up into dmen, but eh.

I think I'd trade for Pacioretty before Subban in trade talks if the above is the case. Pacioretty is 27 and signed through the 2018-2019 at 4.5 per season with no clauses.

Subban is signed through 2021-2022 at 9 million per with a NMC kicking in next season. So there are three strikes against him for me:
1. 9 million per
2. Length of contract
3. NMC for the entirety of his contract
Does anyone know when the next season begins (as it relates to contracts). Since Subban's NMC kicks in in 2016-2017, I'm guessing this means that he'd have to be moved by the end of June?

Yes, well, consistency would be wonderful in a 6M goalie. Everyone knows he's hot-cold.

Mike Smith's 10 games, post injury:

.944 SV% and 1.81 GAA

Still crossing my fingers that his injury has hampered him for a few seasons now and is fine now, but I doubt it, and he's still had many slow to get up and extensive stretching moments.

So which UFA do we try to keep?

Shane Doan RW 39 $5,300,000 UFA
Alex Tanguay RW 36 $3,500,000 UFA
Boyd Gordon C 32 $3,000,000 UFA
Nicklas Grossman D 31 $3,000,000 UFA
Steve Downie RW 29 $1,750,000 UFA
Viktor Tikhonov LW 27 $1,040,000 UFA
Anders Lindback G 27 $875,000 UFA
Kyle Chipchura C 30 $875,000 UFA
Derek Smith D 31 $650,000 UFA
Alex Grant D 27 $600,000 UFA
Dylan Reese D 31 $600,000 UFA
Eric Selleck LW 28 $575,000 UFA

I say certainly Doan. Try to get Tanguay and Gordon cheap. Would like to see Chip stay but doubt it will happen. Downie and Tik can go. Jury out on Grossman.
Dean's value and experience to this team is priceless. Tanguay proved his worth and although Gordo didn't put points up his PK ability was shown tonight when the only PP the sharks scored on was when he was in penalty box.

If Doan wants to continue, sign him.

Other than that, I'm fine with letting the rest go. Tanguay might be okay to sign if Doan ends up retiring (or he signs cheap and short term),

The only scenario I'd be okay with keeping Gordon is if they intend for him to essentially fill Chip's role next season as the fill in guy. Gordon's play has decline a bit and isn't so elite defensively anymore that he can hold down a regular C spot on a good team.

Ollie all the way on that question. Regardless of his stature as a top defenseman around the league, the defense would be downgraded from tire fire to immolated oil spill without him.

Datsyuk leaving the NHL seems all but done now. Leaves Detroit with $7.5 million in dead cap space.

Might be worth "helping" Detroit in exchange for an asset -- maybe a draft pick upgrade or a young player like Teemu Pulkinnen.

3 options:

Mild Cap Relief
Datsyuk + asset for Pronger. About $2.5M in cap savings for Detroit.

Medium Cap Relief
Datsyuk + asset for Michalek. Sends some money back and clears a D spot. $4.3M in cap savings for Detroit.

Max Cap Relief
Datsyuk + asset for lesser asset. A straight $7.5M coming off the books. Most projections here have us 10-12 million below next year's anticipated cap, and that includes a big contract for Yandle. So, 12-18 million not including Yandle.

I will gladly take their first with Datsyuk for a mid to late round pick and some prospect that nobody has really heard of.

As long as we're not paying actual cash for this, I'm down for whatever. Keep stacking assets. I would probably buy a Datsyuk Coyotes jersey for the lulz, too. Only thing I don't like about Mosby's list is Michalek: we've already traded him twice, right? Doing it a third time -- just 1 year after he re-signed here as UFA -- seems like it would be poor form. Z's a warrior who I want to skate with Oliver / rub off on the rest of our defensemen. He's not a dump.

I agree. Other then Doan, and maybe Tanguay, the rest is roster filler, who cares, keep a few, let a few go, based on need.

So which UFA do we try to keep?

Shane Doan RW 39 $5,300,000 UFA -> re-sign (last to sign)
Alex Tanguay RW 36 $3,500,000 UFA->replace with Dvorak
Boyd Gordon C 32 $3,000,000 UFA->replace with Gaudet
Nicklas Grossman D 31 $3,000,000 UFA->expecting the 'Yotes to sign Jared Cowen after the Leafs buy him out
Steve Downie RW 29 $1,750,000 UFA->just needs to be gone
Viktor Tikhonov LW 27 $1,040,000 UFA->replace by Samuelson
Anders Lindback G 27 $875,000 UFA->
Kyle Chipchura C 30 $875,000 UFA->replace by Strome
Derek Smith D 31 $650,000 UFA
Alex Grant D 27 $600,000 UFA
Dylan Reese D 31 $600,000 UFA
Eric Selleck LW 28 $575,000 UFA

also expecting Tinordi to be released after the Coyotes sign Cowen
Doan's re-signing could be interesting, he may end up with an incentive-laden contract if management throws money at acquisitions (free agents/trades), as I expect GMDM to (try to) improve the blue line

Feel fine about Doan, Gordon or Tanguay for 1 year at $2m. Not all three though.

Grossmann, Downie, Tikhonov and Lindback are gone.

I'd be fine keeping any of the AHL defensemen on two-day deals; Wood, Hache, Mermis and Mayo on the AHL roster next season is ... underwhelming. Need some veterans with that group.

Hanzel, Vermette and Richardson all under contract next season. Leaves one center spot open for Strome. So unfortunately I think Gordo goes. Love his work ethic!
