So with respect to the McDavid - Nurse battle to come, which of the following scenarios would you prefer as an Oiler fan, assuming for a moment that Edmonton wins the lottery tomorrow?

1. Nurse steps up, plays 35 mins a night and shuts down McDavid. McDavid ends up with 0 pts, -6 in a 4 game sweep for SSM and Nurse shows that he's the best defenseman in the OHL.

2. McDavid shows he can't be stopped by Nurse and goes on to re-set Erie's points/series mark with, I dunno, 10g, 8a in a 4 game sweep for Erie. The other SSM defensemen do marginally better and Nurse ends his OHL career on a very low point.

I personally would probably rather McDavid get shut down. It'd make me feel better about team balance and even Crosby has a bad series once in a while (well in his case, for the last 4 series...)

McDavid v. Nurse should be a solid matchup.

But I'd expect SSM as a whole to make short work of this Erie team. The Hounds are just too deep of a team. Erie essentially is a two line team with extremely weak goaltending.

And in response to not signing Marco Roy, I'd have to agree at this point. It sucks pulling the plug on a second rounder (and the return for Cogs) so early, but he hasn't shown that he can stay healthy, nor has he taken any big steps in his development at this point. And the fact that he's a '94 and isn't tearing it up in the Q is a massive red flag. There are other players out there who are more deserving of a contract.

And he might be able to put it all together at some point and another team may reap the benefits somewhere down the line, but the Oilers shouldn't be wasting their valuable roster spots on maybes at this point.

Platzer with the primary - and only - assist on Miller's goal, now 2-1-3 in 3 AHL games. Already almost at half of Moroz's whole season. Kid's a player.

I disagree completely on this. Roy didn't have a great season but he just tore Charlottetown a new hole in that series. We have the contract spots to keep him.

Hamilton is the guy we should be cutting loose, IMO. Or Ewanyk.

Well, Moroz is also god awful, so it's an unfair comparison. Platzer seems like a great pick. The guy is a point magnet.

Colorado cut loose Joseph Blandisi this summer.

A guy who posted 31p in 68g as a 17 year old, 51p in 63g as an 18 year old and 50p in 47g as a 19 year old. A guy who scored at a similar rate to Marco and also had some issues staying in the lineup leading up to this season.

The difference?

In Blandisi's overage year he scored more goals than Marco had points in his. I know they're different leagues, but that's a sobering statistic. And when Roy's game has little to no likelihood of offering him a checking line spot in the NHL in the future, you'd question why you're wasting the resources on him at this point.

Am I the only one who actually liked Hamilton's game while he was up here? Now I know it was a short sample size, but he definitely showed a willingness to throw his body around. As a call up for the bottom 6 he's a decent option, I'd definitely give him a qualifying offer again this summer.

Meh... Those types of guys are a dime a dozen. He hasn't even played well in the AHL, never mind the NHL.

Yep those guys shake loose all the time. Only reason I see to resign him is to build a team culture and show you're loyal to your players. I think that's underrated. I'd sign him to an AHL only deal and reevaluate in a year.
On Marco Roy I think they should sign him based on what we've seen in TC. And I think they will. If Ewanyk, Kessy and Moroz got contracts I don't see how Roy won't. He was a 2nd rounder as well, there's pride involved as well. We do have contract spots and you can always add a prospect or two in a trade if you need the space.

Hamilton is 23. At the same age Matt Hendricks was playing in the ECHL. Moroz is 20 and has played less than one full year in the AHL while dealing with nagging injuries. It amazes me that people talk about the need for someone like Nurse or Draisaitl to play in the AHL even if they are ready, but with the prospects that actually may need the time to develop there is no patience.

The second you let pride cloud your judgement, you start making bad decision. That's been the M.O. for this team for years... So with that in mind, yes Roy will be re-signed...

Plus where/how does Roy project to be an NHL'er? His offence isn't good enough to be a scorer, his defence isn't good enough defencive specialist, and he's not a 4th line banger. Kessy, Ewanyk, and Moroz can at least try and hold a claim to the last one.

His max realistic upside is someone like Tom Pratt at the NHL, but even he tracked better than Marco coming out of junior.

I don't have high hopes for Roy but I think a possible upside is a guy like Markus Kruger. It is however very very unlikely. Kruger was a smart playmaker in junior who to stick in the NHL used his smarts to play D and transition the puck. I agree on the pride.
I don't see the point in drafting 4th line bangers. They can always be traded for, signed or picked off waivers. Thus I think Hamilton, Kessy, Ewanyk and Moroz are utterly pointless unless they show more upside than the 4th line. Roy at least comes with some vision and hockey sense.

According to gazeta.ru, Oilers are interested in bringing Slepyshev to NA and Ufa wants to keep him in Russia. His KHL team Salavat Yulaev has made a two-year qualifying offer but they haven't heard anything from Slepyshev. His KHL contract ends April 30th.

http://sport.business-gazeta.ru/article/122733/

On a related note, Slepyshev just scored a goal against Finland.

When it comes to prospects some take longer than others. Khairi didn't have any better if a year then Moroz but people can't get past he was drafted early and hold that against him when wanting to cut him loose.

Agreed.

You can pluck a guy like Moroz or Kessy off waviers and save yourself 3 years of development. Hell, that's what we did with Gazdic.

Guys like Khaira, Hamilton, and Pitlick I don't mind, as they're at least decent defencively and can skate/think the game well enough to catch their checks at the pro level. But even then, you can just go out and find someone like Petrell or Pakarinen who does the same job or better.

This the reason why I think having a "deep" prospect pool is highly overrated. You can always go out and easily find a guy (on waviers, ect) who's better than 80% of your prospect pool and what they could hope to be.

I think you are really underestimating both Moroz and Kessy. These guys are not plugs who can do nothing but fight. Moroz was a key player in the Oil Kings Memorial Cup run. Kessy was actually playing quite well in OKC when he got hurt.

Exactly. Check out Hamilton's first couple of AHL years. He is a big body that does not use it and not gifted offensively either. In two years time Moroz will be on a different level than Hamilton.

I'll dig into this a bit when I've got some time but I'm pretty sure we have contracts spots available to keep both Roy and Hamilton assuming we let Kellen Lain walk.

Wow what a poorly thought out post IMO.

First off Gazdic is in the league for one thing and one thing only. He would mop up the floor with Moroz or Kessy FWIW but they are MUCH more skilled and better skaters, play better defense, have more skill, etc.

Secondly I'm not sure why you're so high on Khaira who has all of 10 points in 51 games while dumping on Moroz who has had a number of injuries the last 2 seasons so that he had to spend most of those offseasons rehabbing instead of doing normal training. Yes Moroz has had a rough rookie season, I doubt that he'd tell anyone otherwise. However the key with him is to get him into this offseason healthy for the first time in 3 years so that he can really put in the work to work on his explosiveness and speed. IMO he was a better skater than Kessy was prior to this season and Kessy improved by leaps and bounds to the point of being a NHL caliber skater. If Moroz can have a similar improvement he will be a completely different player next season and may well earn a call-up or two. The kid has good hands around the net, he may take some time but he's worth the wait.

Agreed, it's time to offer Hamilton an AHL only deal, if he doesn't take it he can walk. Moroz is much better than he has shown this season. I hope that he puts in the work this offseason to raise his game significantly next season.

I dont think offering a player a contract with no possibilty of playing in the NHL is a good way of rewarding the steps forward they've taken in the previous season.

If you're going to **** with the player, just cut ties and not bother pissing them off.

In terms of contract spots, Hamilton is more of what the Oilers should be looking to keep within the organization, hoping that they may take another step forward in the coming season(s).

I'll admit I really haven't seen a lot of either of Hamilton or Roy, but Roy is a depth player in the QMJHL as a 20 year old. Hamilton is a checking foward as a pro and is just starting to turn a corner.

Which one do the Oilers need more?
